MSNBC tends to run poorly cited articles about the environment. I think this is exactly why some groups discount the environmental emphasis or "green movement". In a recent article on water shortages...

Some thoughts by Paul Chefurka
Introduction
One of the more contentious bun fights among environmental and ecological activists is over the role of overpopulation in the anthropogenic deterioration of the natural world. The debate coalesces loosely into two opposing camps: the overpopulation camp and the overconsumption camp.
The former insists that raw human numbers play a decisive role [...]

I don’t normally carry reviews of journals that I read on this blog, as they don’t really fit the general theme of the site. However the July/August edition of the Monthly Review magazine is simply to important to not record here.
The general theme of this journal’s edition is “Ecology, moment of truth” and in a number of articles, the editors have put together a coherent argument about
Up till the last few years, food and art were the main theme of small business transplants. However we predict that the next topic will be environmental business.Ecology level of Japan is quite high. Not to mention technology itself, based on the bitter experience of oil shock in the 1970s and industrial pollution during the rapid growth period, cultural background also plays a big role. The

Ecology is the branch of biological science concerned with the relationships and interactions between living organisms and their surroundings or environment. The term ecology was coined by combining two greek words, oikos (meaning house) and logos (meaning 'the study of ) to denote such relationships between the organisms and their environment ..... It is mainly the study relations between organis

It is the only known member of the genus Mesonychoteuthis. Though it is known from only a few specimens, current estimates put its maximum size at 12–14 metres (39–46 feet) long, based on
Defense mechanisms in Populus nigra as a response to invertebrate herbivory This project will be part of an interdisciplinary study that aims to unravel the ecology of tree-herbivore interactions with the help of biochemical and molecular techniques. We want to investigate the mechanisms of chemical defense in Populus nigra in response to damage by insect herbivores. Populus nigra produces four major groups of metabolites that appear to be involved in defense: volatile terpenoids, green leaf volatiles, phenolic glycosides, and condensed tannins. These compounds occur either constitutively in P. nigra or are induced by damaging agents such as insect herbivores. In our group we are especially interested in the inducible plant defenses and we study them both on the phenotypic as well as on th

ABU DHABI – Arab business leaders have promised to take positive action against environmental damage at a conference held here yesterday. The Arab Corporate Environmental Responsibility Summit, attended by business leaders from the region, environmentalists and United Nations experts, concluded with a declaration on corporate environmental responsibility and cleaner production.“Being aware of the magnitude of environmental challenges facing the Arab region and the world, realising that low-carbon will be the economy of the future and recognising that taking the environment fully into account is key to achieving sustainable development,” the business leaders said in the declaration and resolved to take concrete steps in preserving and conserving the environment.
I ENVIRONMENTALISTS SEE THE ASPHALTING of the country as a sin against the world of nature, but we should also see in it a kind of damage that has been done to humans, for what precedes environmental degradation is the debasement of the human world. I would go so far as to say that there is no solution for environmental destruction that isn’t first a healing of the damage that has been done to the human community. As I argued in the first part of this essay, the damage to the human world has been done through work, through our jobs, and through the world of money. We are not the creators of our own world; we merely perform functions in a system into which we were born. The most destructive aspect of our jobs is that in them we are mere “functionaries,” to borrow Josef Pieper’s term. Just as important, we have a function outside of work: consumption. Money in hand, we go into the market to buy the goods we no longer know how to make (we don’t even know how to grow and preserve
We are all aware of the many PC games we have played at a time. EASports has been known to provide good games in the form of role-playing and arcade to which has made most people stuck in the computers and playing these games individually or online.
But if there is one game that people fail to connect with the entire green movement and ecology issues we have today, there is a game which may be familiar to us that we have failed to recognize.
SimCity is a simulation role playing game that places us a mayor of certain towns. While our immediate goal is to make sure that we build and develop regions into rural or urban classes of society, there are also the qualms of having to adhere towards healthy living. As mayor, it is more than just peace and order, pollution, beautification and social interaction. There are in-game options that allow us to practice our going green beliefs.
Waste management and pollution are some of the usual problems the mayor of SimCity has to deal with. Add to
Ecology is something that we all know through education and from current events. Taken as a whole, we only know of certain components such as global warming, greenhouse gases, pollution and climate change. The world is having a hard time focusing on only one of these areas.
Add to this that such concentration has not done any good. Progress has been slow and if this keeps up, another bomb similar to that atomic bomb that destroyed Japan some centuries ago will come back in the form of an ecological disaster which we have all been talking about.
We are all doing our part. But the efforts have not been realized. Hopefully people would realize that the issue may be green but it is not a laughing matter. We just have to thrive harder to meet goals and turn things around to avoid global disaster.

Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan has urged the governments of Chongqing Municipality and Hubei Province to double efforts in treating geological disasters and protecting the ecology in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. He was speaking during a field survey on the construction, operation and management of the world's largest water conservancy project launched in 1993 involving a budget investment of 180 billion yuan (22.5 billion U.S. dollars). Claiming the project had brought benefits in flood prevention, power generation and shipping, Zeng said all enterprises participating in the project should beware of production accidents, improve production safety and produce local ecology.

A few weeks back Mr. Goh called me. He asked me if I was interested in joining him and his team for a few days out to Taiping, Kuala Sepetang and Gua Temperung caves. He had organised an ecology camp (in fact it’s more like a few days to study the ecology in this area) a group of 160 students and teachers from the Green Garden International School.
Not surprisingly then students were enthusiastic about the idea to go into the Gua Temperung cave or in mangrove swamps and the charcoal factory. It was very well organised, despite that the group had to stay in two different hotels. This was in no way a problem in organising activities. Food was excellent, we had a couple of meals in the Soon Lee Restaurant in Taiping, which turned out to be an excellent example of Chinese Malaysian food.
The mangrove forest hold quite a few secrets for the students and Mr. Chuah, owner of one of the charcoal factories was keeping the eyes of the students focused on the charcoal business which turned

A marine ecologist is sought to form part of a team investigating the ecological interactions in a coral-reef system at Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of Australia. The research project is funded by the Western Australian Marine Science Institute with the aim of better understanding the interactions among a range of habitats in coastal systems, that will lead to more effective management in these systems, particularly through the implementation of marine protected areas. The study aims to use field experiments, biomarkers such as stable isotopes, and acoustic tracking of fishes to examine linkages among habitats, and interactions among different trophic levels. The project has significant funding and existing research infrastructure through collaborations with CSIRO.If

this is what i wanted to write today… an question from the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess…
“The essence of deep ecology is to keep asking more searching questions about human life, society, and Nature as in the Western philosphical tradition of Socrates…. For example, we need to ask questions like, Why do we think that economic growth and high levels of consumption are so important? The conventional answer would be to point to the economic consequences of not having economic growth. But in deep ecology, we ask whether the present society fulfills basic human needs like love and security and access to nature and, in so doing, we question our society’s underlying assumptions. We
The issue was raised by the government as it applied to the European Union (EU) for special conservation status for three estuaries - the Severn, Dee and Humber.Joan Ruddock, biodiversity minister, said: "In submitting these sites the government has demonstrated its commitment to the protection and restoration of the UK's richly diverse, and internationally important, wildlife habitats. "We will work towards ensuring that our environmental protection agenda and our aim to develop renewable sources of power are complementary."
Forest fires in Batna that spread over 5,000 hectares over the past 20 days have caused an ecological catastrophe in the region, El Khabar reported on Wednesday (August 8th). Thousands of rare plants and trees in the forests of Bni Fdala and Larbaa Municipalities, 20 of which could be found only in Algeria and Morocco, were destroyed. Many rare birds and animal species died, the paper quoted the local forest department as saying.
Indian-born Kumar, who visited Sydney recently to promote his ideas, has devoted his life to investigating links between ecology and spirituality, literally walking the talk. At the age of nine he became a child monk, going barefoot, begging for food and wearing a cloth over his mouth to avoid inadvertently killing an insect. Then, in 1962, he became inspired and outraged by the incarceration of the English philosopher and peace campaigner Bertrand Russell and decided to walk to the four nuclear capitals of the world. Over 18 months, he trekked to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington in a protest against nuclear arms.

The Ecology Action Center, which monitors recycling for McLean County, Bloomington and Normal governments, estimates that 33 percent of materials that could be thrown away is diverted from the trash through recycling, reuse and composting. That's 76,000 tons of stuff that didn't hit the landfill in 2006 alone.
USA TODAY - Like a junior and kid-friendly An Inconvenient Truth, it makes the threat of global warming more real by weaving that message into a pair of absorbing narratives. Queen Latifah provides a friendly and gently funny narration for the two tales of the challenges faced by a mother walrus and her pup and a polar bear and her two cubs in the Arctic.
Over 200 million EUR from the EU funds will be granted for the construction of rectifying station and improving the quality of waters. This was announced today by the Minister of Environment and Waters Djevdet Chakurov. He explained that by the end of the year a part of the contracts on the Environment Program have to be concluded.
The bust of one of science's most respected ecologists stands at the entrance to what is the country's first university-level school of ecology with a ready reminder: The ecosystem is greater than the sum of its parts. The quote and the bust honor Eugene Odum, the legendary University of Georgia ecologist and namesake of the school, which officially opened last month. And now the late scientist's favorite mantra is being put to the test.
BEIJING, July 16 (UPI) -- China, which has controlled Tibet since the 1950s, said Monday it will spend $2.63 billion over 20 years on several projects to protect the region's ecosystem. The projects will include construction of nature reserves, protection of natural forests, restoration of grassland and pastures and prevention of desertification, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

When one thinks of a golf course, it often conjures the image of a benign oasis. However, over the years, there's been a greater consciousness of golf's impact to the environment. Specifically, it's impact on water resources, species biodiversity, and the use of pesticides. After doing a little research, I was encouraged to see that there has been a shift to the use of reclaimed water and, depending on the habitat the course is replacing, occasionally an increase in biodiversity. However, all courses are not made the same and their impact is highly dependant on how they're managed. The following video on R&A's website, called The Open Road to Sustainability, recounts efforts to maintain the sustainability of the Royal Liverpool Golf Course. However, R&A is golf's world rules and development body and organizer of The Open Championship, so take it for what it's worth.
I ran across this screed at Common Dreams and thought it very instructive of what a bunch of crybaby cock suckers the left really is. This fucking idiot is whining about President Bush having an ecologically friendly home. Yes, you heard me right. He is complaining because the President went miles out of his way to make sure his house wastes no energy nor water. This is the perfect example of how you can never ever make the moonbatty left happy and no matter what George Bush does the liberals will still complain bitterly. Go ahead and read what that crybaby is whining about. If the President had a house like AlGores mansion they would be complaining just as much or more.
