Trying to Find a Peaceful Song To Sing When Everything Goes Wrong 2007-09-21 13:07:28 It’s sad to say, but a Ryan Adams show is a big gamble these days. You can really never tell what you’re gonna get. It could start off really strong and then he could have a minor meltdown and storm off stage. As much as I love the guy, he sure can piss me off sometimes. The first time I saw him, he was just starting to tour for the Cold Roses album. That night in Toronto was one of those bad nights. Ryan & the Cardinals came on stage, launched into this new song, I hadn’t heard called “Magnolia Mountain”. Wow. It looked like we were on our way to a mindblowing show. Well, shortly after that, Ryan finished his first bottle of wine. Then some aborted songs followed, lots of sound problems and tuning, then bitching at the audience (if you are a fan of Ryan’s this must sound very familiar). Although, through the lows, he could still bust out a great tune, it wasn’t enough to salvage the night. So that was my introduction to R Read more:Everything

Osheaga 2007 Is Old News 2007-09-11 11:04:08 The Osheaga weekend is over, the dust has cleared, and there were no cheese fights. I was so lucky to have scored free tickets for the Saturday show, my day of choice of the 2 (Thanks again Nancy). We got there during the start of The Editors set, they were my favorites of the day. I love their energy and their raw power. Next up, was the The Veils. The Veils, according to my Osheaga itinerary are from Auckland, New Zealand. These guys held their own, and are worthy of checking out. “Nux Vomica” is the name of their new album, and Brooklyn Vegan has a lot more to say about them here.
Back over to the main stage to check out Blonde Redhead. I love Kazu Makino’s voice, she has such a different style that works so well with the rest of the band. Their setlist was mostly tracks from their new album “23″, my only complaint was that Kazu’s perfectly soft voice was a little low in the mix, and the guitar was too high (see common problem for sound engineers) Read more:Old News
Trendwhore’s Acoustic Hour Pt. 1 - Todd Snider 2007-09-09 22:25:36 This summer in Ottawa, we were treated to a mind-blowing Bluesfest lineup that included amazing acts such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison & The White Stripes. Naturally, I was very eager to see these acts, but at the same time, there were numerous artists, unknown to me, that I wanted to check out. At the top of this list was Todd Snider. I had heard talk of him for years. Being a Dylan nut, frequenting message boards, you get to know a lot of people’s favourite songwriters, and because of this I was introduced to many new artists. However, sometimes I was so busy listening to Dylan, some artists went under the table in my “listen to at some point in your life” pile. And here sat Todd. I always knew I’d get around to him someday, but it took seeing him live to hurry my ass up.
To get an idea of his sound, picture John Prine and Robert Earl Keen, now put them in a blender and add a dash of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark (The grandfathers of this good shit w Read more:Acoustic
When You Die, You Can Stand Up For Me 2007-08-29 23:39:48 The Wolf Parade long weekend is over. I attended the last show on Monday, however forgot to load my memory card into my camera and thus I have nothing from Mondays show, but a wise man once said something like ‘….don’t be sad, 3 out of 4 ain’t bad’. Anyway, as most of you know by now, the current set list contains a lot of new material which can sometimes be bad news for some fans, this was not the case. Upon hearing Stevie, Language City and Fine Young Cannibals at Fridays show my anticipation for the new album rose ten fold.
More review and footage if you…….

But Nobody Cares When It Gets In Their Hair 2007-09-29 17:03:36 This will be a quick post. I attended the Andrew Bird show last Wednesday at Le Tulipe. Andrew’s vocals were strong, and the show was phenomenal, even though I wasn’t in the mood to be there. Here is the show, sans the encore. ryantheduke and I are heading to Beirut, expect that show up here tomorrow. As for the Okkervil River videos, don’t hold your breath, they are pretty dark and will need some touching up.

But It’s Just A Sweet, Sweet Fantasy, Baby 2007-10-08 21:54:59 Thursday night marked the opening day of the Pop Montreal festival and was my second time seeing Owen Pallett’s, Final Fantasy. The first was in the tiny Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec, and that was the smallest venue I’ve ever been in with about 150 people. This time, it was at a much larger venue, The Ukrainian Federation in Montreal, it was here I saw the Arcade Fire earlier in the year, but that is another story. Aside from the size of the venue and the set list, the 2 shows were the same, stellar! Stephanie Comilangs performs an intricate slide show on an over head projector that accompanies the songs and the show perfectly. Owen Pallet has the uncanny ability to make his shows very intimate. During the Wakefield show he did a great cover of Bloc Party’s “Modern Love”, last night he chose to do an odd, but great rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy”. I didn’t know the names to some of the songs, if you know please post th Read more:Sweet

I Was In The Drop D Metal Band We Called Requiem 2007-10-18 01:19:26 The last 2 days have been a roaring success for Trendwhore, we were mentioned in Spin, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and Pitchfork. ABC emailed for permission to use our video footage on a program called “What’s The Buzz”, how cool is that? Well, now that the hype is over, its back to doing what we do best, poorly written reviews and shaky footage. Today I have coverage from the Spoon show at Le National last night. They were great, but I believe in my heart of hearts the show could have been better. Britt Daniel mentions that this wasn’t their best show before coming out for the encore, however the crowd were hot all night. The set list was a good mix of their back catalog (which is massive) with their new. I was crossing my fingers for “Japanese Cigarette Case” and “Sister Jack” but no dice. My girlfriend had a blast and noticed that most songs (especially the new) where played much faster live (see “The Underdog” and &ldquo Read more:Metal

So Now We’re Drownin’ In Birthday Cakes 2007-10-29 09:01:02 I had a really great weekend (for those wondering). I celebrated my 25th year of being alive. Shit, I’m old. OK, enough thinking about that, today I have an old show from my archives. Modest Mouse, live at the Metropolis back in April (04.25.2007 to be exact). Man Man opened that night, but unfortunately I only got to catch the last song of their set. This tour is still going across North America (with Love As Laughter).
This was back in the day of my 1Gb card so I had to pick and choose songs (those where hard times). I remember that this show didn’t have the great acoustics I had come to expect of Metropolis shows. I also remember that Johnny Marr didn’t bring much to the show, except maybe some out of key backing vocals. However, Dan Boeckner (of Wolf Parade) came out played during Dramamine which made the show, in my opinion.

Ocean Breathes Salty

The Highway Is Alive Tonight 2007-10-24 18:42:10 My concert schedule has cleared up a little bit, and truthfully, it’s a welcome break. There’s nothing I’d rather spend my money on, but well, I need money to spend on it. So, to entertain you, our lovely oink-less readers looking for new places to download high quality material, I have dipped into my archives. I’ve been on a steady diet of Bruce since the show last weekend, and though the show was mind-blowing, I keep hearing friends talk about how good his tours were “back in the day”. Which got me thinking about my favourite tours of all time… Now, most of my list would be dominated by Dylan (’66, ‘75, ‘80, Fall ‘02), but if those were my top 4, Bruce would fit in the top 5 with his Ghost of Tom Joad Tour, which spanned from ‘95 to ‘97. These shows were mostly all solo Bruce, and the tour produced some of the finest audience recordings I have ever heard, and this one must be at the top of the list. Read more:Alive

I’ve Been A Better Lover With Your Mother 2007-11-04 22:44:35 I just picked up tickets for the Attack In Black and Ladyhawk show at Sala Rossa on November 22nd. This got me to thinking of the first time I saw Ladyhawk when they opened for Tapes ‘n Tapes at Le National back when the weather was warmer. Only 45 people got there early early enough to see their opening set. Their loss! They got such a great ‘garage band’ sound (similar to Dinosaur Jr.) which I can’t get enough of. Their debut record is solid, so do yourself a favor and pick up tickets to see them!
Back to the Tapes ‘n Tapes, some news spread regarding the new album that ryantheduke passed along from an email he got from their mailing list,
it’s been a while since we’ve had any news for you. but fear not, all is well with us. and now we have some glorious news to share….we’ve finished recording our next album! yep, you heard right. it’s in the can. it’s done. fin. we spent about 3 weeks out in upstate new york rec
He Starts To Speak And Then He Goes To Pieces 2007-11-12 20:13:24 Hey, you little trendites. Yeah, yeah, the ghost of me lingers. School is brutal this term and brock has thankfully picked up my slack and kept the site going. Many thanks to him.
Last month, in the midst of many smaller club shows, My girlfriend and I took a one day trip with some friends to Albany to catch the Elvis Costello/Bob Dylan show. Amos Lee actually opened the show, but after hearing him several times on a Dylan tour in ‘05, I knew to stay away for fear of falling asleep.
Let me start off by saying that Dylan was just shit that night. I have seen the old man over 20 times now, so I have grounds to say that. Of all those shows, he has only disappointed on a couple of nights, but they have all been recently. Back in ‘02, when my Dylan tour days started, he was on fire. Back then he really fed off his amazing band, which consisted of Larry Campbell, Charlie Sexton, Tony Garnier and George Receli. That was his best touring band since.. The Band! However, they
It’s Looking Like A Limb Torn Off 2007-11-11 12:21:46 I was a reading concert review of Band Of Horses at Lee’s Palace back in 2006. The review was not in their favor. The reviewer had two issues with the performance, the first being that there wasn’t enough “ferocity” displayed by BOH and that the opener wasn’t very inspiring. Before the show at Le Tulipe last week I looked up the word “ferocity” so I could see if I understand where the review was coming from. Ferocity is defined on dictionary.com as ‘a ferocious quality or state; savage fierceness’. I’m a fan of Band of Horses but that noun should be saved for bands in the same genre as Slayer. As for an inspiring opener, The Drones were that and so much more. Gareth Liddiard’s stage style similar to that of Dan Boeckner or Joe Strummer. However, the rest of The Drones lived up to their name, and could have used some on stage ferocity! I recommend The Drones, they are my new favorite Australian band (take that Men At Work
