From the American Journal of Sports Medicine, a recent article reports on the post operative results for UCL injuries of the elbow in female athletes. Argo, Trenhaile, Savoie, & Field looked at 19 females who underwent a surgical procedure for ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) insufficiency. From the literature (which I have seen), this is the first study of its kind to document its findings specifically in females. UCL injuries are most common in overhead athletes, with baseball being the most frequently cited. The subjects in this study participated in a variety of sports including softball (42%), gymnastics, and tennis. All subjects all failed conservative management and had symptoms of medial elbow instability for greater than 3 months. Following surgery, active range of motion was started after 1 week and strengthening exercises for the scapula, rotator cuff, wrist, and forearm were started at 3 to 4weeks.
