My Health - If you are dust-sensitive, especially if you have allergies and/or asthma, you can reduce some of your misery by creating a "dust-free" bedroom. Dust may contain molds, fibers, and dander from dogs, cats, and other animals, as well as tiny dust mites. These mites, which live in bedding, upholstered furniture, and carpets, thrive in the summer and die in the winter. They will, however, continue to thrive in the winter if the house is warm and humid. The particles seen floating in a shaft of sunlight include dead mites and their waste products. The waste products actually provoke the allergic reaction. The routine cleaning necessary to maintain a dust-free bedroom also can help reduce exposure to cockroaches, another important cause of asthma in some allergic people. You probably c

13-year-old Laura Weaver has a rare skin condition which makes her allergic to almost everything. Doctors believe that her hyper-sensitivity is due to a breakdown of her immune system.Laura's skin flares up after being triggered by any one of a dozen allergies. A whiff of perfume, the smell of an air freshener or just brushing past someone's clothes can leave her doubled over in pain. She is allergic to all dairy products, some fruit and wheat, all soaps, sprays and perfumes and even reacts to non-cotton clothing and some plastic furniture. A peanut would send her into lethal anaphylactic shock, and even central heating gives her a high temperature, breathing problems and causes her skin to come up in vivid red rashes. Link

Children with skin allergies may be allergic to the oat proteins commonly found in skin care products. Of about 300 children with eczema seen at a pediatric dermatology unit in France, nearly a third had a skin reaction to oats.
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin disorder that causes scaly and itchy rashes.
None of the parents had suspected an oat allergy in their child, and previous clinical examinations had not identified the allergies. Twenty-eight percent of children who were tested for the allergy by the application of oat cream to the skin developed eczema or other skin eruptions on the tested area.
75 percent of the children had been previously treated with oat-containing emollients.Sources:Reuters November 14, 2007

A boy of 12 suffers from so many allergies that he is able to eat only five foods.
Tyler Savage is violently ill every time he is given dishes containing dairy products or wheat, gluten, eggs, lactose and soya.
The sole foods he is allowed are chicken, carrots, grapes, potatoes and apples.
To help him survive, minerals and vitamins are pumped directly into his stomach through a tube.
Tyler started to fall ill at the age of six when even a morsel of food would leave him writhing in agony from sickness and diarrhoea.
His mother, Lynne Savage, 43, said: “We asked for help but kept being told that he was suffering from a stomach infection. As a result his weight dropped drastically.
“He ran out of energy really quickly and couldn’t do the things other children were doing. He just seemed to be getting worse and worse.

Before you give a highly scented candle as a gift, you should first inquire about how this person feels about candles that are heavily scented. Depending on the scent you use, it may not matter whether or not the candle is highly scented. This is because some scents, such as vanilla and lavender, are mild and it doesn’t matter how much of the oil is used to make a highly scented candle. Other stronger scents may be harder to take in high doses, which is why you do need to be careful about giving a highly scented candle to someone that is sensitive to scents. Some of the scents used in making a highly scented candle do not smell like flowers or earthy aromas. Try a heavily scented candle with the aroma of angel food cake. This particular scent has undertones of cherry to produce a great aroma in your kitchen. Since the scent of home baked goodies rarely bothers anyone, this is one type of heavily scented candle that you can use freely. Get a hint of Grandma’s kitchen with candles sce
I had an allergy test a few years back. I am allergic to several things- dogs, cats, mold and hay to name a few. It doesn't really affect my life very much. Nobody wants to be around mold. I just can't really take my kid to a farm park (or can't stay long). I'm not particularly fond of animals anyway. I just have to remember not to pet a friend's dog too much. This is also not much of an issue since I'm not too into dogs. The smarter ones realize it rather quickly. They size me up and we have an understanding. The dumber ones figure it out eventually when I am unresponsive to them. It's not an actual allergy which often affects me this time of year; it's a sensitivity. I am very sensitive to the heat. It's horrible. I get sick very easily. First it starts with the chills, then there is a dizziness which comes and goes. If I don't heed the warnings, I could pass out. Once again, it really isn't too often an issue, because I don't particularly like being out in the heat anyway
A few weeks ago I got a pillow cover in the mail from Achoo Allergy, along with information about the products they sell for people with allergies. Their catalog includes bedding, air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and more. The pillow cover they sent me is made of fabric with very small pores that keep dust mites and dander from getting through.
Unfortunately I’m allergic to cat & dog dander so I thought I’d sleep on it for a while…literally…before I wrote anything about the pillow covers. Like I said, I’ve been using it for a few weeks and I have seen a difference. Since my cat and one of my dogs usually sleep on my bed, there’s no way to block out all the allergens, but the cover certainly seems to cut down on some of them. I haven’t been as congested as usual, and as an added bonus, since I use feather pillows, I haven’t had any feathers poking through the fabric. I may just have to get a couple more.Technorati Tags: pets, cats,
Heartburn is the cardinal symptom of acid reflux . This may result in damage to the esophagus causing difficulty swallowing. However, so can allergic esophagus also known as eosinophilic esophagitis. Recent studies confirm both may be present though allergic esophagus may be missed. This is because of the unawareness of this fact by some gastroenterologists and the common practice to presume acid reflux is the cause. If acid reflux is presumed and the visual and historical clues of acid reflux missed then a biopsy of the esophagus that confirms the characteristic finding microscopically of an abnormal number of the allergy cell, eosinophil, in the esophagus may not be done by the doctor. As a result the role of food allergy in the patient’s symptoms will be not be appreciated. Adding to the confusion is the knowledge of many pathologists and endoscopy doctors that eosinophils are commonly present in the lower esophagus when acid reflux injury has occurred. However, typically the
Eosinophilic esophagitis may be a manifestation of celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Bua et al. from Italy report three patients aged 7, 17 and 19 years old, who were discovered to have eosinophilic esophagitis during evaluation for celiac disease. Biopsies of the lower esophagus obtained at the time of endoscopy performed to obtain duodenal biopsies to confirm celiac disease revealed eosinophilic esophagitis. All three had positive specific antibodies and small bowel biopsies diagnostic for celiac disease. However, they also had eosinophils greater than 20 per high power field found on esophageal biopsies though they were not symptomatic for eosinophilic esophagitis. I have also found eosinophilic esophagitis in patients with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Like Bua, I believe there is a link to gluten and eosinophilic esophagitis. Two of the three patients in the Italian report failed to resolved their eosinophilic esophagitis on follow up biopsies. However,
Yep, it’s true. And yep, I have had my Chloe for 11 years and love her tons.

The Never-Ending Quest:Lessons Learned from Urban School ReformAs H. L. Menchan understood, "There is always an easy solution to every human problem—neat, plausible, and wrong.Larry Cuban's sober commentary in Education Week outlines the the "dismal history of school reform policy" and discounts those snake oil peddlers who try to reduce the complex problems of school reform to simple sounding solutions. Cuban argues that we "need to think smarter about the steady rollout of school reforms."Let's review.Four reform strategies have dominated national policy agendas over the past 25 years.Whole-school reform began in the early 1980s, with the “effective schools” movement’s focus on transforming one school at a time by working on school climate, curriculum, instruction, and testing. Since the early 1990s, vouchers, charter schools, magnets, and theme schools have breathed life into the theory that having a choice of schools motivates parents and engages students.Standards-based
GERD causes symptoms of heartburn and food sticking but so can an allergic condition of the esophagus known as eosinophilic esophagitis (EE). EE is characterized by the presence of an abnormal number of allergic type cells called eosinophils in the esophagus. In many patients and the number of eosinophils may not be high enough to separate EE from GERD, however a new study found another allergy cell, the mast cell, may help differentiate allergic esophagitis from acid reflux esophagitis. This study also provides further support that some people have both acid reflux and allergy. Eosinophils are not normally present in the esophagus but are seen in small numbers under the microscope in biopsies of esophagus due to acid reflux. A count of more than 15-20 eosinophils per high power field (HPF or 40x) is the usual range considered diagnostic of EE though some pathologists use 24 or more. In reflux, up to 7 eosinophils per HPF is considered typical. This study found significantly higher e
Eosinophilic esophagitis EE), also known as allergic esophagitis, may be misdiagnosed as acid reflux in adults and children. Symptoms include choking spells or swallowing difficulties, chest or upper abdominal pain, heartburn not relieved by acid blocker medications, and bouts of vomiting refusal to eat. It is caused allergy blood cells called eosinophils that are not normally present in the esophagus with the exception of relatively few numbers in the lower esophagus in the setting of acid reflux invading the lining of the esophagus or feeding tube, often as a result of food and/or inhaled pollen allergies.Eosinophils invade the lining of the gut in response to allergic reactions to foods or medications and parasite infections. Once present in the lining they release chemicals in response to foods or other stimuli that can cause swelling, constriction, bleeding, perforation, itching, pain, or scarring of the affected gut. EE was first described in children but is now being recognized
Apparently, if an 8 year child demands nothing but greasy junk food, then that's what you should give them. Every 20 minutes, if that's what they demand. If they refuse to eat vegetables and fruit, then you give them a sausage sandwich instead, or perhaps a curry, a Big Mac and some crisps.
