A YOUNG Iraqi man who was accidentally shot by a British soldier is set to receive £2 million, it emerged last night.

There were also fears among opposition MPs that it could set a precedent, opening the way for further big compensation claims by Iraqis.
The MoD last night insisted the case was a one-off. "It is not a precedent; it is an exceptional case. It is not expected there are any other cases of such severity," a spokesman said.

The murders of more than 125 women in Basra has been documented, but what is less known, and apparently a byproduct of the US military's surge, is the violent oppression of women throughout the rest of Iraq. In this Newsweek article, we find that the surge has created a patchwork of fiefdoms in various districts in Baghdad where women are allowed freedoms in some areas but not others. Where women are are allowed to wear black while in mourning for only three days and any longer means they are questioning the will of God. In March, civilian deaths in Iraq rose 31 percent up from February with a total of 923 Iraqi civilians killed. Of course, that will mean little to most people here, as innocent Iraqis caught in the crossfire between our troops and insurgents doesn't weigh as heavily on American consciences. So, when those who support the war claim that pulling out now will result in chaos, how exactly do they explain away nearly 1,000 dead bodies over the course of 31 days and tell me that it's a sign of stability in the region?Well, as long as the supporters of the war continue to repeat over and over again that the surge is working while the media and the public laps it up without thinking about it much like they did 5 years back with the WMDs, then this farce of a war will continue to be a waste of human
