Why this song popped into my head this morning, I couldn't begin to tell you. But a quick YouTube search yielded a pretty cool clip from a 1988 gig on Daytona Beach. Spring break (?), complete with sand and waves in the background, is not the usual scene conjured by memories of old Bad Brains gigs. I usually think of them shredding up the little stage at the old 9:30 Club in DC, or bouncing off
Gene Tunney, heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 1926 to 1928, is probably best remembered by sports fans for his storied bouts against Jack Dempsey, especially the second one (the famous "long count" match). Tunney was not typical of most of his boxing competition, much preferring to turn his fights into chess matches rather than slugfests, so it should probably be no surpris
Oxford University research has helped understanding of the so-called ‘cocktail party effect’ how brains develop the ability to pinpoint and focus on particular sounds among a background of noise. The study, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, has implications for the emergence of hearing abilities in children and for restoring hearing aids.

A new study confirms that exercise can reverse the age-related decline in the production of neural stem cells in the hippocampus of the mouse brain, and suggests that this happens because exercise restores a brain chemical that promotes the production and maturation of new stem cells.Neural stem cells and progenitor cells differentiate into a variety of mature nerve cells that have different funct

On November 4, 2008 - which will be a momentous Election Day - Bad Brains will revisit their own history at DC’s 930 Club. I guess they’re no longer “Banned in DC” hmm? Ba dum ch! (In 1979 the Brains were the subject of an “unofficial ban” by nearly every venue in the city.) They’ve [...]
A new research at the University of California has suggested that our brains work fastest at the age of 39 and after that, at age 40, the signals go downhill. The fatty sheath which coats the the nerve cells acts as an insulation and it allows rapid bursts of signals around the brain and body. But at age 40, the body loses the battle to repair the protective sheaths.Prof George Bartzokis of the Uni
Ted Williams, arguably the greatest baseball hitter of all-time, once said, "I think without question the hardest single thing to do in sport is to hit a baseball". Williams was the last major league player to hit .400 for an entire season and that was back in 1941, 67 years ago! In the 2008 Major League Baseball season that just ended, the league batting average for all players was .264, while t

With the MLB League Championship Series' beginning this week, Twenty-six teams are wondering what it takes to reach the "final four" of baseball which leads to the World Series. The Red Sox, Rays, Phillies and Dodgers understand its not just money and luck. Over 162 games, it usually comes down to the fundamentals of baseball: pitching, hitting and catching. That sounds simple enough. So, why
I have this pet theory. We are often attracted to the media’s handling of a story not because we’re particularly interested in the story itself, but to see how the media handles the story.

The world's first Frankenstein-like creature has finally been created. Working on link strategies can be an extremely frustrating process because of the difficulty in getting other people to put the link on their website - let alone to do it without having to give a reciprocal link. I can't say enough - I believe reciprocal links are increasingly meaningless. But then I get asked - "well how am I supposed to get links if we are not swapping". It is quite simple -

Sometimes, during my daily browsing of the Web for news and interesting angles on the sport science world, I get lucky and hit a home run. I stumbled on this great May 2007 Wired article by Jennifer Kahn, Wayne Gretzky-Style 'Field Sense' May Be Teachable. It ties together the people and themes of my last three posts, focusing on the concept of perception in sports.

Researchers using brain scans have found new evidence that biology—and not environment—is at the core of sexual orientation. Scientists at the Stockholm Brain Institute in Sweden report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA that gay men and straight women share similar traits—most notably in the size of their brains and the activity of the amygdala—an area of the brain
An interesting article has been posted on Yahoo News.
A Swedish research claims that straight women and gay men may have similar brains.
[...] scientists tracked connectivity in the amygdala, the region of the brain involved in emotional learning and in activating the fight-or-flight response. They noted strong similarities between gay men and straight women, and lesbians and straight men.

Even prose spilled out of his lips like a divine sweet song, and he could enthral huge crowds with his powerful speech. Thanks to the ubiquity of text on the Internet, not to mention the popularity of text-messaging on cell phones, we may well be reading more today than we did in the 1970s or 1980s, when television was our medium of choice. But it’s a different kind of reading, and behind it lies a different kind of thinking—perhaps even a new sense of the self. “We are not only what we read,” says Maryanne

A study found that cannabinoid receptor antagonists, a relatively new class of weight loss drugs, stunted the brains of juvenile mice. It is possible that such drugs could have similar effects on human children.
Several new anti-obesity treatments, including Merck's taranabant and rimonabant -- sold in Europe as Acomplia -- reduce appetite by blocking the brain's cannabinoid receptors. But they also have disturbing side effects that are only now becoming apparent.
Other researchers have found that cannabinoid receptor blockers interfere with neural connectivity in rat brains -- a phenomenon associated with depression in humans. The FDA has so far refused to approve Acomplia because it appears to cause anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Suicide victims who were abused as children have clear genetic changes in their brains, Canadian researchers reported on Tuesday in a finding they said shows neglect can cause biological effects.
The findings offer potential ways to find people at high risk of suicide, and perhaps to treat them and prevent future suicides.

Ever since mobile phones got popular on the worldwide markets, researchers have been trying to find a link between their emitted radiation and brain cancer conditions. However, given the fact that the achieved results are absolutely irrelevant, anti-mobile phone groups started to pinch other sensitive chords: gonad cancer. The researchers' explanations would always detail on the fact that, while using the mobile phone, users get the device dangerously close to the parietal bone. Moreover, while holding it inside the pocket, the handheld device spreads radiation fields around, which could trigger miscellaneous conditions related to the crotch area. However, all the studies conducted by now omitted an essential aspect of using mobile phones: the device almost always rests in the pal
Northwestern University researchers of washington have pioneered a technique called targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), which allows an artificial limb to respond directly to the brain’s signals, making it much easier to use than traditional motorized body parts. The technique, which is still under development, allows wearers to open and close their artificial hands and bend and straighten their artificial elbows nearly as naturally as their own arms.“The idea is that when you lose your arm, you lose the motors, the muscles and the structural elements of the bones. But the control information should still be there in the residual nerves,” said Dr Todd A Kuiken, a physiatrist at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and professor at Northwestern University. He conceived the idea of t

As a New Yorker and someone that lives in Brooklyn a big victory was won today. Today the New York State Assembly rejected a "congestion pricing" proposal by Mayor Bloomberg(recently passed by the NY City Council)that would have charged cars and commercial vehicles 8 dollars and trucks 21 dollars to enter certain zones within Manhattan during peak hours from 6am - 6pm. The plan was seen as an environmental plan to reduce pollution. The money collected from congestion pricing would theoretically have been used to pay for upgrades and more service within the MTA.The NY Daily News reports the major contributing as factor to why the congestion pricing plan was killed: Its fate was sealed after Bloomberg refused to negotiate major changes in his plan to charge cars $8 to enter Manhattan below

I moved to America about one year ago after living and traveling all over the world and thought I would be pretty competent around personal finance and investing activities. However I soon realized that I had a lot to learn and was already behind the curve for my age group. So I started this blog as a way to track, record and share ideas along the way. Most of the topics on which I write about, you could find on the thousands of personal finance and investing sites currently out there. What I bring to it is a personal touch and unique perspective based on my own direct and indirect experiences. So what I write is what I live. New Statistics Canada figures show that along with tradespeople, there is a huge surge of post-secondary school graduates choosing Edmonton over trendy spots like Montreal and Vancouver. Why because smart people go where the money is!In Vancouver you can spend close to 70% of your income on housing, Montreal you can get a job but pay higher taxes than you would in Alberta.Or you could chose Alberta with the lowest taxes in Canada, highest salaries and enjoy quite good housing affordability. No wonder over 160,000 people have moved to Alberta over the last 7 years. With a higher quality of life and virtually limitless opportunities Alberta is where young smart professionals are choosing to make their home.
Sad day yesterday. I had to remove the cool 8 ball attachment from the shifter in my car. This, obviously, downgraded the car’s coolness factor to “cool,” due to the fact that I still have my fuzzy dice hanging on the rear view. It had been “bitchin’” with the 8 ball gearshift cover, and I was [...]
Peanut is full of interesting things to share these days.I blogged previously about the how the preschool lessons were being interpreted by the 4 and 5 year olds in his class. They are really interested in historical figures who lived a long time ago, because that means... they are DEAD!He saw a Scooby-Doo cartoon that had a mad scientist with brains in jars and informed me the other night that he had dug up some brains from the cemetery, and I was a little sad that he didn't call it a "ripgarden" anymore. One of the little things about having a kid with a steel-trap memory is that once you correct him, he's got it. (So long, cute made-up phrases! I'm glad I have a blog so I'll remember this stuff in time to mortify you at your wedding!)After a brief intermission where I explained that
Literally speaking, brain drain is the draining of the brains. People who are educated here go in search of the Promised Land to earn their living. They leave their hometowns and go abroad. Once they settle there and become accustomed and adapt themselves to the style of living there, they find it

With the year winding down, the last few months have seen the addition of a number of new Stars to the QuirkStation. Including our new array of Trojan interns along with some fresh faces in the various departments, our reinforcements haven’t arrived a moment too soon.
While many workplaces start to wind down around the December period, at Quirk we don’t like to conform to the norm. As such we have hit a period of frenzied madness that has resulted in many a near-aneurism, and in many much-needed Friday drinks sessions.
I must admit, when the coffee machine finally kicked the bucket earlier on in the week, I did have my doubts whether we were going to make it. However, a short trip to find a replacement messianic device got us quickly back on track.
At any rate, I digress. Our new complement of interns are proving to be real lifesavers for both Tim and myself. They’ve helped us out quite a bit already, and Tim and I owe them a large measure of thanks for keeping our
I recently explored the ability of the brain to stay “fit” and avoid the possibility of Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive losses through Dr. Michael Merzenich’s “Brain Fitness Program.” According to revered international author, science journalist, PhD, Dr. of Psychology Daniel Goleman as interpreted by Gina Stepp author of familymatters.vision.org:
“People who are good at maintaining important relationships in their lives have always instinctively known what researchers are now discovering: good relationships are crucial to our health and well-being”
Dr. Goleman posits the following about the new field of Social Neuroscience: “Our interactions with anybody are a two way street where one person’s brain is setting the other person’s brain in any of a thousand emotional states.” Our brains are built to connect in ways we have never realized in the past. The “chatter” between brains is the basi
Interesting piece I saw on CNN. Here's where to catch it online.
What I liked best of all out of this piece is that parents in San Diego, in their first year check up for the wee-ones, are given a questionnaire, and depending on the answers, the children could be quickly placed in a study to see if they are autisitc...and thus, can begin early intervention therapy.
Good stuff.
