Imagine a Beowulf cluster of raised fairness flags for Saskatchewan 2006-10-23 01:30:38 The Saskatchewan
NDP government is running a new ad campaign to get the Harper Conservative New Government of Canada ™ to imagine what the province would be like if it were given the same money sharing deal as other provinces. In the Canadian Constitution, provinces are entitled to 100% of their resource revenue. Yet for some unexplained reason, Sask has that money count against it in transfer payments. The result is my province loses about $800 million. That’s a lot of fairness
lost.
Last year I wrote about the nonsense the SK NDP govt’ had going with the Raise a Flag for Fairness campaign before the federal NDP helped to trigger a federal election. The website was shown to be a bumbling fraud, which was stupid because it is dirt simple to make it either work properly, or be a simple information repository [no pun intended] with no Web 2.0 interactive features.

Cons' plan for clean air: Warn you when it's bad 2006-10-21 18:03:04 Canada’s New Conservative Government ™ emitted a clean air
approach a couple days ago. On the gc.ca homepage, where we are greeted with sensible sky-blue margins, there’s the centerpiece of the Cons’ clean air pla…approach. It’s a warning system for days that are too smoggy to breathe. The plan is to tell Canadians that they are going to die, or can’t go outside. Brilliant, isn’t it?
“We listened to Canadians. They told us they were concerned about worsening air quality and increasing emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Minister Ambrose. “After more than a decade of inaction on the environment by the previous government,” [we will strongly continue that fine Canadian tradition.]
There’s some hope, but everything is talked about as if nothing will happen until 2010 at the earliest. The following quote is fine, if they’d just get more specific, and actually follow through next year. “It would amend
Ate at Red Lobster 2006-10-20 06:04:24 I rarely eat at an expensive restaurant, so this gets a mention on my blog. Also, Jackie with an ‘ie’, the freezing door greeter there, gets a shout out from J with a sarcastic ‘H’. She’ll know what it means.
I had the Neverending Shrimp which ended after 3 servings, and Ashley had the Ultimate Feast with leftovers of course.

Living on the ice 2006-10-19 17:30:03 The BBC had an interesting story of a reporter trapped with Inuit guides in Canada’s North. I don’t think I like the cold enough to want to live there. There’s something to be said though about living on a food based economy. It makes me wonder what a colony culture on Mars or the Moon would look like with so little to do, but to survive the extreme temperature and isolation.

Conservatives muzzle Garth Turner, their MP - UPDATED 2006-10-18 20:16:11 The Liberals had Carolyn Parish, and the Conservatives
have GarthTurner
. Garth had a blog. His blog is no more (possibly temporarily? -UPDATE a couple hours later the site is back up. It had too many hits for the server claims Garth.).
Here’s the Google cache of his blog. His entire site is blocked when I checked it during lunch after hearing the news of his disciplining.
The Progressive Bloggers are all over this story. It’s significant, not only to bloggers, but to people within a party who are concerned with speaking their mind and representing their constitutents.

This Day in my Blog's History - October 23, 2005 2006-10-23 10:30:48 October 23, 2005
I witnessed the most horrifying reffing I’ve ever seen in football today. Burris actually talked a ref into throwing his flag against the Riders. The resulting disheartening calls sapped any energy from the crowd and then the Riders who flat lined in the second half to lose to Calgary again. I then ate at Viet Thai on Albert St., and watched Crossing Jordan and Criminal Intent.

Reader video tip ; Reader link 2006-10-24 03:25:50 I don’t watch The OC, and in fact it sorta goes against my whole Ban TV initiative to mention this, but a reader wanted me to link to the YouTube ad of an environmentalist on the Fox show. My hunch is they just want to make environmentalists out to be some kind of fruitcakes, fit for ridicule and ignoring. Hopefully that’s not what they are after, or likely to accomplish.

Gormley throws MacKay a bone, and tells Goodale "bad dog!" 2006-10-24 04:52:42 NewsTalkRadio host John Gormley has chosen to back up Peter MacKay
[also a former Progressive Conservative] and called Belinda “flaky” while saying it’s not so important for Peter to say he’s sorry for for calling Belinda a “dog” in the House of Commons.
“…the controversy over what Conservative Peter McKay did or didn't say in the House of Commons about his dog.”
He even seems to dispute that MacKay said what he did, by saying “did or didn’t say”.
“Saskatchewan's Ralph Goodale, says the McKay comments were sexist, they reflect on the entire Conservative government and now even call into question the government of Canada's ability to advocate for the rights of women in Afghanistan.
Note to Ralph Goodale:Â enough overkill on the hyperbole can make people wonder about your judgment.”

Two reasons the NDP won't win in SK 2006-10-24 20:20:49 Our wait times for most “non-emergency” surgeries are an average of 28 WEEKS! That’s about 27 weeks too long for people in pain to be waiting for the fix they need.
And despite $18 Million generated by St. Breiux’s industry, in revenue for the province, the province has decided to fix Highway 219 that will go to a casino, rather than Highway 368 to St. Breiux. The official reason given by the NDP [according to CJME.com] is that there are “not enough people” to make the critical highway worth fixing. This is a slap in the face to the people of St. Breiux, because they too have offered to contribute directly to the highway repair, yet the province went with the other similar offer for highway 219.
I’m waiting for the NDP to claim the same nonsense regarding Highway 358 to Wood Mountain and the Whitemud kaolin mine. They’ll tell the community that there aren’t enough people in the region to make it worth fixing the highway, even though
Elizabeth May - Green Party Leader - interviewed in London 2006-10-29 19:58:13 The GreenParty
is about “effective political change, not partisan political power,” said Elizabeth
May the leader of the Green Party
of Canada, to Wayne Chu from ProgressiveBloggers.ca who conducted the video interview.
It’s unlikely that a Blogging Tory will produce a similar video with the Conservative candidate, given Stephen Harper’s order for her to have a short leash. And no, that’s not a dog joke, it’s just an expression.

Bush's Martial Law Bill Signed ; Daylight Time replay 2006-10-29 13:26:08 Slashdot has some interesting discussion tonight about Bush’s powers concerning Martial
Law. Apparently some further powers to quell uprisings have been recently granted. I’d say something about absolute power corrupting absolutely, but we already know Bush and his crew have more power than the Energizer Bunny, and are twice as willing to use it.
On the topic of Bush signing stupid laws, next year Daylight

Daily Show and Colbert clips removed from YouTube 2006-10-29 00:57:43 It’s a sad day in comedy on the Internet, as Comedy Central (A Viacom company) has ordered a DMCA takedown of their TV content from the popular video sharing website YouTube
. This will leave dead YouTube links on thousands of blogs, possibly even my own ( I haven’t checked yet), and reduce the value of YouTube considerably. Google may find they spent about a $1Billion too much on YouTube, when they bought it a couple weeks ago for $1.4B.
YouTube is not dead (Only some user’s schticks will be). We’ll just have to look to Lonelygirl15 for political and social commentary instead. Yes I’m kidding about that.
LisaNova is pretty good at satire though.

Belinda is bad because she was disloyal to her boyfriend's Party? 2006-10-28 01:55:00 Warwick [smalldeadanimals.com commenter], and London Fog Lisa came up with some of the most interesting reasons to attack Belinda
Stronach, the victim of Peter MacKay’s outburst in the House last week, where he called her a dog. Apparently, a woman must be loyal to her boyfriend
’s political party. And if she can’t take the “heat” then women should get out of politics, according to them.
I’m not sure why they aren’t telling Peter MacKay that if he can’t take the heat, then he should get out of politics too. Because if you snap and call your ex a “dog” at a business meeting, and then lie about doing it to the people that heard you, it’s pretty obvious you can’t take the “heat” and should go back to knitting.
Here are Warwick’s italicized reasons why Belinda deserves to be called a dog, and my responses:

Women ignored by businessmen - Norm MacDonald is a funny jerk 2006-10-30 02:00:54 Here’s a well written account, by Dave, of what it must be like to do formal business when you’re a woman.
And it looks like Norm MacDonald
is part of the problem. Dave does a good job of demonstrating what it must have been like for Courtney in this video clip, as Norm steals the show, while Conan is interviewing her. Be sure to watch the two last minutes of the clip, where Norm’s jokes about the movie, made my eyes feel like they were going to pop out from laughing too hard.

American democracy: 300,000,000 ruled by 4 people 2006-10-30 14:50:51 Here’s an explanation of the proof behind how the Republicans stole American
elections. What’s interesting to note though, is how close the races were to begin with. I’m not certain of all of the reasons behind that, but I’d guess it has something to do with the possibility the Democrats would be just about as bad in office. The American political system appears to be in need of change.
It’s completely unacceptable for example, that when Hillary Clinton’s first term ends in 2012, that the President’s office will have been held by two “competing” families for at least 24 years. You can’t fool me by saying that a country of over 300,000,000 people
can only find 4 people from 2 wealthy families, to be their political head. There’s something seriously wrong with how democracy
is being practiced, for that kind of coincidence to happen.
That’s the 400kg elephant in American politics. It’s the celebrity problem, and
Road impassable when wet 2006-10-30 21:00:38 I love the road caution signs in Saskatchewan.
The road is to the left of the sign, out of the picture. It’s not where the grass is growing. My favourite though, which I saw on highways when I was a child, was this one featuring an old car going downhill. Now the signs feature a cube van going downhill. Yes, we have hills in Saskatchewan *rolls my eyes*.
I got both of those signs on digital film Saturday, on my way back from Katepwa Beach.
Greek blogger arrested for running a blog aggregator 2006-10-30 23:35:36 Slashdot.org writes about a Greek
blogger who got sued and arrested
, based on what someone else wrote. Blog aggregators reprint the “feed” from other blogs who are members of the list. Blogging Tories, ProgressiveBloggers.ca and the Saskblogs Aggregator are some popular aggregators in Canada. If ever one of their operators were sued or arrested, the blogosphere would take a serious hit. When bloggers are punished, freedom of speech suffers.
