Add Fear and Longing in NaNoWriMo
Another NaNoWriMo Writing Desperation Suggestion: You've probably reached the point in your story where the tension is high, the action is furious, and everyone's bickering, if not outright fighting. Either that, or you're slogging through a story that's much like a giant pile of oatmeal. At least, that's what my story feels like to me, right now. Anyway, I want to make another suggestion for s

Until a few weeks ago I was only dating for fun. I got to know other gays, I went out on some romantic daytrips, and I had sex with a few. On other occasions, she stood sideways on the sill, looking inwards..perhaps introspecting? Whatever be her mood, the contentment on her face was unmistakable. Every time I passed her by I wondered, what made her day, or was it life in general that continued to woo her?Maybe it had something to do with her involvement with the differently-abled kids who visited her class each day. She gave immense pleasure and joy time after time.On rare occasions she stood with her hands stretched out towards the flowers on the other side of the window. My little brainiac, my redheaded fact monger, my pride and joy, came in third in the region’s math field day competition. Here he is, sporting his new jewelry. Stunning, eh? The thing is, math is not Teddy’s strength. He loves history and social studies. Verbal facts and concepts are his thing. When he was in the second grade, we used Census data as a behavioral reinforcer for him. Yes, that’s right. At age eight he could tell you the population and racial breakdown of every county in West Virginia. When he misbehaved, we took away his data. It devastated him. I guess, that is a kind of math. Lindros & Yashin: longing for selfless sacrifice?
‘Yashin heads home to Russia,’ the banner cried. And yesterday, there was one about Lindros contemplating his future. Together, Yashin and Lindros beg the question: will these guys be happy with their careers? Both were big, strong, talent athletes … with attitude, the attitude that they wanted to do it their way, not the way it was done. And they did, with some success and considerable riches. But as they put their feet up and look back, will they be as disappointed with their results as their fans are for them? Both were sure-fire Hall-of-Famers, can’t-miss goal-scoring power-forwards who would carry their teams on their shoulders. But, as contrarians, both were never leaders and as hockey players they only toyed with the top tier. Would it have been different if, say, they took the Gordie Howe/ Bobby Clark approach and worked like hell while glad for the opportunity? We’ll never know. But, in the nadir of their careers, both do seem like a single warn

This is certainly a Paradise Philippines Rant (Wouldn’t pass as a Paradise Philippines Joke no matter what happens.) Anyways, I was browsing over Zippy’s pics on Flickr.com and I found a whole bunch of Fireworks-pics on there. I’m not sure if they were taken during Christmas, but they do evoke a very strong emotion (for me). Here in Paradise Philippines we have lots of celebrations and festivities year-round, but I can pick out Christmas and Valentines as the two most memorable celebrations in my one full year. Why? Well, I get rich during Christmas, from the dozen-or-so cash gifts from my uncles and aunts. And I go poor during Valentines, because I have to give a lot of lovely gifts to people. I know some people would say that I shouldn’t really give too many gifts during Valentines. But my ten girlfriends want them, and I really can&rsquo

Fearing God and Longing for his Judgment:
In Psalm 119: 113-20, the Psalmist declares that he hates those who are doubleminded (113), and demands that evildoers depart (114). He observes that the Lord has rejected all those who wander from his statutes (118) and has removed all the wicked of the earth like dross (120), all the while professing a love for the Law, word, and promise of God. Then in v. 120, he strongly states, My flesh trembles for fear of You, And I am afraid of your judgments. This short statement is striking, especially after the contrasts of the previous verses. There are doubleminded men, but he loves God's Law. The wicked have wandered from the Lord's statutes, but he waits for his promises. The thought of departing from the ways of the Lord has struck terror deep in the Psalmist's soul. He knows that the Lord rejects those who wander from his statutes and removes the wicked like dross. "Dross" is worthless or harmful material that has to be removed, from metals for instance. The way that dross is remov

Longing for Green - Miami Tweaks Deal for Chiefs QB
Could the most longest awaited move in NFL history finally be on the verge of getting done? Well, let’s put it this way - at least the Dolphins and Chiefs are at least talking about the move to finally get quarterback Trent Green into a Fins uni and out of Big Red. The latest bit of talking between the two states that the Dolphins have modified their trade offer for Green. The Miami Herald reports Friday that the Dolphins are now willing to offer a conditional sixth-round pick that would become a fifth if Green meets certain conditions. The deal over the past few months was that Miami was only going to give up a 6th rounder for Green, a QB who they already have a new contract in place with and ready to go once the deal gets done. KC all along has wanted at least a fourth-round pick for their former starter under center. Jim Steiner, Green’s agent, was quoted in the Herald as stating “I think we will get a deal done, there have been a lot of conversations.” There

For All the Eves longing for an Adam (and vice versa)
If you’re single, a Christian, and not called to celibacy, you may be asking questions like, who should I marry? Is there such a thing as a soul mate? Does god have someone particular in mind, or is it up to me? To all of you, my heart goes out. I’ve been in those shoes myself. Let me tell you, ladies, you can have soul mates without reincarnation, because the Lord knows exactly who He wishes you to marry and had that man’s faults and weaknesses in mind when He made you. Likewise, guys, just as the ladies have been made for their Adam, God also has an Eve out there for you. Unfortunately, most people today don’t seek the Lord’s will on this matter, and wind up under covenant with people they weren’t intended for and bound by their oath until death do they part. And He certainly does not approve of dumping that person without just cause (ie, adultery) when you figure out your mistake, no matter how wrong for you they are. Unless you’re in physic

With that in mind, childhood dreams of mine sometimes come back from deep inside my memories. Among them is paying a visit to my relatives living in Chicago, Illinois and spend my vacation with them. Most of relatives are already living in ‘the windy city’ ever since my grandparents migrated to the US long before I was born. They settled there, found a very good living and have lived the ‘American dream’ - to a modest level at most. Still, it was enough to support us who were still here in the Philippines. Sometimes I cannot help but wonder that twenty one years of being continents apart would’ve done something profound to our families. It’s a long time and this I could clearly see in my grandparents’ faces in the pictures they send, usually sometime after Christmas. Time and gravity has shaped and molded the faces of

What do I do whenmy love's awayDoes it worry to be all alone? How do I feel by the endof the dayAre you sad becauseyou are on your own?--The BeatlesWhat does one do when one's beloved is away in a foreign land? The Beatles' song mentioned above speaks of getting by with a little help from friends. Well, not quite, if you have friends like mine. ("So he lives abroad. Imported boyfriend, eh? Me: "Not imported, but exported. He's an NRI, you see.”) But that is beside the point. What I feel is not the debilitating, sickening pangs of separation but a teeny-weeny niggling feeling of something being amiss. I like the smell of the rain. Strictly the rain doesn't have a smell, but it does. Dogs always smell worse when they're wet. Trees always smell more like trees when it's been raining. The rain brings out the smells of things like salt brings out the taste of a sauce. Or one blue flower in a bed of poppies brings out the orange in the poppies. The rain reminds me of home. It reminds me of a place without stacks of buildings, a place where two clubs and a handful of pubs seem like a pretty good thing. It reminds me of walking down paths and having to give way to the herd of sheep coming towards you. It reminds me of a church with no roof, and one bell that doesn't work. It reminds me that once, things were different.Once things weren't so difficult. Once Christmas wasn't looked at with impending doom, once it was a joy and something to look forward to. Once I didn't need to be held tight every night just to prove that as much as my family suck, someone at least cares about m

I think it's because of the single woman's most hated day of the year which occurred earlier in the week. I usually say I've never received a Valentine's card in my life, and then I remember what he sent me in my first year. It looked like a notelet into which he had stuck a Shakespearean sonnet printed on his computer, with a hand written envelope. He had left it in my pigeonhole, and I still don't know why he picked me. Still got it, even now. No doubt he sent several at the same time, but even so, I've never been sure what it was he saw when he looked at me. He spent several nights with me over the course of a couple of years, but would hardly acknowledge me in public. He was so beautiful, but he knew it. That was a man who could pull off a sneer. He exuded an air of superiority, which made me e
