      Biblical Literacy
The Bible (literally The Book) has had one of the longest and most successful publishing runs in history. It has sold millions (billions?) of copies worldwide. While many of these copies occupy the shelves of believers, atheists and agnostics frequently quote the Bible's contents in times of distress, or in times of joy. It remains one of the most respected, but least read, and even less frequentl

Only certain stories are shared with children and several others are sensored. I have heard it said that it is to protect their innocence. That is a subject all on its own. God was very real to me through college. During college I went to church every Sunday with my grandmother.I quit reading the Bible when I got to the end of 2 Samuel and it tells the story of God killing 70,000 Israelites via an epidemic because David took a census that God told him to take. I just couldn't accept that story. I had a pretty liberal view of the Bible, but this story couldn't be true. My God wouldn't do that. The God I prayed to, talked to wouldn't do that...couldn't do that. The crisis of faith was never quite settled, but the feelings that story gave me eventually died down. After college I still went to church in Columbia,

As for now, I’ll just write a few comments on the subject. For one, I’m always a little bit alarmed at how viciously “bible-believing Christians” attack the Church for this part of its history. Are not the very covenant people descended from Father Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? They were righteous above those of the earth to the point that the Lord kept his promises made to them and established them as his people.Polygamy was not part of the Mosaic Law and hence was not abolished when Christ fulfilled the Law. Jerusalem: Archaeologists Discover Ancient Biblical Wall
I love this sort of thing. Historical proof. What wonderful news to hear during the Christmas season. Israeli says elusive biblical wall found JERUSALEM - A wall mentioned in the Bible’s Book of Nehemiah and long sought by archaeologists apparently has been found, an Israeli archaeologist says. A team of archaeologists discovered the wall in Jerusalem’s ancient City of David during a rescue attempt on a tower that was in danger of collapse, said Eilat Mazar, head of the Institute of Archaeology at the Shalem Center, a Jerusalem-based research and educational institute, and leader of the dig. Artifacts including pottery shards and arrowheads found under the tower suggested that both the tower and the nearby wall are from the 5th century B.C., the time of Nehemiah, Mazar said this week. Scholars previously thought the wall dated to the Hasmonean period from about 142 B.C. to 37 B.C. The findings suggest that the structure was actually part of the same city wall the Bible says

      On a Biblical Promise
One of the lies told about the talks at Camp-David (2000), is that a major reason for their failure is the Palestinians reluctance to accept the significance of the Temple Mount for Jews. At some point, Arafat denied that there ever was a Jewish Temple on Temple Mount, claiming that this was simply a lie the Jews invented for political reasons against the Palestinians.[1] Such ludicrous claims have unfortunately been taken at face-value, rather than interpreted only on the political level of their implications. To me, the readily approval of these claims, reflect nothing more than an colonial-orientalist or even racist view of the Palestinians. There is no other way to explain how someone would believe that Arafat truly has no knowledge of history. Arafat's claims do not prove his ignorance, but only the fact that he was willing to say anything that would bring the peace-process to a stop.Putting the political implications aside for a moment, what is the significance of Jewish history

They don’t want to hear about judgment or sin, they just want to justify themselves and seek their own course through life. They ignore hell entirely and expect heaven completely. They live their lives accountable to no one, and expect God to turn a blind eye. Rather than having their names written in the Book of Life, they want to make their mark in the world, expecting to be rewarded for their renown. In other words, it’s not what Jesus has said that is important, it’s what they believe that He has said is important. When I first started writing these devotions more than three years ago, I set out to help our church elders and staff find time to read the Bible and reflect upon God’s Word. I realized that we were all busy and under a great deal of pressure in our lives, so setting aside a few moments in the day to be at one

A Biblical Interpretation of the Fall of Islam
This is not an endorsement. Merely sharing a sharing of information The Fall of Islam First of all, we need to learn what some of the figurative words in Revelation, like “beast,” actually mean. The definition for “beast” can be found in an Old Testament book of the prophet Daniel. In Daniel 7, the figurative word “beast” was defined as world empires that existed during and after Daniel’s time. 1. The first beast in Daniel 7 was a Lion. History shows this Lion beast to be a figurative picture of the Babylonian empire. (Babylon controlled the Holy Land from 606 to 536 B.C.) 2. The next beast in his vision was a Bear. History shows this Bear to be a figurative picture of the Medo-Persian empire. (Medo-Persia controlled the Holy Land from 536 B.C. to 332 B.C.) 3. The third beast was a Leopard. History shows this Leopard to be a figurative picture of the Greek empire (Grecian rulers controlled the Holy Land from 332 B.C. to 65 B.C. when Rome to

      My Wife, The Biblical One
Some who know me well will know that I get very riled up when I see Israel sinning and her leaders giving away land that is rightfully God’s in exchange for false peace. I feel indignant when Israel is being condemned and maligned, and when the world turns a blind eye to her troubles. Nowadays, my wife will be the one to calm me down with these words “Dear, if these things don’t happen, how then shall what God has ordained to happen come to be then?” (I am paraphrasing a little here, but the essence is there). This coming from a woman who used to scoff at my “doomsday prophet” sayings as she used to call them, ha ha! (more…)

      Biblical Investing
For those of you who are worried about how moral your investments are, their is a solution! I ran across this sites today that that markets moral investing to Christians. I guess this is for the person who is not interested in Adultvest. I must admit I was a bit skeptical when I first stumbled upon the site, but all preconceived notions of morality and such aside here is what I have found. The Timothy Plan From their site: The Timothy Plan® family of funds employs specific moral screening criteria designed to avoid investing shareholders’ money in any company that has a pattern of contributing to the cultural degradation of our society. As a result, the Timothy Plan’s screens prohibit investing in companies involved in abortion and/or pornography, non-married lifestyles, as well as companies involved in the production of alcohol, tobacco or gambling. According to their site, and wikipedia, the Timothy plan is a fund company that offers “moral” investments.

      Biblical Patriarchy
Biblical patriarchy is just one theme in the Bible’s grand sweep of revelation, but it is a scriptural doctrine, and faithfulness to Christ requires that it be believed, taught, and lived. This includes the biblical model of the family, the very meaning of fatherhood and motherhood, masculinity, femininity, and the parent and child relationship. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of biblical patriarchy, not because it is greater than other doctrines, but because it is being actively attacked by unbelievers and professing Christians alike. Here is a great article that spells out the Tenets of Biblical Patriarchy.

      The Biblical Squint Test
(Sorry for being out of season, but…..) We were talking on one of the earlier threads and there was some disagreement over the true meaning of certain scriptural passages. (I must be kidding, right? Here?) It seems like we kept going around and around and around. I was suddenly reminded of another familiar situation where I keep going around and around and around. Christmas. Or to be more precise, decorating our home for Christmas. I’ve always loved this time of year, I probably even loved it more when I didn’t have a faith (but that’s another story). But I am not crazy about getting everything down from the attic, setting up the decorations and then having to clean up. I especially don’t like having to trim the tree. It is a lot of work. I used to spend a considerable time making sure that every single strand of tiny lights was evenly distributed on each branch, like my father had taught me. Soon enough I learned how to stand about six feet away and tos

First Presby, Nancy Jane Earnest, is going to be telling stories from the Bible at the Bible Storytelling Festival October 12th and 13th in Gray. Nancy is on from 10:45-11:20 on Saturday the 13th. Here is a bit about Nancy Jane:Greatly influenced by the flannel storyboards and crafts of the vacation Bible schools of her childhood, Nancy Jane learned early on that visual cues make stories come alive. When she set out to tell her own favorite stories, she developed a unique style utilizing on the spot illustration and an active dialogue with her audience. She loves to perform Bible stories not only because their spiritual insight transcends the generations, but also because they are as fresh today as they were thousands of years ago.

A Biblical Travesty: the Slandering of the Pig
(Does this guy look familar? Then keep it to yourselves, please.) The world’s most famous cookbook, the Old Testament, is pretty darn specific about what animals the chosen people could and could not eat. This was quite a list, as can be seen in the book of Deuteronomy; 3 Do not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. [a] 6 You may eat any animal that has a split hoof divided in two and that chews the cud. 7 However, of those that chew the cud or that have a split hoof completely divided you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the coney. [b] Although they chew the cud, they do not have a split hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. 8 The pig is also unclean; although it has a split hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses. 9 Of all the creatures living in the water, you

      Biblical Interpretation
Bob responds in Conversations with Bob! Join in! John, I think we just hit the point at which we have serious disagreement. And Crossan has seriously surprised me. I think the prehistory of Genesis 1-11 tell us much more about life in Israel/Judah than they do about the Neolithic age. My underlying assumption about the proper way to interpret the Biblical text is to try and read it through the intent of the writers/editors speaking to their time. So I don’t think Genesis speaks about the Neolithic age. There may be edited memories in the Bible going back to the middle bronze age but not before. I think Crossan has overreached here. The Cain/Abel story is about the cultural clash between the nomadic life of shepherds and the settled life of those who own land and work it. And yes there are certainly aspects of conflict between the nomads and the village people. But this reflects a time in the life of Israel, not the Neolithic age. And notice who is more acceptable to

If you believe what you read, this is quite possibly the best Reggae record ever. At least that's what about 50 people said on Amazon. And we all know that Amazon customer reviews are like the law, only moreso. It's produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, which is always a good sign, and the singing is quite good. Best ever? I have no idea. You tell me...The Congos - Sodom and GomorrowActually, I think an even better match would be Saddam and Gamera...... but maybe that's just me.

      Is life insurance biblical?
A friend asked recently if there was any biblical precedence for life insurance. His assertion was that if God takes care of his people, why carry life insurance. I would just offer this from 1 Timothy 5:8, “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” I have offered the opinion in previous blogs that men often think of themselves, and especially their egos and their money, ahead of their own wife and children. In Proverbs 15:27 it says “A greedy man brings trouble to his family”. Bottom line. It is God’s plan that a husband and father should ensure that his family is taken care of, and I don’t think I would be stretching that same thought to include that a single parent, man or woman, should ensure that their children are taken care of.  Please join me in sharing bible verse that supports this idea.

      Biblical View of Truth
Perhaps you have never given the idea much thought. Maybe you do not see the need to give it much thought. I should mention though, that your perception of what is truth, or the manner in which you obtain your knowledge may be slightly more flawed than you are aware. I am not sure about the rest of the world, but in America, we are constantly bombarded by "science".This week, eggs are good for you. Next week they are bad for you. Tomorrow they will cause cancer.A glass of wine a day is healthy. No alcohol is good for you.We are all familiar with these statements from the scientific community. However no one told you that "science" is not as sturdy as it appears. As a Christian you are under obligation to have a change in epistemology, that is, your theory of knowledge. This article should give you a good introduction to what our view of truth is to be.The Biblical View of Truth

      Biblical Creation Summarized
Like most doctrinal statements, the basic premise of creation is easy to understand at its surface: To glorify himself, God created the universe from nothing, and it was good. Prior to the creation, nothing existed except for God himself. This is called creation ex nihilo, or “creation out of nothing”. This means that there is no matter in the universe that is eternal. If matter existed before God, He would have no right to rule over it and we would have no guarantee that He rules over everything. The universe and the unseen spiritual realm were created to bring glory to God and God was very pleased with the creation, calling it good. Humans were a special creation of God, created in God’s image, and the pinnacle of God’s creation. Humans resemble God more than any other creature and are called to rule over them. This biblical account is far more encouraging than the secular view that humans are just an insignificant speck in the immense universe. God the Father was t

Getting Ready For Baby and Birth is Biblical
So, you might all think this is sort of backwards, but I’m officially on paternity leave, though the baby hasn’t come yet. Mindy, on the other hand, is still working and plans to right up until the baby is born. Before you laugh, I’ve got good reason to be off, caring for Mindy and preparing for the baby to come. I know there is a ton to do, I just am not that sure what some of it is. So, I’m making a list, and I’m gonna try and do as much of the list as I can before the baby arrives. But, seeing as I’ve never done this before I could use some help knowing what things I need to do that I might not have thought about yet. Any ideas? Alright, the other thing I thought I’d ramble about, since today is Sunday and I try to be a little more spiritual in nature on Sundays, is about Birth. I’ve appreciated the conversation that struck up when I mentioned the idea of birth being a sacrament. If you missed that feel free to check out my post, but

The Web site allows its network of members to post explicit stories and photos, AP reports. When it learned of Linden's activities with the Web site, the Creation Museum in Kentucky pulled the 40-second video in which he appears. "We are currently investigating the veracity of these serious claims of his participation in projects that don't align with the biblical standards and moral code upon which the ministry was founded," a spokesman for Answers in Genesis, which built the newly opened museum, said in a

Non-Biblical Documents from the Ancient Near East
While reading non-Biblical ancient Near Eastern documents I could not help but to notice the apparent lack of multiple manuscript support as evidenced by the numerous gaps in the narrative accounts. These stories were not well preserved. A guess as to why might be that these stories were not accurate portrayals of history so they were not treated as history. The Old Testament, however, has at least enough copies in existence to show us the full story. I do not know how many copies that we have for each ancient Near Eastern text nor do I know how many copies we have of the Old Testament, but this argument does not depend on specific numbers. It depends on motivation. The Old Testament was preserved because it is true. The ancient Near Eastern documents were partially lost because they were not. I still have copies of important books I read many years ago because they are important to me in some way and helped to shape my life, but I couldn’t begin to tell you where my childhood copy

      Booking Through Thursday: Truly Biblical
Truly BiblicalJust out of curiosity, as we enter into Passover and Easter season... have you ever read the Bible? Just the odd chapter or Psalm? The whole thing? (Or, almost the whole thing? It's some heavy reading, of course, and those "begats" get kind of tedious.) I might have read the entire Bible once or twice or fifteen times before. And I avoid the whole "thee" and "begat" nonsense by using a modern translation. If so, was it from religious motivation or from a literary perspective? Stuck with nothing else to read in a hotel room the Gideon's have visited? Any combination? Yes.If not, why not? Against your religious principles? Too boring? Just not interested? Something you're planning on taking care of when you get marooned on a desert island? There's no not, so it wasn't too boring, and it's been a long time since the whole desert island experience. And while we're on the subject... what about the other great religious works out there? Are they more to your liking? Lesse

Eric Auerbach on the Tyrannical Nature of Biblical Narratives:
Eric Auerbach argues that the Bible has a literary quality that is significantly different than other types of ancient literature. As opposed to the oftentimes flat characters of ancient literature, Biblical characters are "fraught with background." There is a figural context to many of the characters seen in the Scriptures. This contributes to the fact that Scripture does not simply claim to portray reality, but rather to present the "only real world." Biblical narratives are not trying to help you understand your world, but are constructing for you an "alternate reality." The real world, the Bible claims, is the one that it alone presents. In the midst of a comparison between Homer's epics and Moses' Pentateuch, Auerbach notes,The Bible's claim to truth is not only far more urgent than Homer's, it is tyrannical. It excludes all other claims. The world of the Script

Biblical Defense of the Sacrament of Confession
As promised, here is my defense of the Sacrament of Confession. "dremarshall" asked the following question in the Holy Culture Radio forum:Do you still go to confession, is it important, if so why, and how does that apply biblically. That is a good question, and I am happy to provide the answer.Do I still go to confession? Most certainly! It is a regular part of my spiritual life. Is it important? Most certainly! Why? Because it is the means through which the Lord has willed to forgive our sins, particularly the most grievous ones. Catholics believe that mortal sin can only be forgiven through the Sacrament of Confession (cf. CIC, 960). Normatively speaking, a prayer will not suffice, for John has said: "There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that" (1 Jn 5:16).The biblical defense of this sacrament usually begins with Jn 20:Jn 20:21-2321 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." 22 And when he had said this,

      Is the Secret Rapture Biblical?
One of the most controversial subjects in relation to the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus, is whether or not there is a Secret Rapture of Christians seven years prior to His return. We know from Paul's writings that at the last trump, when the trumpet sounds the dead in Christ will rise first and those believers on earth will be changed in an instant and receive our new immortal bodies 1 Corinthians 15:51-53, "Behold, I show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump:for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” This raises the question, if there had already been a Christian rapture seven years earlier, why would Paul be telling them that he expects them to still be on earth (remembering that Paul did not know the timing of the Lord's return and wrote with
