Medic says Army sergeant ordered him to suffocate Iraqi
After an Army medic reported that a bullet-riddled insurgent was going to die, his sergeant ordered him to suffocate the Iraqi before fatally shooting the man himself, the medic testified during the sergeant's court-martial Tuesday. Sgt. Leonardo Trevino had asked how to speed up the Iraqi's death following a gun battle in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, Spc. John Torres testified. The medic said he was kidding when he suggested suffocating the wounded man, but when ordered to do so, he pretended by lightly holding his hand over the man's mouth. Torres later told Army investigators that he felt bad after that night in June, although he testified Tuesday that the man was bleeding so badly that he could not have given him morphine for pain. Under cross-examination, he denied defense attorney Rich

News Thread: Fixing Afghanistan, American education, Zimbabwe recount, Iraqi women filling jobs
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Anthony Cordesman, Afghanistan won't be solved by moving out of Iraq. “In math and science, for example, our fourth graders are among the top students globally. By roughly eighth grade, they’re in the middle of the pack. And by the 12th grade, U.S. students are scoring generally near the bottom of all industrialized countries.” America's schools are in trouble, yet education is receiving scant attention from the presidential hopefuls, writes Bob Herbert. Slowly, results are coming in from Zimbabwe's election recount. The state media are calling for a unity government and various heads of state from around the world — including Gordon Brown — are pushing for an arms embargo to keep weapons out of the country

Iraqi Author 'Aref 'Alwan: The Jews Have an Historic Right to Palestine
'Alwan called on the Arab world to acknowledge the Jews' right to Palestine, because justice demanded it and also because doing so would end the violence and the killing of Arabs, as well as intra-Arab strife. He added that such a move would also open up new avenues for the Arab world that would be more consistent with the values and needs of modern society.'Alwan writes that the Arab League is to blame for the refusal to recognize the 1947 U.N. partition plan, for starting a war to prevent its implementation, and for the results of that war, which the Arabs call the Nakba (disaster). He points an accusing finger at the Arab regimes, the Arab League, and the educated circles in the Arab world, saying that they had all used the term "nakba" to direct popular consciousness toward a cultural

NEWS / Iraqi shot by British soldier to receive £2m compensation
A YOUNG Iraqi man who was accidentally shot by a British soldier is set to receive £2 million, it emerged last night. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the man – who cannot be named – was to receive the money after suffering spinal injuries that left him paralysed. The sum is far higher than any paid to any British troops injured in Iraq and is likely to reopen the controversy over compensation levels for wounded service personnel. There were also fears among opposition MPs that it could set a precedent, opening the way for further big compensation claims by Iraqis. The MoD last night insisted the case was a one-off. "It is not a precedent; it is an exceptional case. It is not expected there are any other cases of such severity," a spokesman said. He also rejected comparison

Stuff happens: Iraqi women denied basic rights
The murders of more than 125 women in Basra has been documented, but what is less known, and apparently a byproduct of the US military's surge, is the violent oppression of women throughout the rest of Iraq. In this Newsweek article, we find that the surge has created a patchwork of fiefdoms in various districts in Baghdad where women are allowed freedoms in some areas but not others. Where women are are allowed to wear black while in mourning for only three days and any longer means they are questioning the will of God. Where some women are allowed to attend college while others can't leave the house. It's an interesting portrait of what the US occupation has wrought and a glimpse into the the future of Iraq.Sacrificed to the SurgeBy Sylvia Spring and Larry Kaplow NewsweekThe insurgents

The Surge is Working: Iraqi Civilian Deaths Up
In March, civilian deaths in Iraq rose 31 percent up from February with a total of 923 Iraqi civilians killed. Of course, that will mean little to most people here, as innocent Iraqis caught in the crossfire between our troops and insurgents doesn't weigh as heavily on American consciences. So, when those who support the war claim that pulling out now will result in chaos, how exactly do they explain away nearly 1,000 dead bodies over the course of 31 days and tell me that it's a sign of stability in the region?Well, as long as the supporters of the war continue to repeat over and over again that the surge is working while the media and the public laps it up without thinking about it much like they did 5 years back with the WMDs, then this farce of a war will continue to be a waste of human
