The Fight for Social Security Disability
In the state of Georgia the process of obtaining benefits can be comprised of five steps, but one hopes to avoid the last four. An initial claim must be filed with the local Social Security Office. This can be done in person, over the telephone, or online. I applied online on August 1st, and after becoming very confused and frustrated, a Social Security caseworker called my home to complete the "interview process" over the telephone. She then mailed a couple of forms to be signed and witnessed, and I returned those along with my original birth certificate as requested. Weeks later I received a larger package more to the tune of a long questionnaire. I was asked how often I bathed, whether I drove my car any substantial distance, and if I had any hobbies. I had to explain how I attained gro

Long Term Disability and Wrongful Dismissal
Remember those insurance commercials featuring the "Good Hands" people. Those were the days when a cup of coffee was 50 cents, the milkman delivered and people expected to retire from the same company where they had come up from the Mail Room. But this is the 21st Century; It costs 50 cents to put air in your tires, your doctor answers by voicemail, and your chances for freedom at 65 seem about

People with Disability - A Neglected Group
Disabled people are the most neglected and the most excluded group in India. Here are a few facts from the recent World Bank Report - People with Disabilities in India :-Children with disabilities are 5 times more likely to be out of school than averageEmployment of People with Disability(PWD) among large private firms was only 0.3% of the workforce in the late 1990s. Among the multinational companies, it is far worse with only 0.05% being PWD. Do I Qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits?
Since Social Security is a government-subsidized program, the answer to this question is never simple. Basically, Social Security disability benefits are intended for those who cannot work, or at least cannot work enough to get by each month. If left to that definition, of course, many more people would be receiving Social Security disability benefits. The part that prevents some from being approved is that Social Security has what they call “the listing,” which is simply a list on paper of the medical problems that qualify and their severity. It is the government’s way of categorizing something that is very difficult to categorize. This presents two hurdles to anyone interested in receiving Social Security benefits. First, you have to present evidence that you meet the listings; or that you cannot work, or at least enough to support yourself. This evidence is usually in the form of medical records. The problem with this is that many people cannot afford t

      Disability Versus Difference?
We had an appointment with Dr. Pakula this morning. We are trying to get Demetrius' new meds calibrated (we don't think he's taking the right amount, so we are going to tweak it up to see what comes of that...) and we discussed a few other things. One thing she said kind of stuck with me, she really doesn't see autism for Demetrius being a 'disability' so much as something that just makes him 'different'. Though I like this, and it something that I can embrace...I really didn't have the time (nor did she) to press her on what she meant here... because the Good Lord Above Knows - with all the IEPs and therapies and constant struggles we have, it is certainly more like a disability than just a difference. McEwen, Christoper's Daddy, Marla..other regular readers out there...thoughts on your own kids and any observations from those of you out there that just read this blog but don't have an autistic/special needs sprite running around your house....please chime in... Oh, and

Air Travel Rules: Are They Different For Those With a Disability?
By: Pamula Bard When planning to take a trip, by way of airplane, there are a number of different factors that you should consider. One of those factors includes whether or not you have a disability. Even if you do not have a disability, you also need to be prepared if you are traveling with someone else who has one. This preparation does not just include packing your bags for your trip, but it is also includes familiarizing yourself with air travel rules. Although most of the rules are the same, you will find that some rules differ for those who have a medical condition or a disability. The first step in preparing for a trip with someone who is disabled, whether that person be yourself or another traveler, is to alert the airline. When making your reservation, you may want to inform the airline staff of any disability or medical condition that you may have. Although this is not necessary, it may be a good idea, especially if you will be traveling with medical equipment. Extra accommoda

Living With a Disability in America - and Trying to Earn a Living
Last month we began a series of reports on living with a disability in America. We started with education. Today, in Part Two, we look at employment. To go to work, you need a way to get there. Around the nation's capital, many people take subway trains to their jobs.Federal law says public transportation systems in the United States must be accessible. What does that mean? It means that trains, buses and planes must be designed for use by people with physical disabilities. In Washington's Metrorail system, for example, lights go on and off as a signal to those who cannot hear a train arriving. Raised bumps on the ground serve as a warning to those who cannot see they are close to the edge of the platform. And there are elevators in the station, so people in wheelchairs have a way to get from one level to another. But in transit systems, like anyplace else, life is not always easy. Things like broken elevators, or no elevator at all, only create more barriers for the disabled.Accessible

How to Appeal a Social Security Disability Denial
If an individual applies for Social Security disability insurance and is denied there is an appeals process they can through in order for reconsideration of their application. If an individual wishes to appeal the Social Security Administration's decision regarding their application for disability insurance they can do so, however they must make their request in writing within 60 days from the date they received Social Security's denial letter. The Social Security Administration assumes that the individual receives their letter five days after the date posted on the letter, unless an individual can show them they received it later. There are generally three or four levels of appeals; the first being reconsideration, second is a hearing by and administrative law judge, third is a review by appeals council and lastly is a federal court review. When the Social Security Administration sends an individual their letter about their decision on their claim they give them instructions on how t

      Deductibility of Disability Insurance
Bob writes: I was under the impression that disability premiums were tax deductible. But looking at irs.gov, looks like I'm wrong. Personal DI premiums are clearly listed in the can not deduct category. What if you are self-employed? Deductible then or no? What if the premiums are being paid with after-tax dollars? see if you can also get disability!
An old man went into the Social Security Office and filled out an application. He was too old to have a birth certificate, so he was asked to prove his age. He opened his shirt and showed them the gray hair on his chest. They accepted that as proof, and gave him his first check. He went home to his wife, showed her the check, and explained to her what had happened. She replied, "Well, get back down there, pull down your pants, and see if you can also get disability!"

      Disability = Sin ?
This post brought back an old memory. I was staying with a family who had been friends of my parents for some years. They were intelligent, educated people. They also happened to be Christians. Which was fine by me. One day we had a conversation, where they asked why I am deaf. I explained. Their reply was …. “Oh no, the REAL reason you’re deaf is because you sinned in a past life. You did something very VERY bad. This is your punishment.” Huh? What?! Run that one past me again? I was stunned. I have NO idea where they got this strange idea from. I certainly haven’t lived a past life. I cut that conversation short and walked away. Quickly. *shudder* Be any religion you want to be. Just leave me and my disability out of it.

Liberty : London’s Disability Rights Festival
The Liberty festival celebrates its fifth year in London’s Trafalgar Square today, celebrating deaf and disabled artists and performers. There is a review on Ouch!. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to attend it myself as I have only just found out about it. I’m fairly well informed on disability issues and am surprised to have missed this. Organised by the Mayor of London and GLAD (Greater London Action on Disability), and sponsored by Lloyds TSB, I’m disappointed not to have seen any advertising for this event. I am wondering did they even bother to advertise outside government-run media? Having a quick look at their websites - Mayor of London - there’s nothing on the front page and you have to use the search box to find the Liberty festival. Tut tut, not good enough. Greater London Action on Disability - the website isn’t even working - says it all, doesn’t it! Shame. Lloyds TSB - there’s nothing on their website about Liberty, but they d
