Marine archaeologists found the remains of a slave ship wrecked off the Turks and Caicos Islands in 1841, which apparently set free the ancestors of many current residents of these islands."Some 192 Africans survived the sinking of the Spanish ship Trouvadore off the British-ruled islands, where the slave trade was banned.Over the years the ship had been forgotten, said researcher Don Keith, so wh

      Lesbos islanders dispute gay name
Campaigners on the Greek island of Lesbos are to go to court in an attempt to stop a gay rights organisation from using the term "lesbian". The islanders say that if they are successful they may then start to fight the word lesbian internationally. The issue boils down to who has the right to call themselves Lesbians. Is it gay women, or the 100,000 people living on Greece's third biggest island - plus another 250,000 expatriates who originate from Lesbos? The man spearheading the case, publisher Dimitris Lambrou, claims that international dominance of the word in its sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders, and disgraces them around the world. He says it causes daily problems to the social life of Lesbos's inhabitants. ~ read on... ~

      Crosby-Less Pens Fall to Islanders
PENGUINS 1ISLANDERS 4 Captain Sidney Crosby missed his sixth straight game and 27th in 30, and the Penguins dropped a 4-1 decision hosted by the New York Islanders on Monday night.Bill Guerin's goal and assist led the way for New York, keeping the Penguins' playoff hopes at bay for at least one more evening. "We just came out flat," Jordan Staal said. You can always tell it's a bad sign when the highlight of the night is a mere photo op of Evgeni Malkin.Ty Conklin got the start in goal and stopped 32 of 36 shots. The only Penguin offense came from Petr Sykora's first-period power play goal set up by Jeff Taffe and Mr. Kennedy. The Pens don't have much time to dwell on this one, as they will be back at it on Tuesday night with a 7:00 date at New Jersey. Islanders sign Bryan Berard to a 1-year deal
From TSN: "I came to camp determined to prove to the Islanders I belonged in the NHL and I'm very appreciative of Garth Snow and Ted Nolan for giving me the chance," said Berard. "The guys have already shown this season what kind of character this team has and how strong a team we are. My goal is to do everything I can to make us better." Berard brings in a great primary offensive punch to the Islander's defence, that has been lacking since Adrian Aucoin left, no offence to Marc-Andre Bergeron. But can Berard stay healthy. He only played 11 games in Columbus last season because he injured his back (herniated disc). He hasn't played anything close to a full season since 2002-03, where he scored 10 goals and 38 points in 80 games with the Bruins. Strangely, he played only 58 games the next season with Chicago and scored more points (13 goals and 47 points. The next 2 seasons with Columbus he played only a combined total of 55 games, scoring 12 goals and 35 points.I wonder what the doll

New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty A Message to Long Islanders
Colleen Eren, Organizer, New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty is a friend of mine and we keep in constant contact. She would like to get more Suffolk County, Long Islanders on board. I told her I will try to help her any way I can. If you live in Suffolk County, Long Island and would like to become a member, contact Colleen Eren at www.nyadp.org. Here is something Colleen wrote. As a woman living in Brooklyn, trust me, I care about reducing violence in New York. Who wouldn't fully support the idea of lowering crime rates, making the streets safer, having fewer murders against civilians and police officers? Even if it takes some of my hard-earned taxpayer dollars, I consider it a worthwhile investment if these dollars went to improving DNA data bases so we could find repeat offenders. I would consider it worthwhile if these dollars went to funding domestic violence services, to better police training and resources, to gang interdiction programs, to resources for victims of violence. But

Guerin has received a raise for his improved play by the Islanders, signing a 2-year deal worth $4.5 million per year. Guerin scored 36 goals and added 20 assists in 66 games with the Blues and Sharks combined last season. Islanders sign Fedotenko / Kozlov stays put
the Islanders made a move to replace some of the goals they will lack in the absence of Jason Blake, signing Ruslan Fedotenko to a 1-year $2.9 million deal. Fedotenko had a great playoff run when the Lightning won the Cup in 2004, and then a career season in 2004-05 scoring 26 goals and 15 assists in 80 games. But he really slumped last season, scoring only 12 goals and 32 points in 80 games, and

the star released from the New-York Islanders
Alexei Yashin has been released from the New-York Islanders just last week and is now an unrestricted free agent. He can now negociate with any NHL team for a new contract.Among the places that he is considering, Montreal is one of his first choices. He said that he has a nice relationship with Alex Kovalev, Andrei Markov and Saku Koivu. Can Yashin really help the Montreal Canadiens? We all know that Montreal has a big hole at the center position and with Yashin's raw talent, the 6'3'' and 220 pounds center could complete an efficient line along with Alex Kovalev and Sergei Samsonov.I think that Yashin could be a short term solution but the Habs should be very cautious with the amount of money and the duration of the contract that they are willing to offer to him. I think that a deal valued between 2 and 3 Millions for a single season could be a reasonnable price tag. Montreal should not offer a multi-year deal to force the russian player to perform next season.

      Islanders 3 Devils 2 (SO)
It's all Islanders so far. They are pressing hard, and the Devils look very uncoordinated.Richard Park bags the first one after a scramble in front of the net. The 2nd goal for Park in his last 2 games. Why couldn't he still be a Canuck?I don't like Lamoriello's decision to start Clemmenson in goal. It's a big fuck-you to Toronto, and maybe that is his point. There is no love between Toronto and New Jersey....at all.7:30 2nd PeriodSame same. The Devils have generated nothing at all so far. The Islanders are fighting for their lives. No knocking Clemmenson though. He is holding a lifeless team in it. One more goal by the Isles and it's pretty much over.Isles goalie Wade Dubielewicz looks like he's going to post a shutout. Where the hell is John Maclean and Claude Lemieux when you need them? The Star Islanders
I'm not a Star Islander. In fact, it's been ten years since I last visited. It was the night of my senior prom. I stepped out of the limo and into a house built like a Moroccan temple, a maze of soft white walls and no corners. The house belonged to a girl named Sea. I sat, curled up on the couch next to my boyfriend (the valedictorian, later the professor) and the other almost-adults. I think we watched T.V., then fell asleep in separate beds. The boyfriend: first in a line of boyfriends to become Important. Now, when I flip open the Sunday Times, I half-expect to find a section: Francie's Great and Not-so-great Loves. Reviews of minor celebrities. I've only recently moved back to Miami, so I feel a bit like a native tourist. This isn't a journal so much as a tourist guide. Point A to Point B and places off the map. If you were expecting a soap opera about botoxed housewives and Prada bags, you might want to stop reading.I'm not sure anymore what it takes to be a star, or even

Guerin to the Islanders? / Other news
With only just over 4 days left before the trade deadline, the airwaves are ripe with rumors. The following are the biggest rumors I've heard or read about today:Bill Guerin is close to being traded to the New York Islanders. Apparently Barry Melrose reported this on a New York radio station today. (Spector's) Georges Laracque could soon become Sidney Crosby's bodyguard. According to Spector's: ..he's yet to be asked by the Coyotes to waive his "no-trade" clause, "but he did reveal the Coyotes told him he would not be playing another game for them."A Washington Post writer states that if Richard Zednik and Dainus Zubrus are not signed by next Tuesday, they will be traded. The Los Angeles Times reports that Brian Burke is pursuing a forward to help the Ducks score more.Marco Sturm and the Bruins have almost completed a deal.San Jose's trade to re-acquire Alexander Korolyuk from the Devils this week has been cancelled, because Korolyuk has refused to leave Russia to join the Sharks.

Captain Canada to...the New York Islanders?
I was going to do a big post on all the trades of the day...but why bother since the only one anyone really cares about is the Ryan Smyth trade. I am in shock. Smyth is set to be a free agent at the end of this season. So he is going to the Islanders...a team that as of right now is only a point out of the playoffs with some games in hand. I know people are saying this is a huge move on Lowe
