About a month ago I wrote about a new Islay DVD called 'The Wildlife Gems of Islay', which is filmed and produced by Gordon Yates. I have seen the DVD twice so far and enjoyed it immensly. Dr Malcolm Ogilvie, ornithological and botanical surveyor who lives on Islay, made a review of the DVD as well which was published in the Ileach on the 1st of March:Malcolm Ogilvie: Gordon Yates has been coming to Islay for more than 30 years filming the island's birds, animals and scenery. Many of us have attended his annual film shows here when he has delighted us with his expert camerawork on the birds and other wildlife not just of Islay, but of his home territory in the Pennines, or further afield in, for example, Alaska, Iceland, Greenland and Spitsbergen. All of those films were taken on wh

Blink is about the first two seconds of looking–the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of “thin slices” of behavior. The key is to rely on our “adaptive unconscious”–a 24/7 mental valet–that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea. Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us “mind blind,” focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to “the Warren Harding E

I love this show. It’s delightfully funny and I never get tired of watching it. But I thank god that I don’t know that family. Do you imagine having to listen to Lois yell at you constantly? Could you stand Malcolm act like an arrogant know it all 24/7? How long could you avoid being pranked by Reese? And please don’t get me started on Francis.
These are the people you don’t want to know but you are sure glad someone made a TV show out of it.
Cast: Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Justin Berfield, Erik Per Sullivan, Jane Kaczmarek, and Christopher Masterson
Plot: Malcolm, a gifted young boy, tries to survive in the world with his dysfunctional family.

I Met the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Brother Malcolm X Shabazz at the Seattle Center During the World's Fair in 1961By Karen Cole PeraltaWord Count: 1,600The following events seem dreamlike to me, but I remember them all quite well, as young as I was at the time. I’m now 47 years old, and was a little over one year of age when my Mom told me that the famous Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X were going to be at the Seattle Center during the beginning of the World’s Fair in 1961.As a one year old child, I was an avid television watcher. I had picked up a little about the civil rights war and how ugly racism could be. I knew two different kinds of people were involved, and roughly what they looked like, but as to the rest, I didn’t like it. It scared me, and it seemed

Well, I must say I have a pretty bad knowledge of American history and always knew that name without really knowing what he did. Thanks to the movie, I now know the big lines and I have to say I’ve been a bit shocked. I’ve always thought of him as Luther King kind of guy but if you pay attention to his early speeches, he was kind of a violent spokesman preaching anti-white stuffs. Fortunately, after his trip to the Mecca, he found out his own way and stopped following extremists ideas. Unfortunately, that led to his death. Anyway you can’t disregard the influence he’s had on the American culture and I invite everybody to watch that movie. Denzel Washington’s performance is just *wow*.

He was murdered 42 years ago in New York City by Black people. At whose behest is still debated, but Black men fired the shots in the Audubon Ballroom. Malcolm's been dead longer than the 39 years he walked and spoke among US. As is the case with Martin Luther King Jr., as time goes by, his image becomes less radical than it was as he lived. He's an image on a piece of headgear or a T-shirt. He's the name of a street in Harlem that we denizens still call Lenox Avenue.Let's remember the radical, non-conformist, in-your-face and media-savvy Malcolm "by any means necessary"!!!
