Having worked for a hospital in an IT job and then serving shortly as a volunteer firefighter I have grown to hate hospitals. The nurses, doctors and general staff always seem to be on the losing edge of frustration and take it out on everyone around them.

Nearly 19,000 people died in the United States in 2005 after being infected with virulent drug-resistant bacteria that have spread rampantly through hospitals and nursing homes, according to the most thorough study of the disease’s prevalence ever conducted.The government study, which is being published Wednesday in The Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that such infections may be twice as common as previously thought, according to its lead author, Dr. R. Australian Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott today called for the establishment of independent boards to govern hospitals. The changes will be part of the next five-year Commonwealth-state health agreement Federal funding would be withdrawn from hospitals that did not agree to the boards.Abbott says the purpose of the independent boards is to reduce bureaucracy and make public hospitals more efficient and responsive. Glenrose Rehabilitation hospital in Canada recently started using Nintendo Wii consoles to help it’s patients with movement or balance issues, and so far, this method has proved to be successful: Don Simoneau, an occupational therapist at the Glenrose, said he has used the technology on only about five patients in the past two and a half months, but already the 200 hospital therapists are clamouring to be involved with the Wii equipment. A deadly bacterium known as Klebsiella pneumoniae is believed to have killed some 120-200 patients in hospitals across the country. “Between 400 to 500 people have been infected by the bug, and 30 to 40 percent of them have already died.
