The Beatles hit No. 1 on charts
2006-12-01 17:52:00
It seems Beatlemania is still alive and well in Canada, as the Fab Four's latest compilation "LOVE" hit the top spot in the land this week. "LOVE," which remixes and remasters 26 of the group's songs, debuted at No. 1 on sales of 34,000 copies, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. It marks the second first-place debut for the Liverpool legends in the SoundScan era. The compilation "Beatles 1" checked in at No. 1 back in November of 2000 with sales of 54,000. The group's achievement is even more impressive when you consider that the week's album chart includes six other debuts in the Canadian top 10 -- including four new entries landing in the first four chart positions. Aside from The Beatles' debut at No. 1, Il Divo's third album "Siempre" premiered at No. 2 on sales of 32,000. U2's latest hits package "U218 Singles" (19,000) finished its first week of release at No. 3, followed by Rock Star Supernova's self-titled debut at No. 4. The movement up top forced Josh

Courtney Love: Kurt Cobain Wasn't the One
2006-11-26 17:11:00
Courtney Love says Kurt Cobain wasn't the love of her life. The 'Hole' singer described the late Nirvana frontman - the father of her 12-year-old daughter Frances Bean, who she was married to for two years - as "the best friend I ever had" but admits he could be mistrusting and hostile. She told POP magazine: "I think he did love me. But when you're dealing with someone who is that brilliant but is tortured you have to put up with a lot of misanthropic s**t." Love - who has previously drug and drink addictions - claims her one true love was actor Ed Norton. She explained: "He's been more of a daddy to Frances than Kurt ever was." The 42-year-old rocker appears in a series of raunchy semi-nude photographs in the latest edition of the magazine. However, Katie Grand, the editor-in-chief of POP, insists that is not what was initially intended. She said: "We didn't plan the shoot to be raunchy - we wanted to put her in couture - but she's such a big presence. In a couture dress sh

Possible Blur reunion in the works?
2006-11-25 18:27:00
Former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon has admitted he would consider playing with Blur again. As the ongoing saga of his departure from the Britpop stars continues, three years after he left the band, Coxon appears to be open to a possible reconciliation. Speaking in a new interview, he was responding to recent comments made by bass player Alex James, who suggested the group wanted to make one more album with Coxon. Coxon admitted to having little contact with ex-bandmates Damon Albarn and Dave Rowntree, although he does remain close to James. "Alex will always be my friend. I guess they all will be in some way, but it's somewhat strange," he said. Meanwhile, Coxon told Pitchfork he would certainly not rule out the idea if he was asked. "I haven't been approached about it. I think about it: Would it be fun? Would it be a bit too scary? What would the dynamic be in a studio? Would I have to do promotion? Would I tour? You know, it's a lot of thinking. "So I guess I still mull around

2006-11-25 18:20:00
The Stooges have complete d their first new album in more than three decades, Iggy Pop has confirmed. The legendary punk icons recorded the LP with Steve Albini in Chicago this year, and it is now scheduled for release in March 2007. Speaking about their first new material in 33 years, Iggy said: "The one thing that kind of amazes me is that it sounds like us. But it doesn't sound quite like Fun House, Raw Power, or our first one. You put it on, and right away, you'd know, well, that's them. There they go." Among the 16 tracks set for inclusion on the album, which will be mixed in London next month, are "The Weirdness," "You Can't Have Friends," "ATM," and "Trollin'," reports Billboard. Ono does not forgive Lennon's killer
2006-12-10 18:01:00
Yoko Ono has appealed to people across the world to mark the anniversary of John Lennon 's assassination today by healing the world. The widow of the former Beatle has issued a lengthy statement calling for peace and forgive ness for all, 26 years after Lennon was shot dead in New York. Ono, who admits she still cannot forgive Mark David Chapman for killing her husband, tells victims of violence across the world that "your loss is our loss." The statement includes the following excerpts: "Every year on this day I hear from many from all over the world who remember my husband, John Lennon, and his message of peace. They tell me they are thinking of John on this day and how he was shot and killed at the prime of life, at age 40, when he had so much life ahead of him. Thank you for your undying love for John and also for your concern for me on this tragic anniversary. "This year, though, on December 8th, while we remember John, I would also like us to focus on sending the following message

Axl says new Guns N' Roses album will be out in March
2006-12-15 17:57:00
The new Guns N' Roses album Chinese Democracy will be released in March 2007, according to Axl Rose. Rose claims he will finally unveil the chronically long-awaited LP in the spring, around 10years after it was first mooted. In an online posting, the Guns singer admitted there had been a series of "obstacles" delaying the LP, but seems certain that it will now finally emerge. Speaking yesterday, he said: "To say the making of this album has been an unbearably long and incomprehensible journey would be an understatement." However, Rose continued: "It takes approximately eight weeks for an album to hit the shelves once it has been turned in to the record company. "That being said this is not a promise, a lie or a guarantee, but we do wish to announce a tentative release date of March 6. This is the first time we have done this publicly for this album. "Any and all other dates have been made up by others for their own reasons. We would like to assure the fans that though tentative, ev

Mariah Carey sues porn star
2006-12-12 17:51:00
Mariah Carey is threatening to sue a porn star called Mary Carey, if she pursues plans to trademark her name. The pop icon is understood to be concerned her fans will mix the two up and is seeking legal advice over how she can block her erotic rival. Originally born Mary Cook and the star of films such as Double Air Bags 11 and Boobsville Sorority Girls, Mary Carey has dismissed the action. She received a letter from Mariah's legal team in October objecting to her plan to trademark the name, which would also span audio and visual recordings, reports Undercover. At the time, Mariah's lawyer Robert Becker insisted: "Confusion between your client and her Mary Carey trademark and our client and its Mariah Carey trademark is therefore likely." But Mary Carey says she will fight the legal challenge, commenting: "I'm ready to battle Mariah over this because I've been Mary Carey for a long time." Her lawyer, David Beichtman, backed his client, commenting: "My first thought was, does Mar

U2 wins lawsuit over band memorabilia
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Irish rock band U2 emerged victorious Wednesday in a court battle with a former stylist it claimed had taken important memorabilia without permission nearly two decades ago.Lola Cashman had told Dublin's High Court that U2 frontman Bono had given her several items as gifts during U2's Joshua Tree tour in 1987.An iconic Stetson hat, a pair of metal earrings, a green sweat shirt and a pair of black trousers — all worn by Bono — were among the disputed items Cashman claimed she had been given. But after a protracted legal dispute that saw Bono take the witness box, judge Michael Peart ruled that on the balance of probability, the items had not been given to Cashman as she had claimed. The band's lawyer, Paul Sreenan, said U2 would not pursue costs against Cashman for the appeal or for an earlier circuit court action she lost last year.Neither U2 nor Cashman were in court for the ruling.A lower Irish District Court ruling last year rejected Cashman's defense and ordered her to return

Oasis's Noel Gallagher Plays Private Solo Gig In L.A.
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Oasis are releasing a greatest-hits album, Stop The Clocks, later this month, and to celebrate, the band's Noel Gallagher and Gem played a special Los Angeles concert on Thursday, November 9, for listeners of local radio station Indie 103.1 FM. Presumably, Noel's brother/bandmate/occasional nemesis Liam Gallagher couldn't be bothered to make the journey, but given that Noel has always been main songwriter for Oasis (and, some would say, the more vocally talented Gallagher brother), the delighted contest winners in the audience didn't seem to miss Liam at all. After a screening of the Oasis tour documentary Lord Don't Stand Me Down, Noel, Gem, and a percussionist introduced only as "Gary" wordlessly made their way onto the stage of L.A.'s Wadsworth Theater, where they played a stripped-down concert starting with "(It's Good) To Be Free," "Talk Tonight," "Fade Away," and "Cast No Shadow." Noel then dryly quipped, "Let's play another song that's not coming out on our album," dr

Guns N Roses cancels show over booze law
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Guns N' Roses canceled a performance in Portland, Maine this week after being told by state officials that the band could not drink on stage.Inspectors from the state fire marshal's office gave the band the no-drinking order when they came to look over the pyrotechnics planned for Monday's scheduled concert at the Cumberland County Civic Center, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Public Safety Department.McCausland said the band had wanted to drink beer, wine and Jagermeister while performing. A couple of hours after being told that would violate state law, Guns N' Roses canceled its concert, he said. After the cancellation, a band spokesperson blamed fire marshals for "making it impossible for the band to perform their show to the usual high standards that their fans deserve." The press release, however, did not give a specific reason for the pullout.Band leader Axl Rose issued a statement through the Guns N' Roses Web site apologizing to fans in Maine."It was import

Pink Not Sheepish on Wool Issue
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pink is not one to let the wool to be pulled over her eyes—or over her body, for that matter. The pop star has teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to urge a boycott of the Australian wool industry in an effort to halt the controversial practice of "mulesing," in which farmers cut skin from around the rear ends of sheep to prevent fly infestations.Pink, whose real name is Alecia Moore, serves as the narrator of a graphic PETA video about the practice, which shows workers using shears to snip skin folds from the backsides of struggling sheep. The practice is meant to create scar tissue that prevents a painful and often deadly condition called fly strike, but animal advocates argue that there are more humane methods of fighting the condition."The wool trade uses methods so sadistic that it makes you consider clearing your closet of any animal products," Pink states in the video."I am calling on consumers to check labels on sweaters before buying them, and if they'r
