I absolutely LOVE old-fashioned dresses and aprons. In fact, given the chance I would gladly have grown up in the Laura Ingalls Wilder days when life was simple and hard work was a normal part of everyday life. I occassionally peruse Ebay for the kind of apron I have in my mind, but haven't ever had any luck. So, you can imagine my delight when I happened upon Sense & Sensiblity Patterns th
A neat idea that you can cherish for years to come. This video shows you a great starting point to make your own Thanksgiving apron.
The children's hand prints is a wonderful idea, then your kids can use there imaginations to add other objects to the apron. Just make sure you get the date on there so down the road, when you look back you know what year it was created.

I participated in the recent edition of the Flirty Apron Swap. Gordon Ramsay on his eight-year-old son Jack:
“Yesterday he came running in and said, 'Dad, what's a wanker?',” said Ramsay.
“I explained to him it meant like being a bit of an idiot and he replied, 'Oh, you mean like a knob?' So I had to sit him down and found out that this was coming from the 16-year-olds on the bus who'd decided to teach Jack Ramsay a different swear word every day.”

I have often wondered what it is about a woman in an apron that turns a man on. Perhaps it's the fact that we appear to be domestic goddesses ready to cater to their every need? [Insert 'Oedipus complex' here] Or perhaps it's that we're seconds away from working up a sweat, hell bent on stinking up the place. Ladies, believe it or not, it is probably none of the above. The "French Maid" style o
Yes, it's no secret; I'm up to my elbows in things to do. The good news is that I am slowly but surely making my way down the list. I found a source of inspiration for my household duties at The Hillbilly Housewife. I don't actually consider myself a hillbilly, or even a housewife really, but her Apron testimonial really hit home for me. In short, it was on "one of those days" that her o

Lani received a very special package in the mail from Autumn, Michael's cousins wife. She is a sweet and very talented sewer. I saw that she was going to open and etsy shop with the adorable apron that Lani has now.Go ahead and check it out. I'll wait.... Aren't they adorable! What a perfect Christmas gift with some art supplies or some cookie cutters:) Here is a link to her son wearing a boy one!She offered to send me one as a gift. I LOVE it. The fabric is beautiful and it is well crafted. As a beginner sewer, I am in awe of her straight stiches:) I would URGE all of you to head over to her shop and order one for your kiddos. She has one up there now, but I know that she is willing to make custom orders. There is also a few hand made "infant wrap tops" and a wallet. Autumn and Ben did just have a baby girl last week so I am sure she is pretty busy with her new addition.Lani loves the button that Autumn uses. Here is the whole apron. The fabric is very durable and will stand up to
Although I've done an incredible amount of cooking and baking over the past 20 years I'll admit something... I never wore an apron until just over three years ago. I didn't own one, no one had ever given me one and frankly, I just never thought about it.
Almost four years ago I made my first apron and I was hooked. Now I have 4 of them in my kitchen drawer and I have a child sized as well. I

Hi sewing friends,
I finished the Space apron and the gift was ready for Friday as initially planned. Here is the picture of the apron:
The apron is based on McCalls 2233 but graded to a smaller size. If you are interested in reading about how I graded the apron please click here.
Here is a picture with some cutouts that were fun to sew as decorations (note the globe under the large pocket, the boy and girl on the strap and Saturn under the two D-shape loops):
The Space apron wraps up the series of gifts that I was sewing lately. I’m done sewing aprons for a while and I’m off to sewing knits and playing with the serger. My next project will be a swimsuit. I was originally inspired by the June/July 2007 Threads issue on swimsuits and after reading Dawn’s posting on serging I got myself the book “Sewing with Knits” by Connie Long and I believe I’m ready to go.
On a more personal note, I would like to share with you that I left my corporate job on

Hi sewing friends,
I’m working on two new simple projects; the Space apron and the Cool Katz pillowcase. These are going to be a gift for two wonderful daycare teachers that have been part of our DD daily life for the last two and a half years. I have to finish both by next Friday when DD has her last day at daycare. She will graduate from there
I’m making the Space apron in size small and I’m planning to use the following material:
Space notion cotton fabric; 21″ (50cm) long 42″ (108cm) wide
Solid green cotton; 31″ (75cm) long 42″ (108cm) wide
Thread
2 metal D-rings
I’m using the same pattern as for the Teacher’s Apron, which is McCalls 2233, that I graded to size small. You can see that I’ve shortened the apron for 2 inches and took in 1 inch on the side seam. I also raised the underarm curve and pockets accordingly. The neck strap is 1 inch shorter and the ties are longer; from the original 5cm wide and 75cm long to

Hello sewing friends,
Yesterday was the last day of school for us and my DD gave her teacher this apron as a token of appreciation for the great year she had at school. DD finished grade 2 and she had a truly amazing teacher.
I used McCalls 2233 to make this medium size apron using the following material:
40″ (1 m) of solid red cotton
20″ (0.5 m) of a novelty “school print” cotton
thread
2 metal D-rings (for the strap)
My alterations to the original pattern were:
lined pockets instead of single layer pockets (this is mainly due to the fact that my novelty fabric had a lighter weave)
left upper pencil pocket (this detail seemed suited for a teacher, and besides, it is…
practical)
few appliqués (I sewn few cut-outs from the novelty fabric using a decorative stitch on my SM)
longer ties (this is so that one can wrap the tie around the body and tie a bow at the front)
interfaced novelty fabric ties (again due to the fact that the novelty fabric wa

I know, from reading some of your comments, how much you all are really getting into the "apron thing" and how some of the vintage styles really hold a special nostalgia for you of times spent with your Mom watching her cook, or times spent with your Grandmother. Aprons are by nature, I really think, a tie with our pasts. If they weren't why would there even be such figures of speech as, "cut the apron strings..." a phrase that is pregnant with meaning and fraught with all sorts of emotions, whether good or bad.No one has captured the history of the apron, I think, as well as EllynAnne Geisel, owner of Apron Memories. EllynAnne has taken what to many is just an article of clothing to be thrown on the minute before cooking something particularly splattery and has unwrapped for us the history and the rich emotional significance that a simple piece of womanly attire can elicit. Not only has EllynAnne published book, called The Apron Book on the topic of aprons, she has won an Independ
I am getting so excited about this and more and more jealous of whoever my lucky winners are. The only solution to this jealousy I'm sure will be to buy myself a few new aprons... This dress ($320 USD) is positively beautiful and is begging to be worn on a care free Spring afternoon or in the dead of Summer. We say pair it with the multitude of peep toe flats that are around and get out there for a lovely day with friends or your sweetheart.
Unfortunatley, some of us women weren’t born to cook, but at least we can pretend and look stylish all the while with this Wild Orchid apron ($39.95 USD) designed by Domistyle. Whether you are a seasoned chef or a culinary virgin, this is the apron for you.
I don't wear aprons, but if I did, it would HAVE to be this one. The flirty little skirt, that gorgeous fabric...who knows, I might just start wearing only aprons ;-) This is my pick of the day and you can find it here.
The newest Starbucks Black Apron edition coffee, Ethiopia Gemadro Estate, is touted as being sustainable and preserving habitat. Digging a bit into the background reveals this coffee is grown by a huge multinational conglomerate that is replacing endangered wild coffee with nursery-grown plants and expanding into land that Starbucks describes as primary forest. O.k., today I found these hip little aprons from a designer in the Boston area. http://www.sweetpeahandcrafts.com/ I'm all about hip aprons and who can tell me that they honestly wouldn't use one if they had it. Cool little pocket to carry stuff around (M&M's come to mind). They have lots of designs, very affordable and such a unique holiday gift to boot!
This may sound weird, but due to the lack of memory brain cells, I get very frustrated when sewing. When I am on one side of my sewing table, perhaps holding something in place, then and only then do I realize I need my pins, or my scissors. Then I have to set down what I am doing and find the things I need for that step. It is the same story for my little scissors, scotch tape, measuring tape. In short, you name it and I have left it somewhere else when I need it.
To that end, I have considered designing a sewing apron or perhaps a vest that would have pockets and perhaps even special places for the things I need while sewing. A loop for the big sicssors, and smaller loop for the tiny ones. A pocket for my tape measure...you get the idea. Other things I think about wo

I've looked at about 50 websites and the big 4 pattern books, but to no avail. Thanks!! ... arline
