After a long climb up the mountain roads of the Cabot Trail with our 32 ft trailer - on one side the mountains and on the other side the cliffs with a breathtaking ocean view - we arrived at our next campground. The reception was surprisingly cold, but we chalked it up to youth who preferred hanging out with his friends to working in his father’s busines

It has been shown that the land surface of the Maritime Provinces is readily divisible into systems of uplands and lowlands; moreover, on looking at the maps, we see that the grain of the country, that is, the direction of the rock strikes, is mostly in a N. It has been emphasized that the uplands are all underlain by hard crystalline rocks. The lowlands, on the other hand, are found on the weaker sandstones, shales and limestones; sedimentaries in large part belonging to the Carboniferous system. The Chaleur Bay region was a basin of deposition as far back as Devonian and Carboniferous times. The present lowland, developed on these rocks, consists of

Sometimes at these events all the wines blend into each other bit not at this one. That is why I will post a tasting note on every table/grower who made an impression and there were alot. I've just seen this article about the Surrealist Manifesto in The Guardian book pages, while catching up on my Bloglines subscriptions as my blogroll appears to be down - temporarily I hope.I developed a minor obsession with André Breton at University while writing a paper on Modernism and it has continued ever since. In this paper I concentrated on the Surrealists, of whom I found Breton to be undoubtedly the most interesting and intellectual. A couple of years ago while in Paris we visited the Pompidou Centre where there was a Dada exhibition and although the endless succession of ready-made artworks became just a little tedious after a while (although it was great to see Duchamp's Fountain, just before some maniac hit it with a hammer) when I found the little section at the back displa
Only the word freedom can still exalt me. I consider it capable of sustaining indefinitely the old human fanaticism. Doubtless it satisfies my only legitimate aspiration. - André Breton, Surrealist Manifesto

On November 20, Malan Breton hosted a trunk show to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity/Fight AIDS in at the Warwick Hotel in NY. Visitors got to talk with Malan while they shopped for clothing from his Spring 2008 collection. Malan was as dapper and charming as ever. We dished about the first episode of Project Runway Season 4. I would be a cad to mention his criticisms of the designers, but will share that his favorites this week included Christian and Jillian. He also talked about the options for his February 2008 fashion show – he might be in the Bryant Park tents next year!Last, but assuredly not least, we looked through his collection together, because I was not going to pass up this opportunity to own a Breton original. While I had attended his fashion show in September, it is a quite different experience to see the clothes up close, feel the fabrics, and examine the construction. The fabrics (silk organzas, mylars, chiffons and sateens) were so luxurious that you had to touch them.

BPR's own Phaolo and Ace Field Reporter Trish attended Malan's Sample Sale last week. Malan had lots of news - here is Phaolo's report:He'll be showing this Fall, not sure of the date yet, but he'll let us know ASAP. He said he took Tim's advice and the clothes will be more wearable. He said he'll save the feathers and beads for his private clients. He'll also be showing Menswear. And Mens underwear. He said it'll be a little risque. I asked, can I have tickets? He's coming out with a fragrance. He's closing his little Atelier in September. He'll have a showroom and a new bigger place this fall. He said soon he'll be in U.S. dept store. He's Exec Producing two shows and he's trying to get Amanda Fields to be in one of them. He was a sweetheart.
The tale of the little black dress.By Maddie (Made possible by Malan Breton and readers like you)It was a hot day in mid-May when I journeyed to the East Village in New York City. I was giddy and giggling despite the sweltering Tuesday afternoon. You see, I was coming in for a very special visit with my darling friend and fellow glamour-puss, Malan Breton. A few days before I discovered Malan auctioning off the most precious little-black-dress which would be perfect for my summer trip to Venice, Italy. I immediately called him and and politely asked (begged) for the fabulous frock. Being the darling he is, he agreed to let me have it. We arranged a time for a fitting and I came in. We greeted each other with hugs and kisses and Malan got to work. He had made a sort of rough-copy of the dress and fitted it to my body. I must say, Malan is an absolute master of his craft (“Did I prick you?” “Nope.”). He handled the dress with extreme care as well as the champagne sash and in a ve
Ava Gaudet plays "Gina Gamberro" on Ugly Betty. Doesn't she look great in these Malan Breton designs? Here is a link to her website. I wonder who Malan will be dressing next...
Malan has extended an invitation to BPRs to attend this party celebrating Spiegeltent. Please let us know if you plan to attend. We'd love a field report!

A Haras is a stud farm for the preservation and development of the breed. This one at Hennebont (our local town) has fantastic old stables filled with these magnificent stallions. Solid and powerful they seem quite content to be visited by the likes of me with my sketchbook.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 85 euros (Europe). This includes the postage.
Malan Breton and chef Cat Cora collaborated on this blue dress modeled by Melrose Bickerstaff. It was auctioned for $1000 to benefit Action Against Hunger. Photos by Mark Rupp.Edited to add - From Zulema: I had a wonderful experience at the event. I was paired w/ chef Marcus Samuelson of Aquavit.
Dearest Scarlett,I am doing a lot of charity coming up this month, which is so important to me, there was a time when I had nothing so it is very important for me to give back to the community. These are some events I will be involved with.I will be designing a chef's coat with Iron Chef Cat Cora and it will be auctioned off for an Action Against Hunger event on April 12th. (You can watch the movie featuring Malan as well as Diana Eng.)My company will be donating a $6,400 gown for the 18th Annual GLAAD Awards for the silent auction. I will also be attending this event on Monday, March 26th.My company will be donating a $5,000 custom gown for Live Out Loud. This is for a scholarship which makes me very proud that anything I make can go to someone being able to learn.Well I should go I am still working on clothes for Doug Jones (Pans Labyrinth) He is going to be the new Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It's a little rainy here but perfect weather to work in.H
We continue our series of "advice to the season four hopefuls" posts. Today we hear from Malan Breton. Dear Laura,My advice to the hopefuls is this: Come with a model in your clothes, I did this season one, two, and three and it is the most effective way of showing your clothes.Be organised and ready, fashion does not wait for anyone. Presentation in the industry is 60 percent of what editors etc are looking for. Also make sure your pieces are made beautifully, construction is key. Also, choose clothing items that best suit your style, be confident when the judges ask you questions regarding your design choices. Be very specific on your thoughts and do not be wishy washy about them. Listen and do not be afraid, the panel wants you to be good.Present items that the mainstream can relate too, a goose feather dress with hood detail unless done beautifully will only leave the judges to wonder if you are ready for the mainstream market that American fashion requires.I do love couture but th
SOLDBreton Horse.20cm x 20cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvas.I love these beautiful, huge Breton horses; the solid presence of them is both slightly frightening and comforting at the same time. I adore them, I love the smell of the stables and the peaceful noise of the horses chewing and breathing. Breton Morning16cm x 16cm. 6.3in x 6.3in.Oil on stretched canvas“In Brittany at this time of year, as the trees rapidly loose their leaves and the pale sun highlights a damp and waiting earth, there is a sense of ancient forces. Old beliefs live within the stones and forests; mossy paths hold powerful secrets and big sky’s watch over this Celtic land. Walking out this morning it is as if everything is for the first time. The ancient magic is here and now. The world is new. Which I suppose it is, every single day, it is just that we don’t always notice it.”This is for sale.60 pounds (UK) 116 dollars (USA) and 90 euros (Europe). Malan Breton = Glamour!Malan Breton showed his 2007 Fall/Winter collection this morning at the prestigious Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Click here to see the first images we have of the collection. Check back with us for more coverage of the event!Edited to add: Click here for a report from BPR's own Trish!
Dear Laura,I just wanted to say thank you for your support and coverage of my showing at Mercedes Benz fashion week. This season the collection paid homage to structure, architecture and a young Elizabeth Taylor. It was also an ode to the many new and wonderful friends I have made since my departure from the show.Sadly, the looks list that was printed for the event was not the final copy so many of the details were not featured like the quality wools and silks etc. There were so many detailed sleeves and trousers this season, I am sorry that the lists were not accurate.Click here for an accurate list of all of Malan's looks and models as well as the rest of his note to BPR.
So, I'm only a week late posting some fashion week reviews but better late than never, right? Anyway, on to the fashion:Reality shows aren't accurate predictors of talent. Take Jennifer Hudson. She may not have won American Idol, but that hasn't stopped her rise to superstardom. The same can be said of Malan Breton. Being eliminated early from Project Runway hasn't stopped him from designing fabulous clothes. He is the first designer from last season to show at Fashion Week, and his strong showing proves that he didn't need Project Runway after all.As Michael Kors would say, Malan 'really knows a woman's body.' His dresses a perfectly draped, and look so feminine and flowy. My favorites are the two-tone muted gray A-line (being modeled by Melrose from Top Model?), and the A-line tube dress resembling a disco ball. I especially adore the floor length kimono-style belted 'robe' dress - casual glam at its best.I think these dresses would look incredible paired up with one of th
Yesterday we went to the 150th anniversary of the "Haras National†in Hennebont. In English that is the anniversary of the National Stud. It is the home of the Breton Horse; this is a huge and very impressive horse. I am told that the Stud at Hennebont was built by Napoleon to breed these horses who were used as war horses and that they were trained to stamp on heads! Now I am not sure of the truth of this but look at these photos and then imagine being charged by these animals, well I know what I would be doing…running for the hills! Whatever they were bread for they are fabulous horses, truly magnificent and yes, I am planning some paintings, how could I not?To find out more about this breed of horse click here and to visit the French web site of the Hennebont Haras click here
