      Getting to Luxembourg
Luxembourg airport is 6km from the city. It is the home base for Luxair, the national flag carrier airline. There are flights from London by British Airways and VLM Airways. The airport is a small regional airport so I was surprised to see 747's at an airport serving a city with a population of just over 75,000 people. These Jumbo's though are cargo airlines. Luxembourg has positioned itself as a cargo hub and it is one of the worlds busiest. During the day you will see 747 cargo planes flying over the city.Luxembourg AirportTrainLuxembourg has its own state railway, CFL. There are direct international services from Brussels, Paris and Trier in Germany.Gare Centrale LuxembourgBusLuxembourg has international services by Eurolines.

The City of Luxembourg is the capital of The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a pocket sized little country in Western Europe of just 82km long and 57km wide.Luxembourger's are a linguistic lot, having three official languages: French, German and Luxembourgish. English is also taught at schools as well.Luxembourg is famous for its private banking services and many international companies have offices here attracted by its tax haven status. Luxembourg is a seat of several institutions of the European Union, including the European Court of Auditors, the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. There is more to Luxembourg though than business, banking and bureaucrats.Luxembourg's eponymously titled capital sits on either side of a valley that splits the city in two. The river Petrusse flows here, where it joins the river Alzette. 2008 Euro qualifying Group G match previews: Netherlands vs Bulgaria, Belarus vs Romania, & Luxembourg vs. Slovenia
Netherlands vs. Bulgaria, 1430 ESTAmsterdam Arena - AmsterdamA win here for the Dutch puts them in a decent position to advance. Playing at home and having one of the best squads in the world, you've got to think they'll pull it off, but with the Oranje, you never know. They were unimpressive in their recent loss to Switzerland, but it was only a meaningless friendly. Before that they were unbeaten in their previous 11 including three straight wins on the road. Last but not least, they are relatively healthy and boost an attack that could probably score if you gave the opposition 13 players.Bulgaria is not without their stars either as Dimitar Berbatov and Martin Petrov can at times carry a squad, but even against the sometimes lackadaisical Dutch defense, I don't think they'll have enough here. Maybe if Valerie Bujinov wasn't hurt I'd give them a chance, but he is, and they'll lose, 0-2.Belarus vs. Romania, 1200 ESTDinamo - MinskAs long as Romania is healthy, they should at

In the hills of Weiswampach, Luxembourg yesterday, the 12th International Wämper Triathlon became the setting for the national championship Olympic distance (1,5 km swimming, 40 km cycling, 10 km running) triathlon for both Belgium and Luxembourg. The Belgian championship was scheduled to take place in Vilvoorde, Belgium, but because the concentration of Salmonella bacteria in the water was too high, the Belgians moved to Luxembourg. On Saturday, an event for children and for the handicapped took place, along with the 10 kilometre running event. On Sunday, the Juniors and the athletes for the Promotion race started the day, followed at 15:00 by the elite athletes. Even though dark clouds hung over Weiswampach most of the afternoon, there was only a short rain shower during the cycling course. In the men's race, Peter Croes (Belgium, Atriac team) and Dirk Bockel (Luxembourg, Celtic Diekirck team) started together for the final 10 kilometre run, but Bockel managed to outrun Croes by 23 s

      Leaving Luxembourg
Deborah in the Finals The final day of the competition is past. I did not make it to the finals, but my friend Roberto was awarded Third Prize. Congratulations! There was no First Prize unfortunately. The jury seemed not to know exactly what they wanted, since so many experienced conductors were voted out in the previous rounds. I am convinced there were conductors professional and worthy enough for the First Prize! But this is how it went this time... How Ivan felt after the semi-final results... The Orchestra Philharmonique de Luxembourg did a heroic job playing many big works in the finals without rehearsal. There was Firebird, Brahms 1st and 2nd symphonies, Brahms Haydn variations and last but not least Rahmaninov 2nd and 3rd symphonies! I want to congratulate and thank the orchestra and its wonderful players. Hope to see you in the future! The Valley (photo by Ivan) Now all that is left is to pack and leave Luxembourg behind! It is a beauty among cities I must say. I don't kno

Scotland via Luxembourg, Amsterdam and Dublin
August 15, 2006We said goodbye to Anna, Isaac, and John at the Luxembourg airport. Anna and I held each other for a long time. It could easily be another two years before we see each other again. Although airline madness continues we were able to board with carry on luggage surely because we were travelling from one European Union country to another. After a one hour flight we had a 3.5 hour layover in Amsterdam. We passed it pleasantly in the large airport. During this time I discovered that the man with the scary eyes and wiry hair stamped on KLM cream and sugar is Rembrandt and that Heineken is Holland's Budweiser (remembering some Americans' snobbery around the brand). It was interesting to look up and see the flight boards announcing flights to every major city in the world. If I didn't feel like a world citizen at this point, I never would. I did.We arrived in Dublin in the early evening. Tom and Sara picked us up. Bless their hearts. We had somehow overlooked that

We discovered our bags were 3 pounds overweight but with a wink and a nod we were told we were okay. That's friendly, laid back Ireland.Paul and I slept through this one-hour hop to Amsterdam. It seemed the entire journey would go well. When we landed we had barely one hour to find our gate for Luxembourg. On the outset it seemed like plenty of time but the more we walked through the labyrinth we realized we would be lucky to make it in time. We were following the signs and we were not lost but we made left turns, right turns, went upstairs, then downstairs, then upstairs, then down stairs, right, left. We made it about 5 minutes before the bus left to take us out to the plane (another surprise). As we got off the bus to board in the middle of a field I noticed Fokker 50 written on the wing which certainly reminded me of a very funny American movie called "Me
