I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Some may argue that the Mercury contained in them poses a significant environmental issue, however, with proper education people will realize that they need to be disposed of properly. Mercury is bad for you. You shouldn't touch it. If you breathe it in, that's even worse. So it's surprising that it's used in the new energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. They're brighter and last longer than ordinary light bulbs, but the mercury means they're also potentially more harmful. It seems like this is evidence of a growing "half-measure" trend in the fight to combat energy inefficiency.There are a lot of steps we've been taking as a society to clean up our act, environmentally speaking. These include moving from gas-powered vehicles to gas-electric hybrids, gas-electric-hydrogen tribrids, and cars that run on ethanol. Many of these measures have faults of their own. We place so much emphasis on doing clean, environmentally-friendly work, and as of yet there is still no clear-cut technology that is pure and widely available. To save energy, we risk our own safety with things like mercury-infused light bulbs. Oh well. I guess we're just taking baby step

Many CFLs can fit in the existing incandescent light fixtures."An interesting article I read today mentioned the following facts:1. CFL's take up to 70%-80% less electricity compared to incandescent lamps.2. CFL's living span is up to 6 to 10 times that of an incandescent lamp.3. 11w of CFL power is equal to 60w of incandescent lamp power.4. Changing 10 lamps to CFL's will result in a yearly saving of up to 150$.5. Most of the power in an incandescent lamp is wasted on heat not light.6. California will soon ban the use of incandescent lamps. In Europe a similar law is currently drafted and in Australia the use of these lamps will be banned by 2010.A classic win win situation in my opinion.
It uses a normal 120 to 6V stepdown transformer in reverse to step 12V to about 350V to drive a lamp without the need to warm the filaments.
Q1 must be installed on a heat sink. A 240V to 10V transformer will work better then the one in the parts list. The problem is that they are hard to find. This circuit can give a nasty (but not too dangerous) shock. Be careful around the output leads.

Truth be told, standard fluorescent lighting may well be functional but, from an aesthetic perspective, it has been passé for years. But that could be about to change thanks to designer Ross Lovegrove’s System X lighting units.
System X comprises of a series of 12 watt X shaped fluorescent lighting modules which can be either ceiling or wall mounted and that can be used independently or linked together to form arrays that can be dimmed via a central control unit to produce differing zones of luminescence according to requirements.
