For the month just ended I’ve been working on a project near Little Rock, Arkansas, my first-ever long-term experience in the area. I loved every part of it, except being in the weather map bulls-eye every day. Little Rock is right smack in the middle of Tornado Alley, and the weather did not disappoint this [...]
Last Month these American Princes dropped their newest full length Other People via Yep Roc Recs. These guys added new member Will Boyd, a 5 piece and they are rockin' some rad indie. It's definitely their best effort yet, although Less and Less had some great tracks. You can get that album here and go here to listen. They are currently doing some mini touring, and their album just dropped in

I was walking around the grounds of the Clinton Library in Little Rock needing a picture of the main building for another project. Unfortunately, I was having trouble. To me, the building looked like little more than a rather drab, monolithic slab. Nothing about it attracted my interest. More succinctly, I just wasn’t too impressed [...]

50 years ago today, federal troops were sent to little rock high to enforce the Brown decision and integrate the school. the bbc has a great piece on the huge importance of this event (and of its continued relevance with recent court rulings against affirmative action in college admissions)."with all deliberate speed..."
Looking at the pictures, it is hard to imagine that it happened in America, but it did, and not so long ago: Fifty years ago in Little Rock, Ark., white adults hurled insults and jeers at nine black teenagers who just wanted to go to school. (Video 3:35) (Timeline)It was the first test of the Supreme Court decision striking down the separate-but-equal doctrine that had kept schools legally segregated. In September 1957, the nine black students trying to integrate Little Rock Central High School were repeatedly blocked by the Arkansas National Guard, under orders from the governor. After weeks of crisis, on Sept. 25, President Eisenhower brought in the U.S. Army -- and the Little Rock Nine, as they came to be called, finally enrolled.Today, Little Rock Central High School is more than half black and it is one of the best public high schools in the country, sending students each year to the nation's best colleges. But while there is no longer anger between the races at Central, both teache

Black students like Elizabeth Eckford faced hatred to integrate Central High in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957. Today white school board members are supporting an embattled black superintendent. Photo by Will Counts/Associated Press.Fifty years after the epic desegregation struggle at Central High School, the school district here is still riven by racial conflict, casting a pall on this year’s ambitious commemorative efforts. In the latest clash, white parents pack school board meetings to support the embattled superintendent, Roy Brooks, who is black. The blacks among the school board members look on grimly, determined to use their new majority to oust him. Whites insist that test scores and enrollment have improved under the brusque, hard-charging Mr. Brooks; blacks on the board are furious that he has cut the number of office and other non-teaching jobs and closed some schools. The fight is all the more disturbing to some here because it erupted just as a federal judge declared Little
For those who can't get enough of Sunday's story about teacher bonuses in Little Rock, here's some worthy nuggets that had to be nixed from the story because of space constraints:
The story mentions a survey by a University of Arkansas researcher who found teachers getting bonuses in the Little Rock pilot project had far different attitudes about cooperation and standardized testing than teachers at similar schools who were not getting the bonuses. To be more specific: When teachers were asked if performance pay increases collaboration among teachers, 83 percent of the pilot teachers said yes, compared to 19 percent of non-pilot teachers. When asked if performance pay led to counterproductive competition, 22 percent of pilot teachers said yes, compared to 74 percent of non-pilot. When teachers were asked if gains on student test scores were an appropriate measure of teacher effectiveness, 65 percent of pilot teachers said yes, compared to 19 percent of non-pilot.
