In a sign that the retail industry is one of the industries being hit hardest by economic conditions, J.C. Penney has slashed its first quarter guidance. The company now only expects to report earnings of 50 cents per share significantly lower then its previous estimate of 75 cents a share. J.C. Penny stated that although the tax rebates may help a little; they expect lackluster sales throughout 2008.
Everyone who has given an estimate for a task knows that they are giving the estimate based on everything happening "normally". Normal means that there are no unplanned or unknown difficulties that arise. If one expects to be able to make a plan that takes into account all of these unplanned or unknown difficulties then it is impossible at the beginning or during the project to make an estimate that is accurate. This is possible only after the project is over and that is too late. So what does one do when faced with a situation such as this and needs to give an estimate with a reasonable level of accuracy. The most important thing is to make a plan. Any plan. So when you start off the project you make the best possible plan that you can at that point of time. Once you make that plan ask you

Juniper Research has estimated that over 2.6 billion mobile tickets will be delivered to just over 208 million mobile phone users by 2011. Juniper found clear evidence that the sector is gearing up for major launches over the next few years. Early trials, mainly led by mobile network operators, are now migrating into commercial services that are controlled by the ticketing issuers themselves. Benefits for the ticketing issuers include reduced cost, better security to help the fight against fraud and improved environmental footprint by reducing paper. Early use of mobile barcode technology will be gradually complimented by the emergence of NFC (Near Field Communications), in particular for the transportation ticketing sector where there are already commercial deployments in the Far E

A great article on newteevee.com, they stated that Forrester has the most bullish estimate yet for online video advertising spending in the U.S.: $7.1 billion by 2012. That's after a 72 percent compound annual growth rate for the next five years, building on total spending of $471 million this year.
That tops eMarketer's July estimate that online video advertising would be worth $4.3 billion in 2011 — by Forrester's growth curve (see chart above), revenues would already have already passed the $5 billion mark by then. Another contrast: eMarketer's estimate depended on monster growth early on — an 89 percent growth rate to $775 million in 2007 — followed by

Even though you can not estimate exactly, but you can estimate the execution time efforts depending on the Function Points in your Test Cases. You will have to categorize your test cases in 3 different categories e.g. Critical / Major / Minor and then can check timing for 5 test cases from each group. Take average of that and multiply with number of test cases in respective groups. This will not give you exact estimate, but it will definitely give estimate near to actual time.I have tried this in my past projects and could successfully delviered my product within given time frame.I will also recommend to add 10 to 15 % extra time, so that if you get stuck some where or considering some obstacles in testing, you can deliver product within your estimated time.

China’s trade surplus is a frequently quoted figure, but it is only one of the fast-moving economic indicators coming out of China. The latest batch of stats shows no sign of a slow down. The following reports come from Forbes, and are from a source at the National Development and Reform Commission (“NDRC”):
• GDP: Projected at 11.5% for 2007 and 11% in 2008 (well ahead of government and private sector estimates made in April)
• Inflation (CPI): Projected at 4.3% for 2007 and 3.5% in 2008 (The National Bureau of Statistics predicts 4.5% for 2007, and the People’s Bank of China 4.6%, according to another report)
• Industrial value-added output: Projected at 18% for 2007
• Urban fixed-asset investment: Projected at 29% for 2007, and 25% in 2008
• Retail sales: Projected at 16.2% in 2007, and 16.5% in 2008
• Exports: Projected at 24.3% in 2007, with slower growth in 2008.
• Trade surplus: Projected to hit US$257 billion in 2007, and US$308.4 billion in 2008.

Q4 Earnings for 2007 could not have been better. Estimates came in at around $0.82 per share. The reported results were at $1.01 per share. The 19 cent difference per share sent shares flying up about $10 per share in after hours.
We couldn’t have expected better from the guys in California. Apple (AAPL) has outdone themselves and shares are gaining steam to the milestone of $200 per share. It’s always hard to recommend buying shares after a large pop in the stock, but the evidence seems to be quite clear that Apple will be quickly moving to that $200 price point.
On a side note, the recent article in the New York Times discussing the interview with Steve Jobs is highly enlightening and should continue to send shares higher. Apple plans to update and produce continually new products over the next 10 years or so, and should have a powerful effect on AAPL.
What remains to be seen is how these results compare to those of its peers over the next few days. Both Burlington Northern (BNI) and Norfolk Southern (NSC) report next week.

Home buyers who obtain a mortgage have to pay "closing costs". Closing costs is the general term used to describe the various fees and expenses paid in order to obtain a mortgage. As a general rule of thumb, closing costs are between 2 and 3 percent of the gross purchase price. In order to see a break down of closing costs, you need to get a "Good Faith Estimate" (GFE) from the lender(s) you're working with or comparison shopping. A GFE shows all the closing costs line by line. It also shows you your estimated total monthly payment.
Here's a sample Good Faith Estimate (click on picture to enlarge):
Note: If a lender drags their feet or gives you a hard time about providing you with a GFE, do not work with that lender.
Once you get the GFE, ask your lender to go over it with you in detail. You may also want to go over the GFE with your real estate agent to make sure you didn't miss something and that the lender didn't hide any fees.

Refilling and Remanufacturing Printer Cartridges Locally Reduces Global Transportation Requirements
EMERYVILLE, CA. – Cartridge World, the World’s largest printer cartridge refiller and remanufacturer, has announced that its customers will help avoid 1 million pounds of carbon emissions annually by reusing its printer cartridges instead of buying new. This is the equivalent of taking almost 100 passenger cars off the road for one year and recycling 150 tons of waste instead of depositing it in a landfill.
The study, performed by Brown & Wilmanns Environmental, LLC, estimates the transport-related carbon dioxide emissions of transporting original equipment manufacturer (OEM) cartridges from overseas production facilities to U.S. retailers versus refilling or remanufacturing those cartridges locally at a Cartridge World store.

Apple (AAPL) is up $3.77 today on an upgrade from Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. He believes the combination of the iPod’s future development and the iPhone has tremendous potential (quite possibly the most obvious statement on the street). Ultimately, Gene suggested that Apple’s price target should be raised to $205 per share, one of the highest on the street.
Also, there’s an interesting number that hit the street a couple of days ago. IDC released market share numbers for the top worldwide computer brands.
“Apple’s 2nd Quarter 2007 U.S. market share was up to 5.6% of U.S. shipments. This tied Apple in 3rd place with Gateway for U.S. market share for this quarter. Dell and HP were well ahead at 28.4% and 23.6% respectively. Apple did not rank in the top 5 vendors for worldwide sales. The 5.6% U.S. market share represents an increase from 4.8% in the year-ago (2006) quarter, which was an increase from 4.4% in the Q2 2005 quarter. ” (SOURCE)

Let's say you buy in to having a flash report or "soft close†on your financial numbers within a day or two after month end for your company.
Then you have the challenge - getting your accounting department to buy into the idea.
What accounting will fear is having a significant gap between the soft close and the final numbers.
Creating estimates goes against their normal mentality. They take pride in getting the numbers right. Precision rules. Estimates can feel fuzzy. Judgment calls have to be made. This brings in ambiguity they might not be able to tolerate.
The key is to lower the stress level and give them permission to be off on the estimates. Let them know that you understand that these are estimates and not precise numbers. You don't expect them to nail these numbers right off the bat.
Tell them you are looking for numbers in the ballpark, not precise numbers for the estimates.

Although revenue declined, inventories rose 5.1%, in keeping with our thesis that there is too much capacity. Furthermore, property, plant and equipment (a proxy for manufacturing capacity) rose 7.9%, in keeping with our theory that the inventory situation is going to get worse.
