I was on the X90 from to Gloucester Green in Oxford to Hillingdon in London when my journey to London was enlivened by news of Fathers 4 Justice campaigner Geoff Hibbert holding up traffic on the M25 dressed as Batman, although from the Times pictures he's probably not the best choice for a sequal to The Dark Knight. Drank two delicious bottles of wine over the past week and drank 'em the way I like to -- that is over three days. Especially with wines made from natural yeasts it takes them longer to open and reveal themselves. The first wine was from Jean-Paul Robinot who is a natural wine maker extraordinaire from the Loire Valley who I had the pleasure of meeting at La Dive Bouteille back in February. A wack
When I was a kid, maybe 8 years old, I was watching a movie at my grandma's apartment. I recall a character from the movie--an elderly man, not a regular gambler by any means--at a casino playing roulette. He started with a small sum and within a half an hour his luck had grown his cache to a sum of tens of thousands of dollars. A crowd had gathered in the meanwhile, cheering him on. He took h
Though I wasn’t as awed by this most recent Journey to the Center of the Earth retelling as I’d hoped, I must admit I do remain captivated by the theory of a hollow earth and its history, proponents and suggested evidence. I think that a train journey has so much more romance and excitement, so much more character than a soulless plane journey. You get a feel of the place you are traveling thru, the people, the culture, the look, sounds, even the smells of the place. That is so much more of a sensory journey [...]

Perhaps Annie Leibovitz is the most in-demand photographer in the fashion and entertainment world today. Last year, she started working with Louis Vuitton to create a series of new ads for the said fashion house. One ad featured Mikhail Gorbachev, a Russian politician, looking disturbed in the back of a cab in Germany. He looked out the window with the Berlin Wall in the background and next to him on the seat was an LV duffel bag. At the bottom of the ad is a tagline which reads, “A Journey Brings Us Face To Face With Ourselves.”In another ad, French actress, Catherine Deneuve is seen sprawled out at a train station, relaxing with her luxury LV luggage. At the bottom of the ad is a tagline which reads, “Sometimes, Home Is Just A Feeling."Tennis champion Andre Agassi and his wife, Ste

A long time ago, I looked forward to summer vacations when schools would close for a month. Every year at this time we went to Calcutta, Allahabad or Kanpur to visit my many aunts, uncles and grand-parents. We would travel by railroad for two days to cover the 2000 kms distance from Mysore. This wasn't unusual; very few people took a flight when traveling within India those days. The long train journey was a joyful experience. I was absorbed by the fascinating sights and sounds during the train ride. Air-conditioned coaches were rare, which meant open windows (and dusty faces); we kids could stick our faces against the windows in an attempt to see the rest of the train winding its way through hills, valleys, forests and creeks. Photo credit: Train in the rains by Bramha.I don't think I have seen as much of India as I did during those train journeys, albeit through a child's eye. When I was older and travelled alone, I would get down at every station to stretch, sip tea from earthen c

In this quasi-mythological costume series, Hercules (in Greek Herakles), the noble bastard son of Zeus, hence hated to death by his step-mother Hera, doesn't live as an Olympian after accomplishing his Works and the Argonauts' journey, as classical myth has it, but relinquishes immortality and continues to fight both human and supernatural evil on earth, as a wanderer in and beyond Greece, usually accompanied by his human side-kick Iolaus and sometimes by dodgy Salmoneus. Countless are the challenges, either especially set up by Hera or just on his way, but he always triumphs against all odds, delivers otherwise often hopeless mortals and moves on to new adventures. “Marked?” Pea said, showing remarkable control of his voice. James nodded. “Assuming this is true, this is a horrendously negative turn of events. Marked…by Luthien. We have to presume that Luthien is reading his future too. Which means that Luthien must know this creature.” “No,” James said. “I don’t think Luthien knew him, probably never even heard of him. Most likely anyway.” “The laws of magic…” “I know the laws.” In fact, he did know the laws, most of them at least. He had read them in the etiquette book. They were more general understandings that laws. Nobody had set down the rules of how magic worked. It had always been there. In a strange way, James thought of magic scientists casting out theories, digging up evidence, and doing experiments to prove some point. “Magic cannot be used on the unknown.” “Which is precisely why Luthien must know this man.”
Railways created the world we know. Before railways, there were no seaside resorts, no suburbs, no standard time. Now Europe's railways are trying to change the way we travel in a world that has been reshaped – and threatens to be asphyxiated – by car and air travel.
Hey Moms! Here are some tips for traveling with your kids this Summer. With School ending and year end recitals my plate is full. I say lets gear up for rest and relaxation. I'll continue A Marathon Adoption of Epic Proportions next month. I hope these travel tips are useful. Feel free to add some of your own in the comment section.

Infants and Toddlers: Be prepared and have the essentials at the ready.
1) Prepare a days feedings, snacks etc. Put them in a cooler or separate bag with all your eating accessories. The "take and toss†containers are great for trips and worth the money.
2) Purchase a nice size diaper bag with multiple pockets.
This way you can put a entire day of baby's things in one place. Also, set aside a space for mom's essentials and eliminate your own purse. Backpacks are great for traveling because they keep your hands free to chase down the wayward toddler or handle boarding passes.
3) Purpose to keep your child's main nappi
Well, after weeks of artistic ‘hibernation’ I’ve finally kicked my creative arse back into gear and here is the result. I call it ‘Journeys End’ which seems not only an appropriate title for the above work but also an apt metaphor for my own recent quest to find somewhere we could at last call home. So, house moving stuff aside, I can at last let loose a long sigh and look forward to wallowing in my creative juices. (The proverbial pig in pooh no less!)Once again I’ve continued with my preoccupation (obsession!) with skies. I just luv em! They’re so expressive, vibrant and alive. They warm the soul, sooth the eyes and add a healthy dollop of colour into a sometimes monotone world. Allied with an African theme they make for the perfect visual setting.Again I’ve used a panoramic box canvas 48"x16"(I’m really falling in love with these) they’re absolutely brilliant for creating that whole wide open vista effect; you know the ‘Out of Africa’ look!System 3Acrylics re

I had the chance to read a really good book recently, courtesy of Paraclete Press; it is called "American Pilgrimage: Sacred Journeys and Spiritual Destinations." Written by Mark Ogilbee and Jana Riess, it depicts their journeys as they travel to and along with others on pilgrimages to certain locations in America that are popular pilgrimage destinations. One aspect of the book that I really appreciated was that it focused on spiritual pilgrimage sites here in the United States. So often I hear about so-and-so going to Iona, or Taize, perhaps the Northumbria Community. But how many people take the time to travel to spiritual destinations right here in the US? I've had a chance to visit some monasteries (my favorite was Christ in the Desert), but it's always been my impression that in order to have an intense spiritual experience, I had to get out of the US.
The authors of this book have proved me wrong.
To give you an idea of the places they visit, here are some of the sites writ
