OK, I feel sort of weird for doing a quick review of this book immediately following the quick review of his second edition of Hawai'i's Fishes, but appears "there's a new sheriff in town" when it comes to books covering Hawaiian reef fish. I'd heard about this book and found a copy of it last night, turns out Amazon has it in stock so it's readily available. This book is a step up from the other
I've mentioned in the past that the first edition of this book was terrific. Last year, John Hoover left a comment on this post that he'd put out a new edition. I had to run down to Costco to pick up a copy, but Amazon did not have it available so I never reviewed it. I haven't looked in quite some time, but it's definitely available outside of Hawaii nowadays. This is it:This is an upgrade from
The hadal snailfish, a deep-sea specialist, has been captured on camera feeding on bait almost 5 miles below the ocean’s surface. This is the first time this species has been observed living, and it is only known from a handful of specimens trawled up over 50 years before. These fish must sustain immense pressure, [...]
Still buying the scripted party line that Democrats are the party of equality? Obama obviously know no bounds when it comes to the exploitation of and the discrimination against gender and race.Since Obama has arrived on the presidential "wanna-be" scene, he has consistently played the race card to defend himself against attacks-thus exploiting the cause of legitimate victims of racism. After
Fish Vocalisations are very old indeedAmerican scientists have localised the part of a fishes brain that proceses vocalisations, or 'noises', if you prefer. I always enjoy reading stories like this, where you just say to yourself 'how long has that been going on?' and more importantly, 'why are they doing that?'. I'm not an ichthyologist, but I do find this fascinating. Although there are a few ex
Rushing across a temple parking lot, British angler Rick Humphreys yells, "We've got a fish."
He jumps into a small motorboat on the Maeklong River in time to see Wirat Moungnum bring the prize to the surface _ a rare, giant freshwater stingray that weighs as much as 44 pounds.
It bursts through the murky water exposing a soft, white underbelly the size of a trash can lid. The crew scrambles to.
Whale Shark. Images by wjwinoz
I saw some pretty cool things the last two days: sea snakes, sand sharks, humpback whales, and the grand whale shark.
On Tuesday I did a dive on the navy pier. The pier is supposed to be one of the “Top 10 dives in the world”, a title which probably 100 [...]
Dive into the deep ocean, swim with fishes and capture all the beautiful coral scenes. A great relaxing design for nature lovers!
It has been a while I didn’t publish new design for T-shirt Du Jour. That doesn’t mean I am not working at all, actually I am creating a lot of new doodle designs [...]

When seas get hot, fish get lost - March 07, 2008Researchers examining Australian damselfish have found small fry with asymmetrical ear bones are less likely to make it back to their reef homes after a stint out at sea (research paper, press release). This could be because fish at sea listen for the sounds of home in order to navigate (see the BBC coverage for more on this angle).Stress factors such as temperature and acidity will probably increase the number of fish with funny ears, they say. Increased acidity reduces the amount of calcium around for making ear bones, and having to regulate internal pH against changing water pH will also have a negative impact (Reuters, New Scientist). As warmer and more acidic oceans are likely to result from global warming, more fish are going to be swim
Taste, if you can survive it and are not on a save the species diet, fish could be a fabulous way to attack the fat.Rich in omega-3 and a natural source, fish are fantastic. Don't be scared! Oil ridden these critters might be, but fattening they are not. Unless scrambling your brain, and eating fried Catfish, Sablefish, Pompano or Atlantic Mackerel, is common practise for you, the fatty fish myth would be real. Saturated in vitamins, these will help maintain a balanced diet.Protein packed, muscle building will be made easy. Needless to say what that will do, I'll say it anyway. Fat will be burnt and your metabolism will be raised. Research on protein has found that it aids in the consumption of fat in the liver and creates a "thermic" effect increasing metabolism.Far from chocolate cake, b
I’m not very good at sharing private news. It doesn’t come naturally to me to tell everyone and anyone my personal business… yes I write a blog, but I rarely delve into personal and private information. It’s all cream off the top. Fluff from a fluffy life.Part of my resolutions for 2008 was to be honest with myself and in doing that I have decided to be completely honest with you, my friends, family and strangers alike. So… here goes nothing! At the conclusion of 2007 I found myself looking back at life and asking myself one important question “If I died tomorrow, what would be my greatest regret?”The answer to that is that I am childless.Whether by decision or design, or any combination of the two, I am not a mother.I will be 33 this year and my biological clock as ceased quiet
Big game fishermen generally target large bony fish such as the tuna and marlin. Sometimes it is good to get out of your home and take a twelve pack and some friends and just go party on a boat with some big game fishing. The appeal of any type of game fishing is catching the fish. You have to work really hard to catch a prize tuna or marlin to have stuffed and place on your wall at home or in your restaurant. Big game fishing is a sport that takes a lot of strength and endurance. If you don not possess these attributes and have any lack of patience, then big game fishing is not for you. The average cost in UD currency is typically 20,000 on the tackle alone. You have to charter a boat unless you already own one and this is no easy matter unless you have a friend who is a captain and knows how to steer while trying to catch a big game fish. You must be pretty rich to pull off doing this sort of activity on a regular basis. The biggest bony fish is the ocean sunfish weighing up to over 5

Have you ever heard of The Feast of Seven Fishes comic? I hadn't either until now. It's a comic book that is part comic and part cookbook. Intriguing combination. I've got a copy now (Thanks, Christina!) and just started reading it.A little salty, a little racy, the Feast of the Seven Fishes is always honest. From the moment it debuted in September of 2004, the online comic strip developed a loyal audience who rabidly followed the romantic and culinary adventures of an Italian-American family preparing for and celebrating the traditional Christmas Eve seafood feast.Well, the Feast of Seven Fishes crew is on tour this week and will be stopping in Boston on 12/14 at the Boston Beanstock Coffee Co (10 High St. Boston) from 4pm - 8pm. In honor of this, I'm giving away a free copy of the book to one lucky reader. It's been a while since I've given something away - so I figure it's about time.If you'd like a chance to win a free copy of The Feast of Seven Fishes, subscribe to
20.10.07 - By Mike Cassell: It is very easy not to like Welterweight phenomenon Floyd Mayweather Jr. 38 0, 24 KOs. He plays a spectacular bad guy, even when he is, dancing with the stars. He can be unapologetic, brazen, cocky, but more importantly, he can outbox pretty much any fighter on the planet, which makes all that other stuff mute. There has always been plenty of fighters who loved to talk, but very few that could walk the walk. Floyd Mayweather Jr. can make a full grown more…
If you have been anxious about how to carry with you the liveliest part of your home, heave a sigh of relief. Where you have the will, we show the way.
The fascinating creatures of water flaunting myriad colors and forms are sometimes the gentlest companions to have. They had perhaps attracted your fancy simply by their agile movements or possibly by their varied behavior pattern. Apart from f
There is something about colours. Colours can stimulate, excite and bring cheer. They can also do otherwise too. This is probably why keeping a fish tank of tropical fishes can bring tranquility to the spirit and mind. Watching those swimming creatures has indeed proven to bring relaxation, which explains why acrylic aquariums are becoming popular in offices and commercial spaces. Everyone of us need some form of relaxation, whether it’s physical or mental. Keeping fish tanks in offices can improve the moods of staff, adding more life to the atmosphere. Similarly, I have seen fish tanks in medical centres or doctor’s offices and I believe they must be there for good reasons. These days, aquarium suppliess and fish tanks are readily available online. It is so easy to choose an aquarium of your choice and have it delivered to you.
Whenever there is colour, you find happy people. Maybe that’s why colourful fishes can be a therapeutic sight.
This is so cool! This dude is giving commands to the fish!!

This post completes the details of our trip. (See part 1, part 2)We left Mokpo and drove to nearby Wolchulsan National Park. We stayed at the hotel there at the Dogapsa ticket booth entrance. We enjoyed a quiet walk in the park the next day before heading off to go to the nearby Yongam pottery centre. We found the kiln and a gift shop in the very pretty village of Gurim, but inspite of the shop keeper's attempt at giving us directions, we were unable to find the pottery centre. The village must be one of the most attractive we've seen in Korea, with a small area of traditional houses and stone bridges over the stream. We headed south to another pottery centre at Gangjin. This was much easier to find as it was marked on our map! The site includes another wood burning kiln, many shops and a musuem housed in two large buildings. The first has very little English explanations of the potshards displayed, the second had a tiny exhibition of around thirty bits and pieces from the Limoges regi

"Best Fishes - Have a Ball!" When you're obsessed with creating every ocassion is anexcuse to create something. This week two dear friendscelebrated their birthday. This little painting was forone of those cards. Here are some thoughts on creative obsession: "The creative habit is like a drug. The particular obsession changes, but the excitement, the thrill of your creation lasts." (Henry Moore) "The object of an artist's obsession can open up doors to their soul that might otherwise remain shut tight. " (Vince Aletti) "It's the addicts that stay with it. They're not necessarily the most talented, they're just the ones that can't get it out of their systems." (Harold Brown) "These landscapes of water and reflections have become an obsession. It's quite beyond my powers at my age, and yet I want to succeed in expressing what I feel." (Claude Monet)
This was my first read of 2007, and I enjoyed it so much! I've always enjoyed an interesting personal non-fiction account, be it an adventure story, like Into Thin Air, or a travel memoir, or a biography about an interesting person, because I am able to learn about a culture or occupation or hobby without opening a history book, or a newspaper, or a periodical. In this book I learned a good
