Polished red agate beads mix with freshwater cultured pearls in this distinctive two-strand necklace. The 10 mm translucent agate beads are a deep orange-red when viewed in the light and appear brown-red against the skin. They have a smooth, polished finish and their rich hue contrasts beautifully with the soft pastel shades of the matching freshwater pearls. A versatile accent for day or night, this necklace measures 16.5 inches and fastens in back with a decorative engraved sterling silver box clasp.
Patented in 1936, this set of two jewel trays was made by Vitro Agate Company. The larger "master tray" has turquoise marbles, while the smaller tray, which is pictured resting inside the master tray, is circled in black marbles. The smaller tray also has the stamped seal from the 1939 New York World's Fair.
Some of the samples I have been photographing are nothing short of amazing in so many ways. I have added a couple more Pietersite pictures and a new one, Rose Plume Agate photos. To contemplate how nature formed something so absolutely fascinating to look at, the fact that these patterns [...]
Now this is cool!
I managed to finish shooting a bit early the other day, and while I was out, I started to imagine what I could get within those rocks that I had on hand by reversing my old Nikkor 50mm lens and attaching it to the Canon 100mm macro lens.
I was amazed!
This first image [...]

AGATE: a background & history
Agate is by far one of the nature's most creative gemstone creations. It is formed by filling the cavities of host rocks, creating beautiful colored bands that resemble the rings of a tree trunk. I am constantly amazed at the different varieties of agate, and their colors are always sparking new inspirations in the studio.
In ancient times, agate was valued as a
I was jolted out of my sugar hangover this morning when I read about the Agate Pass bridge closure scheduled for March 4th through the 29th. To repair damage done by a crane on a truck in April 2006, the bridge will be totally closed from 10pm to 4am for most of March. Although usually at that time of night I am polishing, soldering and generally refurbishing my 1885 brass oil lamps (oh, sorry, that’s my spouse–I’m watching Gilmore Girls reruns), I am sure this closure will serve as an incredible inconvenience to people both on and off the island.
What do you do if you are trying to come home from the late shift? Here are a few ideas (feel free to add to these):
1. Clearwater casino–seems obvious but had to say it; a few martinis, a couple rounds of 21, you’ll forget all about your home, which is good since you may not own it anymore by the time you are done.
2. Go the other way, silly! Drive to Tacoma and back up and take the Seattle ferry (it is
