Choosing the Right Lawyer; Ensure your interests are best represented
2007-08-28 20:48:42
My recent posts have concerned what makes a good lawyer, an exceptional one and one that is financially successful but morally dubious.  This post concerns how to find a lawyer that will represent your best interests, and how to sort the gems from the rest of the shiny crowd of lawyers. There are many excellent articles online concerning choosing a lawyer, they identify many different points to look for, including; Houston DWI Attorneys - Choosing the Right Lawyer Mistakes To Avoid Before You Hire A Lawyer and Interviewing A Lawyer All these techniques concern different methods and things to keep in mind, concerning qualifications, specialities and other technical aspects that can differ between jurisdictions.  Personality, approach and style are not their primary focus.  This article is aimed at giving you a framework, wherever you are finding someone who is qualified, wiling and able to take on your case and represent you to the extent you want to be represente

Top Ten Qualities of Rich, Successful but not Amazing Lawyers
2007-08-26 06:25:10
My last post concerned what actually makes an outstanding lawyer.  These were people who excel, not just at the law but everything it takes to be an excellent legal professional.  What I would like to do is highlight the difference between some "successful" lawyers and the ones that are truly great.  This difference is obvious when showing the properties that one has if you are not an outstanding attorney but one who appears successful compared to the amazing ones.  This proves that the the amount of money they earn and the reputation they may have does not indicate how well they are actually doing their jobs. If, introspectively you see someone that is exhibiting some or all of these qualities then it is not too late for them to change, it is often said that acknowledging the problem is half the battle.   Inefficiency, the ability to send 3 letters when 1 will do. Perseverance, will continually bill for more hours than could possibly have been

Assuming you can already program to a reasonable proficiency in one language, this is not as hard as it first sounds.  I have developed a methodology that helps me learn the majority of the features in the shortest possible time.  These will enable you to do more than write "Hello World" and should be enough to get whatever job you need to get done, done! 1. Search Use your favorite search engine and look for articles about your new language.   Don’t look for tutorials just yet.  You are searching for a general understanding of how your language looks and how to perform basic tasks.  Learn How to: Save Strings into Variables Save Numbers into Variables Test for conditions to be true or false How to do basic mathematics (+-/* mod) Create Loops Create Functions that return data Create Functions that do not return data (subroutines) Enumerate through a list

How to get what you want by negotiating
2007-08-21 01:44:23
Chances are that you will be involved in negotiating an agreement with someone in the near future. The form these negotiations may take are many and varied but all have the same common elements, that people are involved.  Many people have trouble dealing with other people when the subject matter is as personal as it is in a negotiation, some get angry, others cave in and many want to win at all costs.  Not only will this not help you get what you want, but you may be much worse off after the negotiation than before. This guide will guide you through what your style is, how to appreciate what the other people want from negotiations and how to make the outcome come out in your favor.           Some may be called to negotiate with: Over a legal dispute When dealing with members of the public With your neighbors When there are differences of opinion at work with colleagues. With the government With your friends, or ex-friends When purchasing som

9 Ways to Win At Life Through Time Management
2007-08-18 08:27:50
Everyone has things that they want to get done.  It is a constant gripe that they do not have enough time to do it.  Through these simple steps you will be able to get through your daily tasks with time to spare to focus on the bigger picture. I have been away without Internet for some days, but this was not necessarily as bad as it may seem.  I have now had more time to think about things (as opposed to browsing) and will be sharing my insights over the next few days. One of the critical things in managing my blogging, university studies and work is to ensure that I am able to give my full attention to each.  At the same time I need to do so without: going crazy; becoming an insomniac and missing fun.  The key to do this is not necessarily working harder but working smarter.  I have had discussions with many people on this, that you can work hard, but not efficiently - meaning that your hard work although respected is not the best thing you can

Recruiters, Injecting Talent into the Open Source World - hopefully
2007-08-13 06:46:10
The open source community is just that in many respects, a community.  There are many people interacting on a regular basis swapping work and ideas for a common purpose.  To resemble a true community however they need to borrow from the real world, there is a need for an open source Job Agency. Job advertising is a major online business, millions of people change their professions and seek out new horizons all with the help of recruiters.  These recruiters are increasing their online presence, enabling people in Brisbane Australia to browse jobs in New York and vice versa, they also give quick responses for immediate needs and to give an easy environment for those keen for new work to find something that is uniquely suited for them.  This flexibility seems to help matching the right individual to the right employer.  Matching skills with opportunity is very important when there is real money involved in transactions, as the wrong mistake can prove to be very co

1001 Lists To Read Before You Die
2007-08-11 02:34:56
There are many lists in the blogosphere.  These are as diverse as the people who write them.  From inspirational to the bizzare most of them are entertaining reading. They are generally quick to read, clear and concise and enlighten the reader to something they may not have known anything about beforehand. I had been collecting lists of various things for some time. Recently when I moved my bookmarks onto del.icio.us I noticed how many of the things I was saving were in list form. Inspired by "1001 Places To See Before You Die" I have constructed a list of 1001 lists that are interesting, enlightening, funny, informative, engaging or inspiring. I have tried to spread around the sources of my lists, I also disclose that I am receiving no money for anything advertised on any of the sites in this list.  These lists have been checked for duplicates and where possible have sourced the orginal site for the list. It is hard sometimes to find this author with

The Top 50 Lightweight Firefox Add-Ons. Powerful plugins and extensions that will not kill your computer
2007-09-02 17:29:08
Firefox is an Open-Source Internet browser that is fast, easy to use and my favorite extremely customizable. I am someone who loves being in control, being able to change my browsing experience to be faster, easier to use, more secure and giving control what other people can observe about your activities is something that really appeals to me. After trying many different add-ons I have found that some can consume vast amounts of either processor or RAM, leading to an experience which is not fun.  Using a process of trial and error I have cut down the list of extensions that I use to 50, lightweight ones that deliver me an experience that I am very comfortable with.  There are other extensions that can perform the same things that these ones can, but these I know (as I use them for hours each day) will be fast and reliable.  Even running these on "sub-par" machines these will only enhance your browsing experience. I have compiled this list from extensions I actu

How to Gain the Attention of A-List Bloggers; 50 Ways to get a Celebrity Writer To Notice You
2007-09-26 07:46:18
Thankyou for all the feedback from my last post - Why You Should Want an A-List Blogger to Notice You - Many of the ideas I was sent are incorporated in this post, and others may be a separate venture I will start in the coming months. As my previous post indicated blogging is something where the authors generally want to be noticed and build a community around their ideas. Gaining the exposure required to have people look at and continue subscribing to your site is something that is difficult. If your true aim for your site is recognition, not fleeting approval from things like the digg effect, then you can either fluke your way to success, rely on the advice on “how to blog” blogs or let someone who has successfully acheived yoru aims give you constructive criticism. There are no learners plates on blogs and nothing to tell people you want their advice and even getting noticed is hard. The purpose of this post is to outline as many different ways possible to gain the atte

Why You Should Want to Get Noticed by an A-List Blogger
2007-09-20 06:42:33
Influence is not all that an a-list blogger has that is valuable to an aspiring blogger like myself. I started blogging to meet people, encourage discussion, write about things that interest me and belong to a community. After attempting to blog for some time I have made the following observations: It is very lonely having a blog with no traffic It is hard to write when you do not know what people want to read It is hard to be happy with a post if you do not feel you should be happy with it It would be nice to have at least one RSS subscriber that is not yourself The only tips that people share on their posts are ones that they often break themselves The purpose of blogging about a niche is to only blog about that niche, but defining a niche is something only those who have done it before can do. The more one looks at ones Alexa rank the less people want to visit your site. All the hard work in writing posts is lost when you decide to delete them because you perceive them as being off

20 Sure-Fire Ways to Stop Hiccups
2007-09-16 21:49:23
In the newer theme of this blog, covering technology, programming, law and anything that is relevant to me, today I am suffering from my first bout of hiccups in years.  These are not just polite, these are violent, body heaving, mind distracting monster hiccups. As I write this I have not found a cure for the hiccups that has worked for me, but have been conducting research on how to stop them, and thought I would share with my valued readers the research I have done and the methods I have tried. Please note, I am not a doctor, please try the below techniques at your own If you ever find yourself in this position you will know how I am feeling.  If you appreciate this article please share it or subscribe to my feed. 1. Hold Your Breath This used to work for me, better than any other options.  Simply breathe in, and hold your breath for as long as possible.  (not too long so you pass out) Hopefully your hiccups should be cured and you do not need to go any further.

Announcing changes to the way that this blog is going to operate in the future
2007-09-08 06:52:23
I started blogging as I was inspired that I could write quality articles that people would enjoy reading.I thought that I would have my own style and I would be able to meet new people and exchange ideas. Unfortunately I have become distracted with many other areas and aspects of blogging that I did not even realize existed when I first started this adventure.I temporarily became obsessed that everything in this blog had to be of a similar style, length, quality and be strictly on the topics that I mention in my blurb.I was also getting too focused on things like conversion rates for advertising, alexa ranking, unique visitors and people subscribing to my feed. I have found that I am interested in much more than what I have listed and also have many probing questions on other areas incidental to what I am doing personally, professionally and online that I feel need to be discussed. What I have decided to do is to write about whatever is important or interesting as it comes up.Now gener

Why Don’t Modern Applications Use Embedded Databases?
2007-12-13 05:34:32
I use many different applications. I like using programs dedicated for one purpose, rather than the sort who uses a few applications to do many different things.  The Major reason I change from one app to another that I use is that they are either processor, disk or memory intensive.  What I have noticed is [...]

Politics: When you get what you did not pay for
2007-12-08 07:40:40
One of the problems that I have seen lately is that not all leaders stay for the full term, when there is nothing left to achieve, like an elite athlete retiring after they have all the records then there is a void. Other leadership transitions can occur through party room battles, death, illness or similar; the fact is that a leader that did not face the election is the leader of the government. This individual then sets their own policies, agendas and ideas and starts to put them into motion. This assumption of power is not a problem if one assumes that each politician is only there to look after their own electorates, and because of this then if the majority of electorates support the new leader then everything is all good. If however you see the government as being affirmed and t

Personalize Your Email
2007-11-06 06:05:12
.| Type |. Although people like me have had hotmail email addresses for over ten years, it does not mean that using this address in the workplace is either credible or professional. I do not think that using a common, free email looks good on a resume to a top tier law firm. Nor does sending emails to prospective clients or even new social networking associates with an email that is littered with ads seem an approach that means that people will take you seriously. Using the email address provided to you by your Internet Service provider does not look much better (In Australia the ominous bigpond.com.au address prevails) and both of these have the disadvantage that the services could end at any time. I have found a solution (I have not been paid for this) that will provide yo

Mind Mapping; A Valuable Tool
2007-11-01 07:16:06
What is Mind mapping? Mind mapping is method of brainstorming that uses visual cues for putting thoughts onto paper. This produces an easy to read result that is visual, fun, fast and creative. Many different ideas and unexpected connections can be easily drawn limiting words and increasing understanding. A picture, idea or central word is used to begin with, branches are then drawn out, free associations and other words are added as they appear in one's brain as they arise in the course of thinking about or studying the topic. From these nodes, further branches are drawn. This can create a web like image, ideas can further be linked via arrows - In a short period of time many connections can be drawn for a single word.

Smilies & Emoticon Etiquette - Readers Not Getting The Message
2007-10-29 07:29:06
When you use a smiley or emoticon - do people really know what you are saying? There seem to be many problems in communication / conveying mesasges that arise because of the lack of consistency in the use of smilies and emoticons. I propose that there needs to be a standard usage across the board.
