Google Maps Is Changing the Way We See the World
2007-07-07 04:22:00
In 1765, a 22-year-old British naval officer named James Rennell set out to map the entire Indian subcontinent. Traveling with a small party of soldiers, he used the advanced technologies of the day: a compass and a distance-measuring wheel called a perambulator. During the six-year journey, one soldier was killed by a tiger, five were mauled by a leopard, and Rennell was wounded in an attack by angry locals. He survived, and his detailed maps and atlas, published in the 1780s, defined British understanding of India for generations.Years later, a British geographer wrote that, to Rennell, "blanks on the map of the world were eyesores." More than two centuries later, within the decidedly safer confines of Building 45 on Google 's Mountain View, California, campus, John Hanke clicks the 3-foot image of Earth projected on his office wall and spins it around to India. Hanke, the director of Google Earth and Google Maps , zooms in for a closer look at Bangalore. At first, the city appeared i

2007-06-28 23:19:00
The first thing most blackberry(bb) owners want to know is how to remove some of the useless icons on the main screen. Hiding these icons is very simple. Here is how to proceed. After I unlocked my blackberry and signed up for a new service, I noticed that I had a ton of duplicated icons. Most blackberry systems have too much installed anyway. Using these techniques, you'll be able to remove icons from the main screen thus increasing your efficiency.Hide an Icon:1. Go to the main screen of your blackberry2. Go to the icon you want to hide3. Press ALT and then press down on your scroll wheel4. Select Hide ApplicationUnhide an Icon:If you ever need to see your hidden icons again, you can alt+scroll wheel on the main screen and select Show All. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 / 8.0 Standard or Prof - Making pdfs searchable / OCRing
2007-06-18 08:53:00
This is a quickie recipe on how convert those non-searchable (image only) pdfs into searchable pdfs. Note, if the pdfs contain images the OCRing of the pdf may not be 100% accurate. This recipe requires you to have Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional; the reader will not have these advanced editing options. In Acrobat 7.0/8.0, open up the PDF file you want to convert.Once the non-searchable pdf is open, go to Document > Recognize Text Using OCR > StartYou can tell if a pdf is searchable or not by doing a search of the PDF in Acrobat. I usually will do a search for the word "the" since it prob is in the document. If you get no results and do see the word, its a non-searchable pdf.An alternative to doing this is Printing the PDF to the AdobePDF printer. This will also make the document searchable (ie you can print in Word to the AdobePDF printer and it will create a searchable pdf of that document).

Windows 2000/XP/Vista: Fix a Window or Application that Opens Offscreen
2007-06-13 07:16:00
Every once in a while, you will run into a situation where a window or application opens somewhere beyond the scope of your monitor. It magically was placed somewhere to the far, far right and you can't get to it to bring it back. I've experienced this with Winamp and IE has done this to me a couple of times. There's a simple solution to get your application or window back on your screen, here's how:The key to this is to change the screen resolution to a lower value, thereby making windows move everything to fit the new resolution. Once this is done, simply return the resolution to its previous setting. To change your screen resolution:1. Right-click your desktop.2. For Window s 2000/XP, Select Properties. When the Display Properties window appears, select the Settings tab. For Windows Vista , select Personalize and from the Personalize window, click Display Settings.3. Use the slider under Screen resolution to change the resolution.4. Click Apply.5. When prompted as to whether you wa

Get Latitude and Longitude values from Google Maps
2007-06-13 07:06:00
Google Maps do no display latitude and longitude values, but there is an easy trick to get these numbers. This technique will provide the latitude and longitude coordinates of the center of the map displayed by Google Maps.Looking up an address in Google Maps will center the map on that address if it was found. Because this trick provides the latitude and longitude of the center of the map, moving the map around manually after that will change the center position and this technique will not work accurately. When the location you want is in the center of the map, copy and paste this code into the location bar of your browser and press enter:javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));A little dialog box will pop up displaying the coordinates which can be copied and pasted for use elsewhere. This code can be bookmarked and then used in the future by selecting the bookmark.

How Virtual Private Networks Work
2007-06-12 07:28:00
The world has changed a lot in the last couple of decades. Instead of simply dealing with local or regional concerns, many businesses now have to think about global markets and logistics. Many companies have facilities spread out across the country or around the world, and there is one thing that all of them need: A way to maintain fast, secure and reliable communications wherever their offices are.Until fairly recently, this has meant the use of leased lines to maintain a wide area network (WAN). Leased lines, ranging from ISDN (integrated services digital network, 128 Kbps) to OC3 (Optical Carrier-3, 155 Mbps) fiber, provided a company with a way to expand its private network beyond its immediate geographic area. A WAN had obvious advantages over a public network like the Internet when it came to reliability, performance and security. But maintaining a WAN, particularly when using leased lines, can become quite expensive and often rises in cost as the distance between the offices inc

Choosing internet browser
2007-06-12 07:23:00
After getting physically connected to the Internet through your ISP, you still need one more thing to surf the web: a browser . The browser is the program that retrieves web pages from the Internet and displays them on the screen for you. It can understand the language that web pages are written in, such as HTML, ASP, CGI, etc., and produces the correct output on your screen.Browsers to choose fromThe most common browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer (short: MSIE). MSIE can be downloaded from Microsoft. You can download Netscape either by itself or as part of the Netscape Communicator package from Netscape. Firefox is a newer browser that offers tabbed windows and several unique features and improved security. Opera too offers features like pop-up blocking but it is ad-supported on the free version and if you want to browse without their ad you'll have to pay a small fee. There are other browsers such as Neoplanet, which actually is not a browser by itself, but

How to back up your data
2007-06-12 07:23:00
Backing up means to keep a copy of your important files in a separate location for retrieval in case of an emergency. Keeping a copy of it in another folder on the same hard drive though is not a good idea. It means to put it on a separate media. Preferably, you have two backups on two separate types of media in two places. The oldest and worst way to back up is to save your data to floppy. As I said before, floppies fail rather quickly and are not a reliable storage media. Bad idea. use them only for temporary storage or data transportation if there is no other way.Another older and very popular way was to use a tape drive. They could store several Gigabytes of data. The disadvantage of tape drives are that they are slow and that the tapes are somewhat sensitive to heat, magnetism etc. which does not make them the most reliable media either. Then a few years ago, the Zip drive from iomega came out. It became very popular overnight for several reasons. It is easy to use, just like a flop

How Digg Works
2007-06-12 07:15:00
The Internet hosts a wealth of information that no single person could possibly tackle in a lifetime. It would take an army to dig through the mounds of news reports and whittle the field to a manageable size, and then another army to pick and chose from that field the bits of information the average Web-savvy Joe might find interesting. And then another army to report back on whether the average Web-savvy Joe actually does find it interesting. Welcome to Digg .com, a user-driven news Web site that brings together hundreds of thousands of people to do the work of finding, submitting, reviewing and featuring news stories drawn from every corner of the Web.Digg is sort of like Slashdot without the editors, bringing a democratic approach to the news-submission Web site. At Digg, the site's users make all of the content-related decisions. For the most part, the approach seems to be working very well. Kevin Rose, once an on-air personality for TechTV, co-founded Digg in December 2004 (with

Wireless Network Security
2007-06-12 07:00:00
Wireless networking has experienced a huge increase in popularity over the last couple of years. The necessary hardware is widely available to consumers, it is very affordable, and relatively easy to install and configure. Gateway devices, common called "routers" or "firewalls" by consumers, that allow users to share a broadband connection with and protect multiple computers on a home network have been around for a while. The addition of wireless capabilities to these gateway devices gives the user the convenience of taking a computer anywhere in the house, and not have to worry about running wires through walls and crawl spaces and attics to connect computers in various parts of the house. Industrial-strength high-performance versions have been around even longer in company environments, allowing employees to roam between offices, cubes, and conference rooms with laptops without ever losing connectivity. It is a great technology that offers many benefits. As the saying goes, however, wi

Opera Mini 4: Enable Small Screen Rendering for Easier Viewing
2007-07-10 03:21:00
By default, the new Opera Mini uses a thumbnail representation of the entire web page you are viewing for initial navigation. On small screens, such as my RAZR, this view is pretty useless because it is so small that you are unable to make out any of the contents of the page. This means you don't know what to zoom in to view. You can enable the small screen rendering which is the same as earlier versions of Opera Mini while keeping the rest of the new features by following these steps:1. Open Opera Mini 4.2. Select Menu.3. Select Tools and then Settings.4. Check the Fit to width checkbox.5. Click Save.
