Nokia N76
2007-08-25 09:08:00
Nokia gives its flagship mobiles in an exclusive group known as the N series. This special place is where Nokia shows off its talents and tries to break new ground. We’ve already taken in the delights of the double-slider and navigation capable N95, the svelte, yet well specified N73, and the multimedia top-heavy N93. All these handsets are about showing off what Nokia can achieve with a mobile, and with that in mind the quad-band 3G N76 comes as a bit of a surprise. It is not a disaster as a mobile phone, just an unexpected handset to see in the N range because, unless I am missing something fundamental, it is closer to average than groundbreaking. The N76 is available in red and black. My review sample was the red variety, and I have to say that while I don’t usually go for red in a handset the all metal casing and use of silver as the other colour does have a certain appeal. It won’t be for everyone, though, and the black alternative is a rather more subtle take on thing

Nokia E65
2007-08-25 09:02:00
Nokia’s newest trio of E series handsets comprises of a follow up to the keyboarded E61 called the E61i (even for Nokia this name shows little imagination) a new communicator the E90 and the phone I am looking at in this review, the E65. The E65 comes in two colour schemes. Mine was brown – Nokia calls it Mocca – and silver. The alternative is red and silver. The brown parts are made of a rubbery substance which makes the E65 easy to grip. I don’t like the leather-look stipple on the back, but that is just a matter of personal taste. The screen is a delight. Delivering 240 x 360 pixels in an area measuring 2.25 inches corner to corner and capable of 16 million colours it is about as good as a handset screen gets. Clear, sharp and bright it is really let down by the default dull grey theme. There’s 50MB of memory built in and microSD cards can be used to expand on that. The slot is under the battery cover on the right side of the handset and though it’s protected it’

Nokia 3250
2007-08-25 08:57:00
Nokia could never be accused of producing boring handsets. OK, the company does actually make standard candybar mobiles, but it also pushes the envelope of what we expect handsets to look like and how we expect them to behave. If you doubt this think about the N90, N91 and 7380. Usually the design innovations work, but with the tri-band 3250 I’m not so sure. There’s nothing actually wrong with the general idea, which is of a candybar handset with a swivel hinge atop the number pad that lets you rotate that particular section through a total of 270 degrees. I’ll come to this element of the handset later, but first let’s look at what else is going on. The 3250 weighs an acceptable 115g, and while it is a bit on the stubby side, its 104 x 50 x 20mm shouldn’t put too much of a strain on the pocket. It’s not the neatest, tidiest looker, but it’s not bug ugly either, and if you buy direct from the Nokia online store you can chose between four different colour combinatio

Nokia 6822 on Orange
2007-08-25 08:51:00
The business mobile phone slowly evolved from a dull but functional device into a jack of all trades that allows users to work anytime, anywhere. With the introduction of the RIM BlackBerry and various combined PDA/phones, email anywhere has become a reality. The disadvantage of most of these devices is that they are much larger than your average mobile phone and thus take up a lot more space in your pocket. RIM introduced the Blackberry 7000 series – see our review of the Vodafone 7100v – to offer a smaller device that offered the same functionality, but it still felt a bit big compared to standard phones. Enter the Nokia 6822, which looks just like a normal mobile phone at first glance - it fits nicely in your pocket and it even has a built in camera. Upon closer inspection however, you realise that it is more than just a standard phone, as it has a built-in BlackBerry client and it even has a full QWERTY keyboard. I’m sure some people would be quite happy to use T9 for e

Samsung SGH-U700V
2007-08-26 21:47:00
While I wait for Samsung 's recently announced five megapixel G600 to arrive, I've settled down with its SGH-U700V. This mobile is exclusive to Vodafone as I write, and is available from free depending on your chosen contract. It is essentially an update to the SGH-U600 I reviewed in May. Just like the U600, the U700 is a very thin slider phone. In fact the two phones share similar dimensions. The U700 is a shade thicker and wider that the U600, though it's not quite as tall when closed. When opened though it's ever so slightly taller than the U600. It's also put on a bit- to the tune of 5Kg. None of these differences should be enough to sway you towards or away from one handset or the other. So what else has changed? Well essentially this new handset has been upgraded in some respects, downgraded in others and it has a new livery. There is a pink version available, but my Vodafone sample, thanks goodness, was styled in silver tones. The bulk of the casing is made of light colo

Similar to LG Prada phone, the KU990 is a keypad-less phone with a big 3" touch screen. While it is not sure if it is the next LG Prada phone, the new KU990 support HSDPA data connection now. Inline with the recent LG announcement on YouTube support, this phone will let you watch YouTube on your phone or submit video to Youtube from your phone directly. The LG KU990 has a giant 5 megapixel camera with built in flash module (Xenon Flash?). It looks like you can switch between macro or normal mode on the camera itself, but the best feature on this camera will be the capability to record video at 320 x 240 resolution and 120 fps. Memory storage will be supported by the microSD card slot. The phone will also let you listen to FM radio, or use the Muvee video editor to edit your recorded video.Other than the nice features, the site dislike the thickness of

iPhone v1.1.1 Firmware Update to Bring Video Out
2007-09-22 23:24:00
There was some information drifting around last week which suggested that Apple had muffed and mentioned the existence of video out cables with an iPod connector at one end which were iPhone compatible. At the time, it wasn't all that exciting. After all, just because a particular cable is compatible with the iPhone from a hardware perspective doesn't mean that in the long run it is actually of any use.In any event, it does seem that such a cable will be of use. We're not sure just how exciting this development is either, but it's definitely worth a mention. Okay, it's exciting enough - on with it. As previously reported, the iPhones used in today's demonstration at Apple's London media event were running iPhone firmware version 1.1.1. Later, photos of the 1.1.1 running iPhones, released by Engadget revealed the clear presence of TV out settings for the iPhone, including widescreen on/off and the selection of TV signal type (NTSC, etc). Although you'll need iPhone compatible vi

Apple to Add 3G and GPS to New iPhone in Q1 2008
2007-09-22 23:22:00
As we all know, there's never a shortage of rumors spewing out of the "iPhone 2" rumor mill. Usually, they're worth little more than ignoring. Occasionally, however, a report or rumor comes along that's worth talking about. The latest on iPhone 2 seems to be worth a note. Originally out of TheStreet.com and later circulated by various outlets such as Apple Insider and Gizmodo, a new reports suggests that there is solid information that a new incarnation of the Apple iPhone will be coming to consumers in the first quarter of 2008, and it will include 3G connectivity and will be GPS enabled. According to the report, "people familiar with the production plans" have indicated that a second generation, 3G iPhone is do to roll out early next year. Unfortunately, however, as AppleInsider notes - TheStreet.com has what amounts to no record when it comes to predicting Apple moves. While this doesn't give any of us reason to jump for joy at the prediction, the good news is it can keep us from

UK iPhone Announced on O2, no 3G
2007-09-22 23:19:00
The iPhone was announced in the UK today an Apple press conference held in London at the Regent St. Apple store. Though there was a great deal of speculation as to what iPhone would be announced, the reality is that folks in the UK are getting the same version of the iPhone that was released earlier this year in the United States. The most anticipated news was of course whether the UK folks would be getting their hands on v2 of the iPhone - one with 3G capabilities. The answer, as mentioned above, is no. As many expected, due to limitations caused by high battery usage of 3G chips, Apple can't yet justify a 3G version of the iPhone at this time. In the video below, taken at the event by the folks at SlashGear.com, Steve Jobs explains the logic behind the no-3G decision. The other eagerly awaited piece of news at the event was who the carrier or carriers for the iPhone would be in the UK, another heavily speculated topic. As it turns out, the iPhone will be sold exclusively on O2 in

iPhone in France on November 29th Sans 3G
2007-09-21 12:01:00
Everyone expects the first iPhone to be sold in Europe this Tuesday, September 18th, at the Apple press conference being held at London's Regent Street Apple Store. There have also been rumors that the iPhone will be released in Germany on November 12th. The latest in Euro-iPhone news suggests that the iPhone may be available in France as of November 29th, but perhaps not exactly how our neighbors across the sea had hoped.According to French technology blog TechCrunch, the iPhone will be available in France on November 29th, but with two very important omissions. Despite rumors that the UK iPhone expected this week would be 3G, TechCrunch's source indicates that the French iPhone will not be 3G, and will instead be the same EDGE model sold in the US. This may help squash the hopes of UK residents whose fingers were crossed for the 3G announcement to be made Tuesday. TechCrunch also states that the French iPhone will be ofference exclusively through Orange, who will not be offering Fr

Nokia 7500 Prism
2007-09-16 10:25:00
We got our first glimpse of the Nokia 7500 Prism last month, when the handset was announced by Nokia China. As ever, the Nokia 7000 series are for "fashion phones", and the Nokia 7500 (and its sibling the 7900) certainly fit into that category. The unusual angular design and repeated triangular pattern across the Nokia 7500 may not be to everyone's taste.. but it is certainly a highly distinctive handset and one that's pretty decently specified too. Before we look at the technical specifications, it's worth taking a closer look at the Nokia 7500's design detailing. Nokia have gone to some effort to make sure that the whole phone continues the same theme, including the 7500's user interface. This overall look is sure to polarised opinion, but generally speaking these designs sell well (even the truly awful Nokia 7260).Unlike some of Nokia's past fashion phones, the Nokia 7500 is pretty well specified. It has a 240x320 pixel display in 16 million colours, a 2 megapixel camera with fl

Two New Stylish LG EV-DO Mobile Phones Released
2007-09-15 10:53:00
LG has just released two more evolved handsets, packed with support for EV-DO Rev A (Evolution-Data Optimized). LG LH2000 and SPH-W3150 are two powerful devices that manage to handle a wide variety of multimedia files and bring the best of entertainment to its user. These two latest mobile phonescoming from LG are among the most evolved ones that this company has to bring. Unfortunately, there are little chances of them breaking out of Korea boundaries, for a global release. It's a shame, as these devices might have had chances for being successful in other countries too.LG LH2000 has a 2.2 inch LCD screen, although an even larger one would have been great. The phone is great for placing video calls and also supports T-DMB technology. This means that it is capable of bringing mobile TV services for the users of these handsets and could have done even better with a larger display. The technology is used mainly in Korea, which gives some reason why the handset has not been put out for a
