This weekend was perfect except of course for all the snow, the bad roads, our snow blower breaking down and Hailey running a fever. (ok maybe it was not so perfect) No really it was, I got all my presents wrapped, caught up on all my laundry, and baked a few cookies with the kids. I got to take my Sunday afternoon nap, life is good for the moment anyway. We baked some cookies with the kids

If you are studying early American history, it’s fun to incorporate the foods our ancestors used to enjoy. Molasses was a special treat for the colonists, because of the shortened supply of processed sugar. Many of their foods were sweetened by molasses, and a real treat was spreading it on their homemade bread for breakfast [...]
one of my talents definitely isn't making a proper gingerbread house. for one reason or another mine always seem to collapse. but this year i have a new found hope... a couple of weeks ago i received personal gingerbread house making lessons from none other than disneyland's executive head pastry chef, chef jean-marc viallet. okay, so they weren't exactly one-on-one lessons, but it was a very inti

Yesterday afternoon T. and I snuck in a quick trip to the grocery store before we picked L. up from school. During final exams week, our house not only falls into a state of messiness and clutter (who can clean when you're knee-deep in grading?), but we tend to run out of necessities like food. While we were trying to find some bakery bread for L.'s lunch, T. spied a gingerbread house making kit.
We spent this cold, snowy, December Saturday morning at a Christmas party, making Gingerbread Houses with all of our friends! Santa Claus also showed up to the party. Asher's response was to say he was a "little bit scared" and since then has been asking "why that man?" and "why red?" and "why 'Ho-ho'?" Also: before the party we did a "Little Buddies" tour of the hospital (toddlers get to vi

Let's just put it this way, I have a problem with candy. It may be July but there are a lot of people already gearing up for their part in the National Gingerbread House Competition. Thanks Darwin Bell For Use of his Photo.I found this recipe in The Sweet Melissa Baking Book, Which I will review in a future post. This recipe sounds so good. I love ginger and cardamom. And maple butter is one of those taste memories from childhood- my grade school would have waffle days, and they would serve these waffles made from scratch, big pale yellow round ones the size of a plate. The waffles were barely browned - so that they were soft and warm and not crusty on the outside. And on the top they would serve a scoop of fluffy maple butter, so when you spread it onto the waffle, the maple butter would sink into the individual spaces in the grid, exploding into your mouth at each bite....yumm! People say that there's always a first time to everything, and though you pretty much govern whether you want to do something or not, there are times when you just get carried away by the flow and end up trying something you might have had some reservations about. One such thing that happened to me after coming to US was tasting different coffee flavors, and I must say, it was the best thing ever! I love flavored lattes, hazelnut and tiramisu being my all-time favorites. But this holiday season, my friend at work made me taste the traditional gingerbread latte. She took me to Starbucks and paid for my coffee just so I would get to know and taste the wild and spicy flavor that is zipped up in this one amazing drink! This seasonal favorite will surely make you feel warm and cozy, and ignite fond memories of the gingerbread man and the spirit of christmas!Gingerbread has its roots in Europe, mainly Germany. In Medieval England gingerbread simply meant "preserved ginger", and was traditio

Happy Holidays!
A co-worker came in today with an armload of Christmas Goodies that his kids made for us last night. While searching for the best cookie to take back to her desk another co-worker came across this beautiful Gingerbread Man, lovingly crafted by one of the children. I just had to take a snapshot of this priceless work of art and share it with all of you.
Merry Christmas!
Tonight we went as usual to the girls Missionettes Meeting, and had to take a picture of her craft/cookie before she destroys it or eat it in this case, you see every time we get back this always happens....the craft disappears. My kid doesnt have any concept of be gentle.

CB I Hate aroma has launched a new fragrance, combustion From welkin, and a new holiday version of Gingerbread.
combustion From welkin is from the CB Archetypes succession, and was inspired on the Mary Renault novel of the same name (the first convolution of her trilogy about Alexander the Great):
This is the third scent in my succession of original smells.
Smoke represents perhaps the most grave aspect of aroma – its commencement. Even its modern name is derived from an ancient term that instrument “to smoke through”.

Rocks In My Dryer is doing a backwards Works For Me Wednesday today. Instead of sharing a tip or suggestion we are supposed to be asking a question that we need an answer to.
I’ve got a question that I hope someone can answer. How do I make gingerbread?
I know, seems simple enough. I keep planning to make some, and planning to make some, and planning to make some. But never do. What I need is a good recipe. ONe that is simple, yummy, and won’t make me go broke buying the ingredients. I am sure I could find one online, but when I saw that this was a backwards day I knew I had to ask instead.
So hit me with your best gingerbread recipes!

I figure I’d better post these pictures before Halloween is over! The kids and I made this gingerbread house a couple of weeks ago. It was mostly THEM and not me - I just held the walls up while the icing hardened, and they took it from there. I think it came out pretty cute, considering how LITTLE candy came with it! The box listed all the different candies and things lurking within, and only about HALF of the stuff listed was actually in the box. We had to break out some old Halloween stuff - vampire teeth, spider rings, etc. to finish decorating it. I’m happy with how it turned out! And the kids had a blast with it.

Ah, time for Christmas cookies! For years and years when my kids were young we made gingerbread men from scratch each Christmas. At first when they were very little they just globbed on the icing and candy decorations LOL but as they got older their creations became beautiful and elaborate. One year we even made an entire gingerbread nativity scene complete with gingerbread sheep, camels and donkeys! These little guys are store bought and while not quite as special as our homemade ones they still bring a smile to my face as I think back on all the Christmasses gone by when an army of gingerbread men descended on my kitchen every December.

This afternoon my coworkers exchanged a few more Christmas gifts. Julie, an avid yoga enthusiast, handed out gingerbread men in a variety of yoga positions. Our sales manager looked at my cookie and then paused when she saw the cookie of one of the sales associates."You know," she said, "Your cookie and his cookie should be together."So we tested her theory. Our founder and former CEO would certainly not approve of these highly inappropriate photos of sugar, flour and water.Disclaimer: This photo is not necessarily indicative of the type of people with whom I work in advertising sales. Though as I snapped this phone photo op, I said to our sales manager, "So when people ask me what I did at work today ...""Yes," she said. "These are the people you work with."
