Click fraud is currently a major topic in online advertising. Many argue that it presents a threat to the stability and viability of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, the key revenue generator for both Google and Overture. In actuality, click fraud is not a significant issue at all.Click fraud occurs when ads are clicked for reasons other than a genuine interest in learning more about the product or service advertised. Click fraud occurs in two forms. In one instance, fraud arises from competitors trying to sabotage each other. One competitor clicks on the ads of another just to drain the budget of that company. The other instance occurs when webmasters (or people associated with the webmaster) repeatedly click Google AdSense ads (which are syndications of others’ ads) on their own web pa
There are plenty of examples of obvious click fraud, people setting up dubious websites with advertising then using nefarious means to get clicks on those ads, companies clicking on their competitors ads to drive up their competitors' costs. And these kind of examples of fraud are quite possibly detectable by the companies who run the ads. But there seems to be a whole other bunch of other stuff that may also be considered fraudulent, or at the very least not valid clicks. For instance, my daughter can now use Google to search for stuff on the internet but she has no idea of what the difference is between a sponsored ad and a normal search result and since she can't read everything, she just clicks on whatever she feels like. And, until she works out how to use my credit card, she won't be buying any Charlie and Lola gear from one of the sites she visits. Or what about me when I see an ad for some dubious debt company or some get rich quick scheme and I click on the link purely to
WidgetBucks has seen a tremendous growth in their network since they launched earlier October this month. And as the network grows, grow with it is click fraud. As announced by WidgetBucks, click fraud is one of their biggest concerns.
Naturally, we have systems in place to detect click-fraud to ensure that it does not impact our advertisers and, in turn, the entire network of our thousands of publishers.
When our systems flag accounts with 10%, 20%, or even 90% (one customer even had 99%) of their clicks to be potentially fraudulent, we feel it’s important to move swiftly because we take it seriously.
Going forward, as potential-click fraud is flagged within an account, we will issue an email with a three-day warning. This will allow time to dialogue with a publisher over the suspicious activity. For accounts with activity that is so egregiously fraudulent, we will suspend those publishers immediately and without warning.
WidgetBucks has already suspended an undisclosed number

Whenever someone says that want an audit, good things rarely lie ahead. Several of the nation's largest advertisers want the large internet sites to give a better accounting of their audiences and validity of users clicking on text ads. And, why not? Click fraud has been an issue on the internet for some time.
But, now companies like Kimberly-Clark and Ford want an army of auditors looking over the shoulders of the Googles and Yahoo!s of the world. If there is a finger on the scales, they want to know about it.
Of course, for old media, this is nothing new. Television audiences have been measures for decades. The Audit Bureau of Circulations has checked newspapers and magazines, and has sometimes found that publishers are cheating.
If big newspapers can do it, why can't large websites?
