my moment of plastic panic came a few months ago. As a science writer, I've spent the past several years following the steady stream of research into the disturbing effects of the chemicals that leach into our bodies from everyday plastic objects. I'd managed to stay pretty calm about these unsettling discoveries, but then I went to yet another presentation where renowned scientists described new, peer-reviewed findings on how plastic's ingredients may cause reproductive abnormalities and obesity. Afterward, I huddled with the other journalists present, brimming with uneasy questions: Does this mean we should ditch our refillable plastic water bottles? The goals of the workshop were to increase understanding of the solar and space physics in the environment of Earth, the Moon, and Mars; to identify compelling relevant research goals; and discuss directions this research should take over the coming decade. This workshop report presents a discussion of radiation risks for the VSE, an assessment of specifying and predicting the

Exposure to the Hazards of Combat
From what I’ve read about Army Reservist Sergeant Erik Botta, I probably would not be on the same side of the fence politically. Just an assumption. However, I would think that at least most would agree, left or right or straddling said fence, that it is just wrong that the government would actually use the statement “to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat” to justify his fifth deployment. The 26-year old has been to Afghanistan once, and to Iraq three times, and was then granted an exemption by the government, after his service, to pursue an engineering degree to work as a senior engineer on Blackhawk and Seahawk helicopters. Exemption then denied. I guess he simply hasn’t been exposed to enough hazards of combat. Because, out of the blue, here comes notice that he will be re-deployed. For the fifth time, to assure a sharing of exposure to the hazards of combat. I know I’ve repeated that quote ad nauseum in this particular column. It&rsq

Millenium Clock and the hazards of being on a tour
I visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh earlier this week. I was there  for an hour and a half, in keeping with my resolve to visit museums and galleries more frequently but for shorter periods, rather than being there for hours and not able to take it all in. The Atrium with the Millenium Clock at the rear I like the Millenium Clock, one of the dominating features of the atrium. Just before 11.00 I saw a North American guy taking photos of the clock and I suggested that he wait until 11:00 when the clock would grind into action. However he was with a tour and they were departing at 11.00. I think it is a pity to be in such an interesting museum, with little opportunity to return soon and to have to depart at a specific time. The clock has several sections, the crypt, at the base, the nave, the belfry and the spire. At 11:00 the Egyptian monkey in the crypt started turning a wheel, which then set various cogs in the nave into motion making the 12 figures in the bel

The Clever Cynic: The Hazards of Blogging and Some People's Idea of Fun...Sigh
Well...tonight I was snorkling around, minding my own business, and hunting for free, public domain clipart. I actually wanted a free picture of a ? (question mark). This should take seconds I thought...wrong. Well I surfed around doing various searches...I wasn't going to be choosy, any question mark would have been fine as long as it was free. I freely admit I am a free-clipart junkie and I hate having to whore my site by placing links all over in return for some free question mark gif. If I am going to whore my site it will be for profit. ;)I do, however, always appreciate those kind people (however mentally disturbed) who give freely of their time to locate public domain stuff for me to use to pimp out my posts. I am all for delegating.;) I finally stumbled upon a web page that looked promising. I read and read ...hunting for the IMAGES. I want my clip art quick and dirty. A slam-bam, thank you ma'am sort of thing. I leave feeling cheap and dirty, but hey I got my clip art...that

      (Un)Acceptable Hazards (Opinions, P2)
{summary} That was me a whole lot of years ago.  I posted this photo because of the Fraulein commented on plastic crib bumpers which made me remember that I, er, had one of those. As you can also see from the picture, I’m already standing yet the handy-dandy Raggedy Ann & Andy mobile has not been taken down.  I’m also in arm’s reach of wodden wall art which I could have taken off the wall and beat myself about the head and neck with.  I could have then taken the nail from the wall from which the art had been hanging and pierced myself.  Then I could have grabbed that air freshener and eaten it.  Then, if I was feeling quite spry, I could have grabbed that curtain and used it to either rappel down the side of the crib or else strangle myself. And because I’m typing this from my Durham, NC home and not from Heaven, Sto-vo-kor, or some other place, I am obviously still alive. By contemporary standards of baby safety, I should hav

      Cat Care: Hazards
The Indoor Cat: Hazards by: Laurie Buckley When leaving your cat or cat’s home alone indoors for any period of time, take care to remove any potential hazards. Be sure to keep cupboards closed as they may house hazardous substances, particulary in the kitchen, and block off all chimneys. And also so as not to cause a temptation as playthings, any electrical cords should be starightened up and secured. You may also want to free up a couple of decent sized surfaces of any knicknacks to be available as resting places for the cat. Be sure to shake out any bedding material every day.

      Commute-Associated Hazards
I hate when a bead of water drops from scaffolding above the sidewalk or from support beams along the ceiling of the subway station and hits me in the head. I swear, I feel like something is going to grow out of my hair within a few hours.Among the other hazards facing commuters in the concrete jungle, falling ice and stray voltage have resulted in serious injury and even death in recent years, as reported by NewYorkology.[From The New York Times, March 20, 2007]: One woman was briefly hospitalized after hit with ice at Lexington Avenue and East 89th Street and another was hit on West 43rd Street in front of the New York Times building. Over in New Jersey, a large chunk of ice melted off the Pulaski Skyway, hitting two women in a sport utility vehicle. It's also a good time to worry about stray voltage, which has killed a few dogs and one person in New York City in the past couple years. Salt, used heavily on streets and sidewalks to melt the ice, creates a path for electricity to trav

Health Hazards of Cocaine - 2
Use of cocaine in a binge, during which the drug is taken repeatedly and at increasingly high doses, may lead to a state of increasing irritability, restlessness, and paranoia. This can result in a period of full-blown paranoid psychosis, in which the user loses touch with reality and experiences auditory hallucinations.Other complications associated with cocaine use include disturbances in heart rhythm and heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory failure, strokes, seizures and headaches, and gastrointestinal complications such as abdominal pain and nausea. Because cocaine has a tendency to decrease appetite, many chronic users can become malnourished.Different means of taking cocaine can produce different adverse effects. Regularly snorting cocaine, for example, can lead to loss of the sense of smell, nosebleeds, problems with swallowing, hoarseness, and a chronically runny nose. Ingesting cocaine can cause severe bowel gangrene due to reduced blood flow. People who inject cocaine ca

Health Hazards of Cocaine - 1
Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant that interferes with the reabsorption process of dopamine, a chemical messenger associated with pleasure and movement. The buildup of dopamine causes continuous stimulation of receiving neurons, which is associated with the euphoria commonly reported by cocaine abusers.Physical effects of cocaine use include constricted blood vessels, dilated pupils, and increased temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. The duration of cocaine’s immediate euphoric effects, which include hyperstimulation, reduced fatigue, and mental alertness, depends on the route of administration. The faster the absorption of the drug, the more intense the high. On the other hand, the faster the absorption, the shorter the duration of action. The high from snorting may last 15 to 30 minutes, while that from smoking may last 5 to 10 minutes. Increased use can reduce the period of time a user feels high and increases the risk of addiction. Some users of cocaine

      Hazards of Motherhood
Spencer has been grounded the past week and it's nearly killed him--eight inches of new snow and he's in stir. Today he made parole and as there's only an hour of daylight after school's out, he quickly grabbed his snowboard and David and headed for the neighborhood hill. It's a ten-minute walk and the boys have made the trip tons of times, summer or winter. Though I had had reservations at first about letting them go by themselves I reassured myself by saying, "Didn't I do things like this when I was a kid? Heck, we used to play by the train tracks." This afternoon I hardly gave it a second thought.Half an hour later I got a phone call. A man's voice introduced himself and said he had my boys with him in his truck, that David had been hurt and could I please come and help them?Five minutes later I was there. They'd been sledding and David (why is he always the victim?) took a snowboard to the face. There was blood. Lots of blood, as only head cuts can bleed, and I fou

      Garden Hazards For Dogs!
A quick stroll down the lawn and garden section of your local nursery may be a soothing experience for you and your guests with beautiful flowers and greenery. However, it can also pose a hidden threat to your pets, if you don't stay informed about what could be harmful to your pets.I came across a shocking news and it goes like this... an owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from a local store to use in their garden. She loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided to taste the mulch since it smelled good. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, the lady woke up and took Calypso out for her regular morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Actually, this product is HIGHLY toxic for dogs.Cocoa Mulch: This material used in planter beds is made from cocoa bean hulls, which contain potentia
