Unlike the tropical island scenery many visitors associate with Thailand, Chiang Mai is ringed by misty mountains and jungle – it is also in close proximity to the apexes of China, Myanmar and Laos, otherwise referred to as the "Golden Triangle".Founded 700 years ago as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom (Lanna means "a million rice fields") Chiang Mai is home to more than 300 temples and a multitude of national parks, mountain trails, waterfalls and ancient ruins. In recent years the town has become increasingly metropolitan, though not quite to the extent of other Thai cities, including the nation's bustling capital, Bangkok. In Chiang Mai, visitors will see

Wat Phra Singh is easy to visit as it is right in the center of Chiang Mai city, located on the corner of Singharat and Ratchadamnoen Rd road. Wat Phra Singh was built inside the old city walls at a time when Chiang Mai was the capital of the northern Thai Lanna or Lan Na kingdom. The wat was originally built in 1345. It may have simply been a stupa erected by a king (and descendant of the great Mangrai) to honour his father. The stupa still stands, but most of the buildings you see on the site today are of much more recent vintage. There are three main buildings, namely the Stupa, Viharn Lai Kam, and Haw Trai.Wat Chiang Man - built by the city's founder, King Mengrai. CHIANG MAI -Thailand
Population: 500,000Area Code: (66) 53Chiang Mai is less worldly, and takes itself less seriously, than the 'City of Angels'. Even its name, the 'New City', belies its long independent history as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, the 'Land of a Million Rice Fields'. Cradled between the mountains and the Mekong river and separated from the Central Plains by dense jungle, it took the arrival of the railway to end seven centuries of isolation interrupted mainly by marauding Burmese and Siamese armies. The Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai

The prices in the bazaar at night are not fixed so you can really do some bargaining. If you are a hunter of good bargains you can try to be there very early. Doi Sutep - Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city. It is 438 miles (700 kilometers) north of Bangkok and many people believe that is far better living in Chiang Mai than in Bangkok. When a visitor comes to Chiang Mai the first time, they are always awed and taken aback by the splendor of Doi Sutep Mountain which is part of the ring of mountains that surrounds Chiang Mai city. The Doi Sutep Mountain is 3,051 feet high and on the peak of the mountain is a temple which is considered to be the guardian temple of the city. The temple is called Wat Prathat Doi Sutep. The shining pagoda of the temple can be seen from any given point in the city and the temple is the holiest of all temples in Chiang Mai.        In order to reach the temple, one has to drive 17 kilometers through a national park. The temple entrance is guarded by two serpent images and then there is a climb up 300 steps to reach the actual temple. This climb can be difficult for the e

The Lanna Palace Hotel in Chiang Mai
Where to stay in Chiang Mai? The Hobos had the pleasure of visiting Chiang Mai a few weeks ago. We stayed at the Lanna Palace Hotel. I must be honest with all of you; this place was not really worth the cost. Sorry, but this place ended up being about $37 a night and it was not really worth it. Maybe for business travelers this would be a better choice but for backpackers it was not really a value. The room was big but who cares if the bed is super uncomfortable and dirty? There was breakfast included but it was a buffet of stomachaches. Both of us felt super ill after every breakfast. The staff was not very friendly, which is odd for Thailand because everywhere else the people are wonderful, even in budget guesthouses. The “pool” or I like to refer to it as an in-ground ice bucket. This thing was as small as a hot tub and freezing because it is always completely shaded by the building. Not enjoyable at all for the Hobos. The reason why we booked that hotel is because we were tra

Save between $20 and $100 on ALL Hotel Bookings Now! The small seaside town of Hua Hin was special to the Hobos, it was quaint and romantic and we both felt the town had a fun energy about it. Many nights in Hua Hin were spent meeting the locals, having drinks, playing pool and talking to other travelers. We befriended a local pub owner named Paul and his wife Toon on the first night. They own a local bar called the London Bar. It may look like many of the other bars in town, but in this bar had none of the working girls harassing you for drinks and in fact we felt exactly the opposite. The girls were sweet and friendly and were only looking for friendship. We ended up staying at the London Bar guesthouse when we checked out of the Anantara Resort. The rooms are large and clean. There are king sized beds, air conditioning, TV and an ensuite bathroom. The prices were also quite reasonable. When we were invited by the owners of the London bar Paul and Toon to head north to Chia

      Chiang Mai Tour Dilemma
Here is my latest dilemma, why did the chained up monkeys bother me so much when the elephants that were in irons did not? On our third day in Chiang Mai we accompanied the family we are traveling with in Northern Thailand to a series of local attractions. The first place we visited was an elephant sanctuary, which both Alie and I were extremely excited to visit as both of us had fallen in love with the elephants of the Serengeti. This place was slightly different than a wildlife sanctuary because the animals are taught to work and perform tricks. Some of the tricks that we witnessed were playing soccer and painting pictures, which are then sold at very high prices. As we sat watching the elephants play soccer and stack huge tree logs I did not feel sorry for the elephants at all. It did not occur to either of the hobos that what we were watching was cruel and we enjoyed the show immensely. Please check out our photos from the show here The show then finished and we proceeded onto th

I have begun attending classes. Well...actually, I don't really have "class" per se. Instead, I meet with Professors to talk about topics and then read a bunch of books. Pretty sweet, huh? Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that I have been on campus for a little while now, and I thought you might be interested in seeing some pictures of Chiang Mai University. The campus is quite beautiful. It is located at the foot of a mountain, Doi Suthep. Also, there is a reservoir on the edge of campus, Ang Kaew Resevoir. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures of either of these. Oh well, enjoy the pictures I do have. :)~a Spirit House located at the main entrance of the University~~Dhamma Hall, located at the main entrance of the University~~a Lotus Flower coming out of the pond in front of Dhamma Hall~~the Elephant--a revered symbol in Thailand--holding the Flag of Thailand and the Flag of the Monarchy in front of Dhamma Hall~~Buddha images located at Dhamma Hall~

Wat Muen Ngern Gong ::Chiang Mai
Wat Muen Ngern Gong is located on San Larn Road. This temple was first constructed in the time of King Mengrai in local Lanna style. Many rich families in Chiang Mai sponsor this temple since its name. Muen Ngern Gong, means millionaire or riches. Besides these nine, there are also other important temples in Chiang Mai such as, Wat Pan Toa which is located on Phrapokkloa Road. The wooden viharn was carved in local Lanna style and the doors decorated with peacocks. Wat Ku Tao is located behind the Municipal Stadium at the north of the moat. It contains a delightful, almost whimsically constructed chedi shaped like five melons. All five globes are decorated with intricate pieces of coloured porcelain. The outer wall of the temple is decorated with charming murals. Wat Saen Fang is of Burmese style situated in a surprisingly serene spot just off busy Tha Pae Road. Chiang Mai is one of the few places in Thailand where it is possible to find in the heart of the city centuries-old chedis and temples next to modern convenience stores and boutique hotels. The original city layout still exists as a neat square surrounded by a moat with vestiges of the fortified wall and its four main gates offering prime access to the old town. For years, tourists have mistaken Chiang Mai as the northern junction and the base from which they can explore other provinces. The phrase "a day in Chiang Mai is enough to see things around" was common. Today, tourists are surprised by the fact that there is always something new to discover Chiang Mai. This beautifull parc with plenty of trees, flowers and picnicking space, is situated about 25 km east from Bo Sang. (The Umbrella village) Bosang is about 20 km east from Chiang Mai. It is easily to do, when for example you’ll visit Bo Sang and some handycraft centers on this road in the morning, and in the afternoon the hot springs for relaxing. You can take a dive in the hotwater swimming pool, but attention, the water is somewhat more then 40 C., so go slowly inside to pool. Once in the hot water; just relax under the hot waterfall. Entrance fee is not expensive, every Thai family will buy at the entrance some eggs and borrow a basket to boil some eggs for lunch. When you are travelling with 5-6 persons, you can rent also a privat big bathroom and have a closed hot water bath and relax. (200 bath/hr.) By Tedsocoa

All this in the same camp, then we went to an orchird farm and we were returned by 5 pm more or less. 2. Maesa Camp elephant show. It’s a half day tour and they also take you to an orchid farm. The first tour is much better because you have many activities in only one place, the show is very entertaining and cute, the paintings were beautiful. The bamboo rafting is very pleasant, calm and relaxing. The lunch was fine and the farm wonderful. Ah!!! and the ride was very exciting took almost 1 hour. But the elephant show in Maesa is better, the camp is closer to the city, more organized and clean and have more elephants. The elephants are much better take care and have better painting skills, the painting were much beautiful and of course more expensive. In Chiang Dao cost between 600 and 900 bath and

Visit an Ethnic Hilltribe Village While in Chiang Mai or elsewhere in Northern Thailand, I highly recommend making a daytrip excursion to a traditional village of one of the local hilltribe ethnic groups. Over 100 years ago, the Hilltribe peoples migrated south from China into what are now Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The six major tribes are the Karen (Kariang, Yang), the Hmong (Meo), the Yao (Mien), the Akha (Ekaw), the Lisu (Lisaw), and the Lahu (Mussur). The main profession of all these tribes is farming, and all of them tend to migrate whenever they feel that the soil at their present location is becoming depleted. Each tribe is distinct, with its own culture, religion, language, art, and dress. With Thailand undergoing rapid modern development, it is difficult yet to say whether these tribes will continue in their traditional ways of life, or whether they will eventually be assimilated into mainstream Thai society. Practically this was the first Council held in Thailand and reflected the intensive study of Buddhism during the time. Although Wat Doi Suthep is the most recently built of the temples dating from the Lanna Thai period, it is the symbol of Chiang Mai. The site was selected by sending an elephant to roam at will up the mountainside. When it reached this spot, it trumpeted, circled three times, and knelt down - which was interpreted as a sign indicating an auspicious site. Entrance to the temple is free for those who wish to climb the 300-plus steps; alternatively, there's a cable car with a 50 baht fare for foreigners. Buddhist Temples in Chiang Mai
Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai show off a mixture of architectural styles that reflect the varied heritage of Northern Thailand. Elements from Lanna Thai, Burmese, Sri Lankan and Mon temples have all been used in one form or another. Intricate woodcarvings and protective Naga serpent staircases add a flamboyance that reflects an awesome reverence for the Buddhist religion. Gilded umbrellas, guardian figures from the tales of the Ramayana and stupas trimmed with gold filigree combine to heighten the overall effect. To date, there have been some 300 temples constructed in Chiang Mai an its outskirts. Visitors should take the time to visit the most revered temples in the city, built during the noble Lanna Thai dynasty. The largest ones draw crowds, but it's well worth wandering off the beaten path and finding a temple not on the tour bus circuit. Wat Chiang Man : Chiang Mai
This temple was built in 1297 at the site of the camp King Mangrai used when he supervised the building of Chiang Mai. It was the first temple to be built in Chiang Mai and contains several very old artifacts. The oldest structure is the Chang Lom chedi, which is in a style that could have originated from Sri Lanka via Sukhothai, or from Pagan. Fifteen elephants represent a sea of unformed matter upon which the cosmos of the chedi floats. Nearby are a lotus pond, a raised scripture repository and an ubosot. The stela in front of the ubosot was inscribed in 1581, and is one of the oldest known records that establishes the founding date of Chiang Mai. The temple has two Lanna style viharn. The larger viharn was renovated by Khru Ba Srivichai in the 1920's. The standing Buddha image (front right of the altar) has an inscription on its slightly lopsided square base that dates it to 1465.
