It's been a year since my father died. On a picture-postcard beautiful afternoon, my mother, one of my sisters and I went out to visit his grave, on which the stone has just been placed. He's buried in an old country church in the hunt country north of Baltimore City. It's the family church, first of my mother's family, going back to the 1700's, and then of my father, going back to when he immig

Ok, so I'm feeling quite somber right now. Growing up Memorial Day was just another holiday - an excuse to cancel school, take a long weekend, gear up for summer and have a good time. I vaguely remember my mom and dad would occasionally return from a visit to the family plot where my dad's parents are both buried, and I would be like "Oh yeah, we're supposed to reflect on the dearly departed today
Today is the day Memorial Day was originally observed on prior to being moved to create a three day weekend. Over at Done With Mirrors Callimachus tells the stories of soldiers and civilians that gave their lives doing what they believed was right and highlights one of the truly grim facts of war; that all too often war costs us bravest and most selfless citizens that our nation has to offer.
Right before I published my previous post, a reply to an anonymous commenter, they left another comment. Anonymous said it was okay (in other words never mind) and that they wouldn't be coming back. And, so far they haven't been back, and so I'm moving on. :0)I gotta tell you what I great time I had with the Big Weiss family visiting A Hoosier Family! Last time I saw my sister and her family was

Since 2006 we have been going to Odiorne Point State Park on Memorial Day. The first year I was 8 months pregnant with Lani and basically sat on my fat pregnant butt:) Last year we were able to bring Lani with us. I certainly was not able to sit on my butt this time with an 11 month old who wanted to MOVE constantly! I almost dressed Lani in that same outfit since it still fits her. Too funny!!

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day. I did, the wife and I celibrated her birthday spending the night at a local hotel Casino and resort. A good time was had by us both. But I could not help but think about Memorial Day and where it comes from, and its connection to the blues. I have heard songs by several of the prewar bluesmen like Sonny Boy Williamson I, that mention Decoration Day. So

I gotta say, while the libs think this guy is the second coming, I have to question his basic intellect. He seems to be a daily gaffe machine… this one came over the weekend. It doesn’t get much better than this (email readers watch here):

Well as Mike said in his post, we were unable to go to Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600, but we did sit around the camp fire and watch it.

5-23-08 “Try to remember what Memorial Day really is all about, especially now. The US military has not been this attacked and vilified since the Vietnam War era, except the difference is in this case the US military in Iraq and Afghanistan are cleaning up, cleaning clocks. The news out of Iraq, from Sadr City and Basra is so good the Drive-Bys are ignoring it. The Iraqis taking over in
Yesterday my husband and I had planned to see the movie Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. As soon as we arrived in the movie theater I was surprised to see the chaos among the movie goers. The theater was packed with people. When we looked at the schedule for the Indiana Jones, it was all sold out!. I was disappointed because I'd really want to see this movie right then. So we
It's good to see that the standards are set incredibly low for what the ideal weekend in Flint entails."It would have been hard to script Memorial Day weekend much better for the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission. There was warm-enough weather and little rain, good crowds, and no E.coli problems."~Ron Fonger/Elizabeth Shaw of The Flint Journal
This weekend has been quite something. So this will just be a long rant of things. Friday I went to see the new Indy movie. yes i went and saw it, yes it was a good movie. before all of you haters go omg it was horrible. i can't believe they did that! 1. STFU! 2. OMFG Get over IT! 3. Its just a movie and it was damn entertaining, so WTF are you complaining about? Are you expecting it to change y
We’re just past Memorial Day weekend. I have to say that I’m a bit saddened that Memorial Day isn’t really observed for what it’s meant to honor, which is fallen U.S. soldiers. I don’t go out of my way to do a lot for the day, but I do think about the sacrifices made by others. Unfortunately, I saw a lot of other celebrations going on, too, that had nothing to do w

Last year on May 26th my nephew Alex drowned in a lake near his home. Seven years old and profoundly autistic, he was a charming master of escape and even with all the precautions his parents had taken to prevent such a tragedy he slipped away and by the time neighbors and family could locate him it was too late.It was a time our family will always remember and we think of Alex often, especially
LogoBlog proudly honors U.S. Memorial Day 2008 but we are badly missing Google’s logo design on this occasion. Yahoo! and Ask.com, even Dogpile, all commemorated Memorial Day, along with other holidays and events, but for some reason Google seems to be reluctant to do so.

We went to my mother-in-law’s place today for Memorial Day. Please join me in a moment of reflection for those who have given their lives in times of war.

Well my hubby and the kitties all spent a nice day at home. Kali made sure we were awake by 4 am, she just doesn't get the concept of sleeping in. Simba is up on the back of my computer chair right now.

CULTURE WATCH, Volume 16by Nancy MorganRight Bias This weekend, the country mourns our fallen soldiers. Without them its very possible our lives would mirror those poor souls in Burma, or worse. Thank God for our country, our soldiers and our way of life. I count my blessings every day. Unfortunately, there are those that don't appreciate how very blessed we are to live in the greatest country in

We made one up to Youngstown and back (about a 400 mile round trip) to see my wife's birth mother (she was given up for adoption at a few days old). >Glen Campbell wrote the song Galveston for Vietnam War Veterans, although I believe it's a soldiers song- a battle cry from a young man far from home. On this Memorial Day let us pray that our soldiers prayers will be answered; and keep in mind one of my favorite quotes: Aeschylus"And even in our sleep pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our
In this war – as in others – I am less interested in honoring the dead than in preventing the dead.- Butler Shafferthe other day i was just glancing through the book Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukov and somewhere one line really struck me which says, "Since the end of the Vietnam War, three times more veterans have taken their own lives than the number of men and women who were killed during the
So umm... happy memorial day!
As you (should) know, there was no school today...
You know what I realized yesterday?
The chairman of Microsoft, Bill Gates is obviously super rich, but what I realized is that his name is Bill (short for William, but..). You might be wondering what in the world I mean, but think about it. He's "Billion dollar Bill"!
Strange, right?

It is Memorial Day (Observed) today in the U.S.

It has been a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend and I had some absolutely killer wines that probably helped in the relaxation.Started off with the best bottle yet of the 2004 George Breuer "Terre Montosa" which is young vines from some of his best vineyards including Berg Schlossberg and Nonnenberg. It is a wonderfully minerally and very concentrated wine with a grippy-like texture. The aromas run to
I was raised in a home which featured no television and lots and lots of books, most of them about the military and military history. The result was, I never had much of a desire to go into the military. I think that the closest I ever really got was probably summer marching band practice on a parking lot in Florida! And that was usually only a couple of weeks long.Nonetheless, I have always had t
Memorial Day is special. In nearby cemeteries in Metrowest are Medal of Honor recipients, the highest honor bestowed for bravery by the Congress of the United States. They all chose to stand and fall with those who feel it is an honor to serve their country. Memorial Day reminds me that freedom is not free.
The blog-o-sphere is full of citizens honoring the ultimate sacrifice that so many our country's soldiers have made. It is extremely difficult to put the deep sense of gratitude I feel into words (and, truthfully, it seems a bit nonsensical to try). But, I would just like to express my disappointment with the politicization and partisanship that I have seen across the internet so far this mornin

"Perhaps not in the sense as defined by economists. ... But people are already feeling the effects of a recession.
