Lennon piano will be part of peace exhibit
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The piano John Lennon used to compose his 1971 song Imagine will be part of an anti-war photographic exhibition in Dallas, Tex.The simple upright model is owned by British pop singer George Michael, who is lending it to the exhibition at the Goss Gallery. The showing, which focuses on three war-torn regions — Vietnam, Beirut and Afghanistan — features the work of renowned war photographer Don McCullin. The gallery is owned by the Michael's partner, Kenny Goss. "What better place is there to reiterate how important peace is?" said Goss, who has been with the former frontman for 1980s band Wham! for 11 years. "Dallas is President George Bush's home. It's a great place to remind people how important it is that we find peace" Michael bought the piano for more than $2 million at an auction in 2000. It has never left the United Kingdom.Imagine has been adopted as an anthem for peace and was included in Lennon's 1971 album bearing the same name. The song has been descri

The Beatles Love - Nothing Is Real
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Beatles predicted it when they ventured into Pepperland in 1968, and now it has come true. Nothing Is Real, and you'll never hear the Beatles the same again.Four tracks from the new Beatles Love album, songs from the soundtrack of the Beatles Love show in Las Vegas, are now available to hear at the official Beatles web site, beatles.com, and they're guaranteed to raise a smile.Strawberry Fields, the first track in the preview, starts off with John Lennon's early voice and guitar demo for the song (with a John count-in I've never heard before). At the first chorus, it transitions to the beautiful and haunting Strawberry Fields studio take one, but to my ears the vocal continues to be the earlier demo, and it's wonderful to hear take one of the song married to this different vocal. As the song transitions to the more raucous take 2, the demo vocal continues throughout. As the songs gets into the loud rhythmic drumming section, it seamlessly transitions into many different tracks

Playboy Releases New Volume of Interviews
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Playboy dips into the vault and comes out with some gems from past issues--a new book of interviews, entitled Larger than Life. Actually, it's the 40th anniversary of the Playboy interview, and FBLA chatted with editor Stephen Randall about the book. Randall won't admit to having a favorite in this volume, which includes interviews with the Beatles, two with Bob Dylan, Mae West, Frank Sinatra, and some other legends. (We got him to confess a fascination with Sinatra.) He's not worried about leaving anyone out, as he's got more planned--Movers and Shakers and The Comedians are coming up next. Playboy has a unique niche in the world of celebrity journalism--they can get virtually anyone the editors want, and they ask for a sizeable commitment of time--7 to 8 hours, according to Randall, as well follow-ups. Randall claims to not want to do the interviewing himself, saying "If journalists live vicariously through the people they meet and cover, then I live vicariously through the

"Black smoke was pouring out the back door. It looked like a kitchen fire."About 10 to 12 people were in the restaurant at the time.Chuck Penn, a spokesman with Dominion Virginia Power, sa

Ex-Beatle's been marching to his own drum
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pete Best never completely shed the job he lost in 1962. That's what happens when you're history's only living ex-Beatle.''Liverpool is my hometown,'' he said recently. ``The people of my generation were aware of all that happened -- the subterfuge, the heartache. It was all well-chronicled.''What happened was that in August 1962, the Beatles unceremoniously sacked Best and replaced him with drummer Ringo Starr. Two months later, Love Me Do hit the Top 20 in Britain, and the Beatles were off on their mind-blowing voyage. And Best, who was part of the band's founding years (including its infamous tours in Hamburg, Germany), became a tragic bystander to it all.''The hardest part was when Love Me Do went into the English charts,'' he said. ``We always knew once we had success on the English charts, we were on our way.''More than 44 years later, Best insists that things worked out just fine. He got married, raised a family, earned his pension after 20 years in the civil serv

Olivia Harrison feeling the 'Love'
1970-01-01 00:59:59
VANCOUVER -- This time of year is tough on Olivia Harrison . Her husband, former Beatle George Harrison, passed away on Nov. 29 five years ago, and Dec. 8 will mark the 26th anniversary of John Lennon's death."You can't avoid those dates, you just can't," she says, her voice quiet on the other end of the phone. "I'm getting ready for that again."But this year, Harrison has a magic antidote up her sleeve -- the release of Love, an album of newly remixed Beatles songs, created for a Cirque du Soleil production with the same name."I love the fact there's billboards all over the world with Love on them. I think that's the biggest coup of all," she says, her pleasure bubbling over into full-throated laughter."As George said, everything they sang about, you know, the main theme was love," she adds, launching into a quote of George's song "Within You Without You": "With our love we can change the world, if they only knew."The Love album was produced by the Beatles' original producer Ge

The Beatles hit No. 1 on charts
1970-01-01 00:59:59
It seems Beatlemania is still alive and well in Canada, as the Fab Four's latest compilation "LOVE" hit the top spot in the land this week."LOVE," which remixes and remasters 26 of the group's songs, debuted at No. 1 on sales of 34,000 copies, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. It marks the second first-place debut for the Liverpool legends in the SoundScan era. The compilation "Beatles 1" checked in at No. 1 back in November of 2000 with sales of 54,000.The group's achievement is even more impressive when you consider that the week's album chart includes six other debuts in the Canadian top 10 -- including four new entries landing in the first four chart positions.Aside from The Beatles' debut at No. 1, Il Divo's third album "Siempre" premiered at No. 2 on sales of 32,000. Lennon piano makes appearance at JFK site
1970-01-01 00:59:59
DALLAS (Reuters) - The piano on which the late John Lennon composed his famous anti-war song "Imagine" made an odd appearance on Wednesday at the site where President John F. Kennedy was gunned down, competing for attention with conspiracy buffs on the 43rd anniversary of the assassination. The plain-looking brown piano has been brought to America for exhibits by British pop star George Michael and his partner Kenny Goss. Michael bought it in 2000 at an auction for 1.45 million British pounds, which is today worth $2.78 million."George and Kenny are very focused on world peace and they wanted to bring the piano here as a message of peace at this iconic site," said Barbara Buzzell, spokeswoman for the Goss Gallery in Dallas, where the piano goes on display next month. The piano spent the morning covered in canvas at the so-called "grassy knoll," where many conspiracy theorists are convinced at least one unknown shooter fired the shots that killed Kennedy as his motorcade swept past. 1970-01-01 00:59:59
Sometime during April Polydor released a Tony Sheridan EP in France called Mr. Twist containing the songs 'My Bonnie', 'The Saints', 'Why' and 'Cry For A Shadow'. John and George thus became the first two members to get one of their own compositions in the shops.10th: Stuart Sutcliffe died of a brain haemorrhage. Astrid found him on the stairs and rushed him to hospital, but he passed away in the ambulance. He was just twenty-two years old. She said: "He'd been having painful headaches for weeks and several top specialists examined him, but the answer always came back the same, 'We can find nothing wrong.' A brain tumour was suspected, but a long series of X-ray tests showed nothing. The stabbing pains got so bad that he had to have morphine to deaden the pain. Sometimes he'd get up and be walking around, laughing and talking as though nothing was wrong. Then he'd suddenly clutch his head and groan with pain. I found him on the bed, unconscious, deadly white, and breathi
