Great Expectations - The Karate Kid
Summary of The Karate Kid:
John G. Avildsen not only directed Rocky, he tried remaking it over the years in a dozen different ways. One of them was this popular 1984 drama about a new kid (Ralph Macchio) in town targeted by karate-wielding bullies until he gets a new mentor: the [...]
All eyes are on Saturday. There are huge expectations of major fiscal measures to come in and this in turn is expected to give a major boost to the economy. But then, there are expectations. In reality, though it is good that the Govt is working towards making the Indian economy resilient, and is trying to infuse liquidity back into the system, the fact of the matter is that at this point of time
President-elect Obama has a high standard to uphold now and expectations are even higher. The question is will he be able to stand up to it.
In a couple of days the win will be over and it is a...

This is one of Jack Nicholson’s most underrated performances and director Tony Richardson’s most overlooked films. Nicholson is a member of the U.S. Border Patrol who moves with his materialistic wife (Valerie Perrine) to a small Texas town. There, his new colleagues try to pull him into the web of corruption that runs through the [...]

You have to love this opening sentence:Not since Dan Quayle took the stage in 1988 have debate expectations for a major party candidate been as low as they will be on Thursday for Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.I predict that Sarah Palin will do better than expected.
The expectations have been set so low that they will be almost impossible to meet. But as the article goes on to say, maybe the expect
I would challenge anyone to announce “I have no expectations.” There may be a few Zen Masters who proclaim freedom from such things but most of us although we deny it carry an expectation or two in our pockets.
I had the opportunity recently to travel back to my native land after an absence of five [...]

I found our dog in the garage with mousetraps stuck to her front paws. She was frantically hopping, trying to extricate herself from the adhesive. I phoned my husband and said that instead of mice, we had caught a Labrador retriever. At that moment might have been happier with a dead mouse. Fresh off the high of having her paws encased in super glue, Nutmeg stole and ate an en

Jeff had a day off today, so we did what any hot-blooded American couple would do for quality time: We went to Wal-Mart. I realize that grocery shopping is rapidly becoming the number one date night for suburban couples, but at nine a.m. on a Monday our fellow shoppers consisted mostly of mothers with preschoolers. This made for an interesting shopping experience with said husband, because I kept running into people I know. My beloved is not typically known for his patience. But today was quite enlightening. He actually seemed to enjoy sauntering along, not looking for anything in particular. He held back as I chatted with friends, gazing on with a slightly bemused smile on his face. As I cooed to baby friends and conversed with little girls on banana telephones, he quietly occup

I don’t have expectations. Expectations in your life just lead to giant disappointments.Michael Landon
I am struggling with something right now because I had expectations. And I was let down.
When I have expectations about a person, place or situation, it almost always will fall short of my standards or what I imagined it to be. It is alright to have a goal and work towards it. It is alright to have principles of personal integrity. However, it is not alright for me to live with expectations.
Here are some definitions of expectation(s):
(1) Prospects, especially of success of gain(2) eager anticipation(3) belief (mental picture) of the future(4) the feeling that something is about to happen
All of those definitions point to the fact that I believe I have control. I believe I can can call the shots in my life.
I am powerless over the players in this game of life. I can’t set expectations because I will always want them to play out in my favor
It seems that the old adage of medical student ‘glamour’ is true. The adage that is, not the reality. Recently I have found myself coming under relentless questioning from eager friends and family for the nitty gritty details that make up the first month of medical school. The reality of course, is there are very few, if any.Take for example the recent phone call I had with my mother:“So have you been in any hospitals yet?”“No”“What about GP practices?”“No”“Met any patients?”“No”“Seen anything interesting??”“No”“Had any tests or work back?”“No”…“So…what did you do today?”“I watched a video on pregnancy”“Oooh that sounds exciting! What was it about?!”"Pregnancy.""Yes I mean, what happened in it?"“We’ve seen it before on BBC, you know the Robert Winston one”“Ah”I got asked by my friends probing questions into the life of clinical medicine the other night. It was quite fun to burst their balloon and tell them all I’ve
I have my first ultrasound tomorrow and it’s all I can think about. My family and I have been discussing what we hope and expect to see tomorrow. We have narrowed it down to the following possiblities:
1. A baby.
2. Two babies.
3. Something with a tail, horns and a pitchfork.
I’ll let you all know how it turns out.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS by Charles Dickens
The classic tale of Pip, a poor orphan who befriends an escaped convict and who grows up in the company of a bitter old woman, Miss Havisham, and her haughty young ward, Estella. Pip learns the rewards of both vindictiveness and gratitude as a result of these events.

A few days ago, I visited New Orleans and attended a program dedicated to the courageous spirit of the people of the city. The function was the brainchild of Ashish Verma, the General Manager of the renowned Windsor Court Hotel. As part of the program, Mr. Verma invited my spiritual teacher, Sri Chinmoy, to say some encouraging words and give a short concert.
Also, a couple of New Orleaneans were honored for their outstanding efforts to help rebuild the city. I was so inspired that I decided to attempt a Guinness record the next morning at a local track even though I wasn’t completely trained.
Each time that I read Great Expectations I'm left wondering whether or not Pip would have been happier if he had never been made the gift of "great expectations." More importantly, would he have been a better man if he had remained apprenticed to his blacksmith brother-in-law Joe rather than having been sent to London to be trained in the ways of a gentleman?Great Expectations is a Dickens cautionary tale in which the author warns his readers of what can so easily happen to a person when given the opportunity to "better himself" by leaving his home, family and friends behind for education and fortune-seeking in the big city. As soon as word reached the local townspeople around whom Pip had spent his early years that a fortune was soon to be his, Pip found himself treated with respect and awe by the very people who had had little time for him in the past other than to chastise his behavior and relationship with the sister who was raising him "by hand." Their "boy" became "sir" overn
I was saving this video for tomorrow's edition of the Mother's Day Series. However, due to this morning's dicussion that occured in our home sweet home, I am posting this for myself. Those moms who can relate say "I". To dads who read this blog (maybe about 4 of you, maybe it's a good idea to help with house chores on Mother's Day. If you're doing that already..maybe add a little extra?). Thank you Tayra and Lessons from The Scrapbook Page for this video:
AllHipHop.com: What bothers you more walking down the street – when people ask you where Will Smith is or when people try to do the handshake with you?
DJ Jazzy Jeff: [Laughs] Probably the handshake. I don’t get mad at the Will questions. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince started all of this. There would be no Men in Black, Independence Day, Made in America, Ali, there would be no Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, no Floetry, no A Touch of Jazz – none of this, if it wasn’t for DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. I have to have enough respect to know that I have to answer whatever question comes from that ‘cause that is the origin of all of this stuff. Article continued after the jump. (more…)
After some mild salary negotiations over the past two days, I formally accepted the position assisting the VP Internet advertising sales and the AVP director of marketing. One is widely acclaimed and respected in the online advertising world and the latter was named one of the top 25 women to watch in Advertising Age.I didn't get exactly what I wanted in terms of salary, but my employers did make a decent effort to meet me halfway, which ended up being a difference of $5k. Plus, I will receive paid overtime, which will actually put me over my asking price. It's a great salary by North Carolina standards, a good salary by Florida standards and a decent salary by New York City standards. In other words, I'm not moving to Tribeca and buying a Rolex watch tomorrow, but I can afford to live comfortably, save adequately and have a social life (which is very expensive here). On Monday, I will officially be a permanent employee of the company for which I have been temping for three full mont
