Dog-be-Gone: Canine Cuisine in East Timor

As we enjoy lunch in his hometown of Tutuala, my guide Julito asks me: "Senhor Sam, you eat in the dark?" - at least that's what I think he asks. His English is good but it comes in a strong East Timorese accent. What does he mean; am I able to eat in the dark, or am I a nocturnal diner by habit? For th

      Canine Hepatozoonosis
Say what, I know, that’s what I said too. Therefore, here is the medical description taken from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine website… Hepatozoon americanum / canis Canine hepatozoonosis is an emerging protozoal tick-borne disease of dogs that has been reported in the United States of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Florida. The causative agent of canine hepatozoonosis in North America is Hepatozoon americanum. It induces severe myositis and gait abnormalities, and is transmitted to dogs (the intermediate host) through the definitive host, Amblyomma maculatum. Another species is H. canis that causes a similar disease on dogs outside of North America. Transmission occurs when a dog ingests an infected tick, and then the organisms are released and invade canine host cells, where asexual reproduction and multiplication occur through schiziogony (Ewing & Panciera, 2003). The Ornamental Canine
Well, we put up the Christmas tree today, which meant another trip down memory lane around here. Most of the ornaments displayed on our tree were gifts. David and I take time each year to look at them and talk about them before they are hung. There's the wooden snowman and tiny little gingerbread man my grandmother, God rest her soul, made a couple of years prior to her death, and a snowflake

      Servicing Your Canine's Needs
Article Title: Servicing Your Canine's NeedsAuthor: Ajeet KhuranaFew things compare to the kind of comfort that a dog can bringyou. After all, it is man's best friend. Come home after a longday of work and your canine will be at the door barking welcomeand wagging his tail furiously. Rebuke him for some wickednessand get ready for a day of skulking around with his tail betweenhis legs. Of course, he will just be waiting for a signal fromyou that indicates that you have forgiven him. Dogs are amongthe most forgiving creatures in the world, and among the mostloving as well. In this day and age of late marriages and even laterpregnancies, many couples who want to become parents do a testrun by adopting a dog. As puppies begin to be treated aschildren and family members, it is inevitable that a demand willarise for pet services that extend beyond the regular trips tothe neighborhood vet. Canine Parvovirus - A Serious Cantagious Disease in Dogs
Canine parvovirus, sometimes known simply as 'parvo,' is a serious contagious disease caused by a virus. This illness is spread when dogs come into contact with the feces of infected animals. Dog parks, highway rest stops and popular walking trails in cities are areas where dog feces are often found, and where an unvaccinated dog may pick up the virus. Humans may also unknowingly bring the virus home on the bottom of their shoes or on their car tires, so dogs who never go outside the yard can still be infected with this disease. The virus can live in the soil or other contaminated surfaces for as long as six months. Most animal shelters and kennels make every effort to avoid the spread of contagious diseases by cleaning the kennels with bleach, but any time that large numbers of animals are kept in close quarters, there is a possibility of infection, so keeping up on your dog's vaccinations is always a good idea.Although puppies are more commonly affected by this illness than adult d

Book Review: Divine Canine by The Monks of New Skete
I just finished reading Divine Canine by The Monks of New Skete. I had heard of them before but until now had never read one of their books. In the book, we follow Brother Christopher as he trains a number of dogs with various issues. And, rather than lumping all the dogs together and saying this is how it’s done, the first thing he does is that he gets to know the dogs’ backgrounds, what issues their people are dealing with in regards to the dog, and how that dog fits into the family. After he has the background information he is able to tailor a program specifically for that dog. And, because the dogs in the book are all unique, the solutions for them are unique as well - even if some of them need work on the same skills. The pet owners receive some training as well. Initially the dogs stay with the Monks while they are being trained, but once the owners come to pick the dogs up, they go through their own training session. Brother Christopher talks with them about their o

Dog Genetics: The Huge Problem Of Canine Genetic Disease
The prevalence of genetic disease in dogs today can only be described as alarmingly common which is bad news for dog owners and dog lovers alike. The following is a list to illustrate the magnitude of the problem:1. On average all dogs carry at least 4-5 defective genes.2. Over 500 genetic diseases have been identified in dogs.3. Hip Dysplasia (HD) (an inherited orthopedic disease that may result in the dog becoming lame) commonly occurs in 60 dog breeds and occurs less frequently in another 110 breeds; thus this disease is seen in over 170 breeds of dog.4. 119 dog breeds are commonly afflicted with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), a disease that quite often leads to blindness in the affected animal.5. Of all the dog breeds the Poodle suffers from the most number of genetic diseases...145! The reason why the Poodle is predisposed to so many genetic diseases is because not only are there 3 distinct sizes of Poodle in this breed, the large count of disease is a reflection of the popula

      Conditioning the Canine Athlete
Since I am not an expert, or even a novice for that matter, in this field, I sought out someone that could write just a couple articles on this subject. Well, I came up empty handed. For example, I emailed: Auburn Veterinary College - No response Christine Zink DVM, PhD - She is the author of the book, Peak Performance, Coaching the Canine Athlete, and the only one to respond. She said that she was away on business right now but would get back with me when she returned. I waited a month and emailed her again with no reply. Robert L. Gillette, DVM - I met this doctor at Auburn University, where he teaches. We had our Lab there when she was being checked out for hip dysplasia and I spoke to Dr. Gillette at some length about flyball. He has a website called Sportvet.com. He never responded. Carol Helfer, DVM - I got her name from Christine Davis of Inside Flyball. Christine told me that she had done some writing for her for an article on Inside Flyball. She never responded. (m

      Canine Justice
This whole situation with Michael Vick and the illegal dog fighting activities he pleaded guilty to is getting way off track from the actual problem at hand. Many debates have surfaced attributing the horrendous treatment of those animals on socio-economic upbringing. Though I agree this is a legitimate argument, the focus should be on the rising problem of dog fighting activities, the abuse and torture of the animals involved, and the need for more strict law enforcement. In one article I read, an estimated 400,000 people participate in some way with dog fighting. Many children are helpers or spectators which only helps raise insensitive adults. Some news outlets have hit upon these issues and showed footage of the dog fights themselves - probably for dramatic effect. But most of the main stream that I've heard are more concerned with Vick's NFL career. This is a serious problem for this country that needs continued coverage and debate. The one good thing that came out of this case

      Know all about canine hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a term that not many people are familiar with. In fact, the ones who have even heard about this term do not know what it is all about. In this case, it will be better to first discuss hypothyroidism. First of all it is a hormonal disorder that has affected a lot of people around the world. And since the anatomy of canines is similar to human anatomy, these innocent animals can also develop this disorder, which is called canine hypothyroidism. The condition of hypothyroidism is related to the malfunctioning of the thyroid gland. The amount of thyroid that the gland secretes becomes lower than the normal level. This further affects the whole metabolism of the body. The thyroid gland controls the proper functioning of all other hormonal glands in the body through the secretion of the thyroid hormone. So, if the gland is not working properly, other glands will also stop responding in a positive manner. Since the disorder is not restricted to one part or organ of the body

ACLU sues Kennel Association over canine intelligence tests
ACLU lawyer Bernard Fulton today announced a lawsuit against the American Kennel Society on behalf of Afghan Hounds for being ranked lowest on the dog intelligence scale. "We feel these tests are invalid as many of the questions are clearly biased towards German Shepherds and other European breeds. Afghan Hounds have been systematically discriminated against because of these tests and we feel our clients deserve redress." When asked about the suit, Prince, president of the Afghan Hound Justice Coalition for Justice, commented, "This is wrong. Besides were much smarter than Bassett Hounds. Those are some dumb dogs, let me tell ya. Once..." before being cut off from Mr. Fulton.

The two dogs were mother and daughter and both were diagnosed with a week of each other. The mother had a stomach tumour and the daughter had bone cancer. Whether earlier detection of the cancers would meant that they might not have been put down is impossible to say, but there are signs that you can look for to make it easier to diagnose canine cancer.
